Norton SystemWorks 2003 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (23 September, 2002) list price: $69.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A comprehensive set of utilities, Norton SystemWorks 2003 helps you avoid viruses, keep your PC running smoothly, and fix it when it doesn't. Think of Norton SystemWorks 2003 as a Swiss Army knife: you won't need all of the tools in it every day, but when you do need them you'll be very glad to have them. Norton SystemWorks 2003 comes with Norton AntiVirus 2003, excellent antivirus software which now scans files downloaded through instant messages, as well as from the Web and POP3 e-mail. It also blocks viruses that try to spread through your e-mail, keeps your virus definitions up-to-date, and looks for virus-like behavior. Similarly, many of the tools in Norton Utilities are both easy to use and powerful. It checks the Registry and your hard drive for potential problems you wouldn't otherwise see, and helps you fix them. While some of the older tools have been superseded by options in Windows XP itself, the Speed Disk defragmenter gives you more information and more options than the built-in tools in any version of Windows. The tools in CleanSweep are useful for clearing out clutter on your PC, whether from applications you've downloaded and installed, or for cleaning up after your browser. While there are other ways to do all of that, and the tools in this version have been reorganized rather than updated, you do get a very clear and simple interface to work with rather than having to hunt around. Plus there's a new tool called Connection Keep Alive to stop your dialup connection from disconnecting when you're not actively using it; handy if you leave your PC while a long download is running. This isn't a major upgrade, but if you don't already have a copy of Norton SystemWorks it's a worthwhile investment to make sure you're getting the most out of your PC. --Mary Branscombe, Amazon.co.uk ... McAfee Internet Security 5.0 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (10 September, 2002) list price: $69.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review McAfee Internet Security 5.0 protects your PC against a wide range of viruses and other external threats, such as hacker attempts. McAfee Internet Security 5.0 combines McAfee's VirusScan 7.0 and Firewall 4.0 in one product along with a new interface, allowing you to configure everything from one location. On the virus front, McAfee Internet Security 5.0 operates on many levels. The new Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK) constantly monitors your PC for viruslike activity and integrates well with many e-mail clients. VShield runs constantly in the background, checking files as you open them. Even if you choose to disable VShield, the program still protects Microsoft Office files by scanning them before you open them. It also protects against invisible and malicious e-mail scripts by looking for suspicious behavior such as trying to open, write, or delete files. Any suspect activity is immediately stopped. Of course, any antivirus product is only as good as its ability to stop viruses from infecting your system. Happily, McAfee Internet Security 5.0 has been given a 100% rating by Virus Bulletin, so long as you keep it up-to-date. Like the other products in McAfee's security lineup, McAfee Internet Security 5.0 uses Instant Updater, which constantly checks for product updates and automatically downloads them when you are online. The firewall function in McAfee Internet Security 5.0 controls which of your applications can access the Internet, and stops them from divulging your personal information without your knowledge. It also stops hackers from accessing your PC remotely. The firewall recognizes most common programs and automatically creates rules to allow them to communicate with the Internet. Users can create their own rules, but this can be tricky for the novice as some of the warning dialog boxes tend toward jargon-filled prose. McAfee Internet Security 5.0 works with Windows Internet Connection Sharing, and has also been enhanced for broadband so home networks are fully supported. Also new in this release is an intrusion-detection system that blocks port scanners. Of course, the most important aspect is how well it actually works, and the firewall passes all the usual tests with flying colors. It happily deals with all the usual intrusion techniques, and the auto update feature ensures the product is able to cope with any new threats as they appear. We did have some difficulty getting an e-mail program called Ameol to work with McAfee Internet Security 5.0, but all other programs we tried worked fine. Novice users may struggle to get the most from the firewall in McAfee Internet Security 5.0, but the more experienced will find a powerful firewall and antivirus program that can be used with confidence. --Iain Laskey, Amazon.co.uk ... https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 I also do this on a monthly basis as a security measure for my PC. When testing this product AFTER configuring the firewall for maximum security and ensuring I had no applications using any open ports, McAfee had 3 PORTS that were shown as OPEN when tested by Shields Up!, not as stealthed, not as even closed. According to the Shields Up! website, the firewall at the very least should have notiifed me of open port(s). It didn't. Also, I setup the antirvirus for real-time protection and automatic updating. Yet, whenever I did a weekly virus scan, it found new viruses. These viruses were not discovered AS they were introduced to my system, only after the fact in a routine scan, during which time they could have attached themselves to emails or damaged important files. I have since installed a FREE firewall, now all of my ports are now fully stealthed. Another antivirus program found TWO undiscovered viruses after I uninstalled McAfee. I went to the store and got my money back.

Immediately upon attempting to install this product my computer shut, restarted, then shut down again. My computer repeatedly continued to do so until I paid a skilled tech to come over and attempt to fix the problem. He was able to get my computer operating again but my access to the internet via cable modem timed out after about 8 minutes. The only way to re-access the internet was to completely reboot, but my internet access still continued to time out after 8 minutes. My internet provider believed the problem was not with my internet access, but with my computer. After uninstalling this zone alarm piece of junk and uninstalling my other anti-virus software, the issue was still not resolved. In the end I had to do a complete system restore on my computer.Right now I have, (12 hours and $100+ dollars later), Based on previous reviews and my techs analysis, there was a conflict with Zone Alarm and my already installed anti-virus software that was not resolved by uninstalling Zone Alarm.Apparently "uninstall" doesn't mean "COMPLETELY uninstall" Zone Alarm. This product is worse than any virus I've ever encountered. If you decide to install it after these reviews, then caveat emptor (even if it is free) and heaven help you!
It's really a shame.ZA used to be one of the best firewalls around. ... Read more Asin: B000068U68 |

VirusScan Home Edition 7.0 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (12 September, 2002) list price: $59.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review McAfee VirusScan 7.0 protects your PC against a wide range of viruses, Trojan horses, and other rogue programs. With so many viruses being transmitted by e-mail, you absolutely need an antivirus program to protect your PC and, more importantly, your data. McAfee VirusScan 7.0 installs easily from the CD-ROM and immediately checks your PC for any viruses that may already have infected it. As soon as you connect to the Internet it downloads the latest updates to ensure you are up-to-date with all the newest virus signatures. To enable it to work effectively, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 operates on many levels. The new Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK) constantly monitors your PC for viruslike activity and integrates well with many different e-mail clients. The VShield feature runs constantly in the background, checking files as you open them. Even if you choose to disable VShield, the program still protects Microsoft Office files by checking them before you open them. Another common way hackers infect PCs is by using scripts in e-mails. McAfee VirusScan 7.0 works well here, too, by looking for suspicious behavior in scripts such as those trying to open, write, or delete files. Anything suspect is stopped immediately. For users running Win 98, 98 SE, and Me only there is a Safe & Sound function that makes copies of your documents and keeps them safe in case they get damaged by data corruption or virus activity. Note that this does not work on Windows 2000 and XP. Some of the latest viruses can stop antivirus programs from working properly once they have infected a machine. If you suspect this has occurred, you can boot your PC directly from the McAfee VirusScan 7.0 installation CD-ROM, ensuring a clean environment for it to work in. You can also create a boot floppy to do the same thing. Like the other products in McAfee's security range, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 uses Instant Updater, which constantly checks for product updates and automatically downloads these when you are online. Of course, any antivirus product is only as good as its ability to stop viruses from infecting your system. Happily, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 has been given a 100% rating by Virus Bulletin (although this assumes you do keep your product up-to-date with Instant Updater). McAfee VirusScan 7.0 is a worthy update, and existing users will appreciate the improved security this release offers. --Iain Laskey, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more Features Reviews (101)
