The Sims Livin' Large Expansion Pack Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (30 August, 2000) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Sex and aliens. That's really all that was missing from the amazingoriginal edition of The Sims, and the expansion Livin' Largedelivers these new treats to liven up your beloved Sims existence. New characters (including a gladiator and Xena-like warriors), and, moreimpressively, new decorations are the reasons to buy this game. Thefurnishingsare mostly grouped by theme, with the medieval dungeon option the mostauthoritative of the bunch. (Little Cassandra Goth has been longing toread by torch light all along.) Our personal favorite is the futuristic theme, with an optional, butexpensive,maid/gardener robot to take care of the fabulous modern furnishings. ClearlytheSims team has been doing its research over at Herman Miller, and you'll have abright red, flowing-foam sofa to show for it. But it wouldn't be The Sims if only good taste prevailed. Bring on themai tais with a tiki-heavy islander theme. There's also a startling collectionof carpeting and objects best grouped under the design ideal we call "dementedclown." The attention-getting rarities include: a lame fortune-telling ball (ouradvicemostly centered around hiring a maid), a voodoo doll for hexing roommates, and agenie who delivers as much bad as good (dead plants, anyone?). And, yes, there'sa vibrating bed to give your Sims the spice they've been missing. While the expansion didn't blow us away, it did provide more of the humor andnovelty true Sims die-hards will appreciate. With even more attentiontodetail than the original offering, EA deserves Sims-like applause forthis edition. --Jennifer Buckendorff ... Read more Reviews (250)

Sim Theme Park Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $14.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Building a city is a great and noble endeavor, but sometimes you just want to let loose and have some fun. Electronic Arts lets you turn in your city manager's contract and open up an amusement park in Sim Theme Park. Using all the strategic decision-making skills you learned from the other Sim games, you'll start with a tiny, newly built park with only a few rides, games, and concession stands, and try to turn it into an thriving must-see attraction that people will come from far and wide to visit. Of course, if this is your first simulation game, you'll still do fine--it'll just take you a bit longer to get the hang of it. There's plenty to do: train the staff, take care of prices, maintain trails, and (of course) build new rides. One of the many clever features of Sim Theme Park is the "visitor's perspective" view that allows you to ride the rides and meet the staff as if you were a guest. This can be helpful for getting insight into why people are staying away from the Regurgitator or some other new ride. Better still, you can go online and visit preconstructed theme parks--and a little bit of corporate espionage goes a long way. Once you're feeling secure and a little cocky, post your own parks online and wait for the accolades to start rolling in.--Rob Lightner ... Read more Features Reviews (137)

Roller Coaster Tycoon Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $14.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Want to build an empire without all the usual bloodshed? Try RollerCoaster Tycoon, which puts you in total control of a theme park, managing every detail from ride development to rescuing lost guests. A simulator in the style of SimCity, this game has a simple enough concept: build a park attractive enough to draw in hoards of tourists and then separate them from their hard-earned money. This is accomplished by researching and building rides, along with amenities, gardens and decorations. Once you have your infrastructure, and the staff to maintain it, it's time to sit back and watch the funds roll in...all in hopes of building an even bigger rollercoaster somewhere else! The big draws in a theme park, the coasters are expensive and flashy. They lure in thrill-seeking guests prepared to pay top dollar for a wild ride. RollerCoaster Tycoon even allows you to design the coasters yourself, a finicky but ultimately rewarding operation. Despite a clunky interface and the usual simulator drawbacks--such as long waits while you acquire funds for the next ride--RollerCoaster Tycoon is an utter gem of a game. Its soundtrack, a mix of calliope music and ride machinery, is mixed with the sound of guests squealing with delight and terror as the coasters hurl them around. The sound mix is joyfully evocative, and you can almost smell the cotton candy and the popcorn. Best of all, you can play in this theme park for hours without once losing your children or friends, getting sore feet or experiencing motion sickness. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more Reviews (581)

Roller Coaster Tycoon Expansion Pack:Loopy Landscapes Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (20 September, 2000) list price: $14.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of the few games everreleased that seems to appeal to gamers of every type, and the Loopy Landscapesexpansion pack will appeal to all RCT fans. The only slight letdown isthe lack of new rides. As the name suggests, the main focus of this expansionpack is new terrain and themes. One of the best aspects of Loopy Landscapes is that it lets youpersonalize your park in ways that weren't possible in the original game.Open ahat stall, T-shirt stand, or nearly any other shop and choose a color for eachof your items. It's a hoot to watch a herd of hapless fun-seekers walk throughyour park wearing a rainbow of caps and holding an equally colorful assortmentof balloons. We also had a blast working our way through the new scenariosincluded with the package, which incorporate all the new themes and settings(such as the icy Winter Wonderland and majestic Medieval Castles) and range indifficulty from sedate fun to frenzied puzzle solving. One of best newscenariosgives you an empty park and unlimited funds, but you only have a certainamountof time to attract 2,000 guests, and if the park rating dips below 700 youlosethe game. This effectively turned time and space into the most valuableresources in the game, requiring us to rethink some old strategies. As an additional bonus, the complete content from the first expansion pack,Corkscrew Follies, is included on the CD. Players who already purchasedCorkscrew Follies can send in for a $10 rebate until December 31, 2000,but the process for doing so is persnickety (don't throw your box away).Newcomers to the RCT world should note that a copy of Roller CoasterTycoon is required to play Loopy Landscapes. And RCT junkieswill want to get their hands on all the new goodies Loopy Landscapesoffers as soon as possible. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

First, there's new stuff!!!You can do cool things like make banners, which prevents guests from entering some areas. But the high points are the new, awesome rides, parks, and food stalls.THis comes with cool new rollercoasters to build, tons of new parks, and other stuff. For example, this expansion pack has DOUBLE the amount of parks the first game had.You can experience new, challenging scenarios to beat in new areas and such. Second, there's so much more gameplay! The first game came with endless hours of gameplay, and now...MORE endless hours!Yippie! Now you get to design even more theme parks, with new stuff! You know you want to buy it. Third, the price is incredibly low right now. This is a great bargain, so my reccomendation is to buy it.
Still a favorite game in our house. ... Read more Asin: B00004WHW7 |

SimCity 3000 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Maxis' Sim line of games has sold more than 7 million copies over time. Ten years after releasing the original, they've returned to revamp the one that started it all. SimCity 3000, like its predecessors, can't be won or lost. You create and manage the best virtual city you can, using the colorful but simple interface. At worst you'll run out of money, but by listening to your advisers and patiently zoning, developing, and budgeting, you'll see your turn-of-the-century homes become millennial skyscrapers. You can start with a fictional model, a randomly generated terrain, or a landscape based on a real geographic location. As you balance transit, commercial, and industrial needs (to name a few), place famous landmarks (like the Eiffel Tower), make deals with neighboring cities, and limit pollution, you'll be tempted to lose yourself in the incredibly fine detail. Zooming in shows the population strolling and traffic jamming, and the ambient soundscape completes the immersion. If you feel like you've seen it all, Maxis's Web site offers new maps and buildings as free downloads. Fair warning to prospective tenants: to experience SimCity 3000 in all its uptown splendor, you'll need to take the system requirements seriously. --Jack Gardiner ... Read more Reviews (24)
Now I'm free to say that this is probably one of the best games I've ever played. I'm a SimCity 2000 vet and was eagerly anticipating this one, and it's everything you want it to be. Enhanced features, better details, great interaction, it still has it's humerous edge (if you've played SimCity you know what I mean, it's a funny game), and the great music (honestly, we need a SimCity soundtrack ;), just kidding). Personally I love the enhanced terrain editing tool, the new cheats, building/facility selection, the graphics, the new (and somewhat amusing) characters, and the more up-to-date graphs and charts and advisors that let you know how your city is doing. It is missing some of the things that SimCity 2000 had like disasters (if you liked that stuff, they could be fun) and the arcologies, but they are replaced with a more user friendly interface, interesting scenarios and offers from neighbor cities and businessmen, a very fun gaming atmosphere, and a royal selection of great new features that make this superior to SimCity 2000 in my book, and up there as my personal favorite game.

Creatures Playground Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (04 November, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Enter Creatures Playground and bring to life an entire worldcreated around your very own virtual pet. Total care for this creature is yourresponsibility as you guide it through various adventures. The playground beginsin the Nestery; this is where you choose an egg, hatch it, and then name yourNorn, or new friend. Since the Norn is born with no knowledge of the world, youmust take over parental control and teach it well. Throughout the game, your Norn must be kept well fed, warm, and happy. Food canbe found along your journey, either on the ground or in the trees, or you canprepare it in the kitchen area--even grow it in the garden. Dressing your Nornwill keep him or her nice and warm; clothes should be taken either from justoutside the Nestery or acquired along your journey. As your Norn makes its way through the playground, various tasks must becompleted to enter different stages. Use the candy-floss machine to feed yourNorn, or make jelly or toffee apples. Once your Norn is fed, you can move on tothe action games--take the water hose and shoot down the targets in the piratewater game, enter the caves and dig for hidden treasure, or travel to space andtransport your Norn to the winter playland. Here he or she can ride on achairlift to the top of a hill, choose a run, and then race down while avoidingthe obstacles along the way. There are plenty of different stages, tasks, andsurprises, resulting in an endless number of potential adventures for yourNorn. Players at the younger end of the suggested age range may require parentalassistance to begin with, to help them understand all the ways to play with theNorn. However, the scope for development and the endless game scenarios willkeep most players enthralled. Parental control over the game can be set with theuse of time and sound restrictions, and the game can be personalized withplayers' birthdays. (Ages 5 to 9) --Mandy Wood ... Read more Reviews (5)

Madden NFL 2001 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (23 August, 2000) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Those who claim the only things that are certain are death andtaxes have never heard of the EA Sports Madden football line.Yep, it's that time of the year again, and Madden 2001 is herewith a vengeance. There aren't as many new features in this year's version as there werelast time around, but many things have been tightened up and tweaked. The animation is better, computer opponents are more apt to mix up theirpassing and running plays, and the computer also seems to have a betterawareness of the clock. Madden 2001 requires an obscenely powerful PC to run at fullspeed with all the graphics options cranked to the stops. Our 400 MHzPentium III test machine with a 32 MB GeForce DDR card was producing afootball slide show until we turned some of the effects down (and insome cases off). For those lucky souls with the right hardware, prepareto see playing fields and uniforms that degrade over time, perhaps themost detailed player models ever put in a football game, and evenfootprints on the field. On the audio side, we recommend cranking up theexcellent crowd noises and turning off the idiotic and repetitive play-by-playfrom Madden and Summerall. We were disappointed with the play editor, which looked like it wasported directly from an inferior console version of the game. In fact, the entire interface appeared to be hijacked from a console, as it isn'tPC friendly at all. It's the game that counts, though, and Madden2001--like its predecessors--serves up some of the best footballaction to be had on a PC. New online leagues and other multiplayeroptions added this year sweeten the deal. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

However, before you go off and by this, Madden 2004 is VERY VERY soon, and it looks much better than any of the Madden games, if you're looking for a good controller to get the most out of Madden 2004, I suggest the Gravis Eliminator Aftershock. The only place I've seen it really cheaply, is here at Amazon.com BUT, having said that, if your PC isn't up to speed to play 2004, 2001 one is a good choice game.

Pharaoh Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If building and managing cities is your passion, then Pharaoh is the game for you. It puts you in charge of building the ancient Egyptian civilization, complete with work camps, temples to Bast, and, of course, pyramids. Unlike some games of this type, where you build one city indefinitely and watch the population climb, Pharaoh is divided into missions. Players are given a goal--a desired population, food storage targets, and cultural achievements. Play continues until the target is met, unless the city succumbs to plagues, debt, or outside invaders first. Pharaoh is loads of fun. The mission goals are tough but attainable, and city building for a finite time span will appeal to players who find unending development a bore. The usual juggling of civic needs for water, food, entertainment, and jobs is well balanced. The range of industries, religious practices, and municipal services is engaging, and the graphics are clear enough that it is easy to tell what's going on in the city. The mission-by-mission format allows the game to present a few challenges at a time, providing novelties for new levels of play. Take charge of the Nile Valley and become a legend! --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more Reviews (96)

Hey You, Pikachu! Average Customer Review: Game Cartridge (09 November, 2000) list price: $79.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Video games don't get much cuter than Hey You, Pikachu!, a Pokémon title that allows players to talk to their favoriteelectric mouse--via the Voice Recognition Unit (VRU) that's included--and sharein its day-to-day adventures. While older Pokémon fans might findthe game too childish, the candy-coated goodness that's found here makes itperfect for the kiddies. With the abstract goal of building a friendship with Pikachu, playerscommunicate with it by speaking certain keywords and phrases into the VRU'smicrophone. Although Pikachu's speech is limited to variations on its own name(e.g., "Pika! Pika!"), it expresses itself through thought bubbles and thegame's adorably animated 3-D graphics. Mastering this interaction is key to solving Hey You, Pikachu!'s puzzleelements, which are encapsulated in various squeaky-clean activities in whichyou and Pikachu participate together. While the voice recognition here isn'tperfect by any means, there's plenty of on-screen help and guidance to keepplayers from getting too frustrated. --Joe Hon Pros:

Catz 4 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Haven't all cat owners wished for a more cooperative pet? Now you can adopt a "Catz" and have the affectionate, responsive playmate you've always wanted--living in your computer! This remarkable virtual pet will be your companion for life, with proper care and feeding. There are 10 different breeds to choose from, all with their own personalities. Adopt as many as you like, but if you don't pay attention to one, it might run away! This version of the popular "Petz" series has voice-recognition technology, so you can train your new friend to come when called, sit, fetch, or other goofy tricks (microphone not included). There are outfits for your pet and a variety of "play scenes." Where else can you put sunglasses on kitty and take her treasure hunting in the South Seas? With your own digital camera, you can take pictures and use them as additional play backgrounds. Additional options include breeding your Catz, shopping for Toyz, and creating printable picture books. For those who aren't cat fanciers, look for the Bunnyz hiding in the adoption center--he may be just the pet you were looking for. --Jill Lightner ... Read more Reviews (35)
Bugs, bugs, bugs. This game is full of them. The food dish bounces around and your catz never get a chance to eat.Toys permanently disappear from the playscenes. For example, the cannon ball disappears from the Circus Playscene. The game may crash every so often and you lose everything you did. Where did BUNNIES come from?Hello? This is Catz 4; bunnies aren't cats.It probably wouldn't be so bad if you could breed them, but you can't.Big bummer. As for talking to your catz, I couldn't get them to understand me properly, so I just forgot about it. The game is almost like a bug-filled dull Catz 3.Why bother expanding, then? They are almost the same, except for new clothes that barely even have complete outfits, new scenes that lose their unique toys in a day, and bunnies that can't even breed. The only reason I gave it three stars and not one or two is because it does at least have new features.
