    Editorial Review

The residents of Sunny Valley are getting ready for the Sunny Valley Fair. Some are working on projects to enter, while others are setting up the fairgrounds. Ollo is set to help Rose grow a prize-winning tomato to enter in the fair. Little did they know the tomato would grow to be so big. The tomato grows so big that it breaks from the vine and tumbles away, causing troubles for the residents of Sunny Valley. Help Ollo put Sunny Valley back together and capture the prize-winning tomato so Rose can win the blue ribbon at the fair. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year olds love this game
My 3 yr old daughters love this game and keep asking if there are other Ollo games, and I really hope there will be some new games about Ollo soon.I think that this game is unique in that it develops analytical skills rather than focusing directly on number and letter skills like many other products do.It is also interesting to have one major story for a player to follow through the entire game instead of short vignettes for each skill/game level that are loosely tied together.

Each "chapter" or level of the game is slightly more difficult, but I think most 3-1/2 year olds would be able to enjoy the entire game.I think that it helps if you play with your child the first time through so they can get the basic understanding of the concepts involved and also see how the story ends.I bounced back and forth between my daughters the first time they played the game so that I could help them when they got stuck, but once we finished the game they couldn't wait to try it completely on their own.

We also appreciate that it runs natively on Mac OSX.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely game
A lovely simple, honest and clever game. My daughter was almost 4 when she got it and mastered it in days- and for those days played it for hours at a time!It reminds me of a kids' version of Myst in it's theme of putting many tasks together to create a solution to a problem.

It taught her how to use the mouse, navigate using a mental map, and remember tasks after many screens. An absolutly perfect introduction to basic computer skills in the lovliest way.I will buy many copies for presents. She still plays with it and her sister, 3 1/2 is now starting to play it alone.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Mind-numbing
    The good:
Fantastic design, perfect graphics even on 1600x1200 screen where other kids softwares shows only a small window. This one is full screen and great image quality. Also very good music and voice quality. The game generates surprises when you search for things. The characters ask you for things you need to search to help them. So far so good.

    The bad:
After playing the game (helping my son) for about 2 hours from beginning to end, my mind was numb and I was nervous.

    The suggetion:
Instead of buying computer games for you kids, just go in the garden with them and let them help you water the plants and such things. Works with my kid, gives him exercise too. ... Read more

Clifford The Big Red Dog Thinking Adventures

    Editorial Review

It's Clifford the Big Red Dog's birthday, and Emily Elizabeth has a longlist of tasks to accomplish before she can throw a party for her colossal caninepal. As the original "big dog" wreaks havoc--then comes to the rescue--throughout this program, it's easy to see why the affable Clifford has been ahit with early readers for nearly four decades. Kids strengthen recall,problem-solving, and creativity skills as they travel through town with Emily Elizabethand Clifford, getting ready for the party.

The program begins with the efficient Emily Elizabeth explaining all that needsto be done to prepare for the party: groom Clifford, decorate a birthday cake, pick up a present from the post office, build a birthday-dog collar, and cleanup the backyard. As the duo sets out to accomplish these tasks, guided by yourchild, unplanned events and Clifford-caused accidents throw them off task, giving them additional problems to solve. A knocked-over grocery display casemust be put back together before decorating the birthday cake, the neededpackage isn't at the post office, and the only dog groomer in town refuses toservice the gigantic specimen. This program does a great job of encouraging thenonlinear thinking that's sometimes necessary to get through real life.

There are seven places to visit and explore in town, ranging from the beach tothe home of the crotchety Bleakmans, elderly neighbors with a large swimmingpool (hint, hint). In addition to the overall task of figuring out how to getready for the big bash, there are also eight activities that can be played usingthree difficulty levels. One of the standouts is a game in which Clifford mustdeliver cars safely home after causing a traffic jam; it teaches spatialreasoning and how to follow directions, and there's just something delightfulabout seeing Clifford with a minivan in his mouth. Other activities range frompurely creative (decorating the cake, grooming Clifford) to the game-like(helping Clifford dodge seaweed and refuel by eating fish sticks as he swims outto sea to rescue a doggy pal). The overall concept of the program is strongerthan the individual games--a 6-year-old game whiz may find that Cliffordmoves a bit too slowly. We think disciples of the Big Red Dog will love it, asit features everything from Clifford's helpful heroism to Emily Elizabeth's oddcircular kneecaps. (Ages 4 to 6) --Anne Erickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great over and over
"It is really good" says my almost-7-year-old daughter. She and her twin brother have played this game countless times since we first purchased it over 2 years ago, maybe 3 years. Quite challenging when they were younger and still fun, especially for my daughter. 3 levels of difficulty, quite a few different activities & games, a nice goal at the end (pun intended). Really good for learning basic computer skills as well as logic and problem solving. Once the kids understood how it worked, I never had to help them with it--they could go through the whole game on their own. One of if not the best computer games I've seen for 4-6 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised and very pleased.
This is my very first childs software game. I was quite amazed with it. Our 4 yr had never touched a mouse before, yet she (faked) a cry when she had to stop playing after her first 40 minutes. She needed only occasional help learning the game and of course it's even more fun if your nearby to share her excitment at the many surprises presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great!
Our children, 2, 3 & 4, are just getting to know the computer. We've tried a couple different programs and this is by FAR the best. Our 4 year old is enthralled. He loves it, and I don't mind playing with him. The younger kids play it, but not as independently as the oldest. I think this means its a program we'll be playing a year from now. Can't say that about any of the other programs we have. ... Read more

      Editorial Review

Anyone who enjoyed the hilarity of Pixar's Finding Nemo movie will be tempted to pick up one of the two games that star everyone's favorite clownfish. Both games feature original voice work by the outstanding Nemo cast, including the pitch-perfect Albert Brooks, Willem Dafoe, and Ellen DeGeneres. Each game also has a selection of cut-scenes from the movies, shown when tasks are well done. The difference between the two games is that Nemo's Underwater World of Fun was created (says the box) for children four and over, and is by far the simpler of the two Nemo titles.

In Nemo's Underwater World of Fun, players have six mini-games to choose from, along with a section where kids can make music by clicking on members of the Tank Gang (Bubbles, Jacques, and the rest). In a section that resembles an ocean-bound Frogger, Nemo must swim with the turtles, avoiding obstacles and collecting items. Other activities include a shark-run shell game and a very difficult Pong-like segment called "Feeding Frenzy," where Nemo has to bounce kelp balls off obstacles and walls to reach Bruce's mouth.

Both Nemo games have two big drawbacks. First, computer owners with less than state-of-the-art machines will experience stutter and delay when the movie segments appear (which will disappoint kids, so be sure to check the system requirements carefully). Also, each game only offers about one hour of original gameplay (kids who repeat sections will, obviously, play longer).

Of the two games, Nemo's Underwater World of Fun is the weaker, mainly because it doesn't follow the ups and downs of the plot that made the movie so enjoyable. The age requisite, too, seems arbitrary: neither game teaches any particular educational skills (other than pattern matching and hand-eye coordination). For anyone over five, the other game, called simply Finding Nemo is a better choice. But both are loaded with the movie's charms, including an appearance by our favorite character, the sea turtle named Crush. Does everybody have their exit buddy? Okay, dude, you're ready to play.--Jennifer Buckendorff ... Read more

From island adventures to arcade-style games, there are tons of activities waiting here for the dinosaur fan in your house. The latest version of this long-popular program has much improved graphics and animations. The creatures really do come back to life, and since it covers the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, that includes a lot of creatures!

The guide through the different games is Rolf, a young dino who's the only "cutesy" character in the whole program. To help him find his buddy Pterrance, build a maze with different puzzle pieces--it's a great spatial abilities builder. After that, kids can pick from matching games, platform-style skill games, fossil-assembling puzzles, or just plain exploring.

The 3-D videos are great--exciting and lively without being too scary for the little ones. And with so much information, you'll soon be learning the detailed differences between herbivores and oviraptors just to keep up with your kindergartner! --Jill Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Indeed!!
Dinosaur Adventure 3D is a very interesting piece of software. It's full of activities, games, videos and lots more...

5-0 out of 5 stars Missng some of the old stuff.
I always enjoyed this game. I had the original, (MS-DOS Based Version. It had some great games in it, such as "Save the Dinosaurs!, in which you were given a time limit in which to save 15 Dinosaurs, from 3 different time periods, before a Giant comet hit the earth, making it impossible for dinosaurs ot stay alive. There was also an encyclopedia area, in which you could look up the various dinosaur facts. There was an puzzle where you had to guess which Dino you were looking at. And another one, where you had to work out the answer to the question, "Which reptile is this a part of?", where it showed you a Dinosaur, and some pictures of dinosaur parts. There were many more

A windows 95/98 based version of this game came out, that was exactly the same, exept that it needs Windows, and won't run on MS-DOS. This one that I have now, is more animated than the original, and does not have my favourite puzzles. I preferred the original version, because it gave facts in a more realistic way. Kids aged 4-8 may like the latest version, but the original, though much scarier for that age group, is still the best.

Is there a new game out, that has all the features mentioned above? It doesn't have to be from Knowledge Adventure.

        Other than that, it's cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, educational, probably ok on XP
This game was written for Windows 95 and slighly updated for Windows 98. I installed it under Windows 2000 (recent version of DirectX) with excellent results, so I'd expect it would be fine under XP.

Some of the images are dark and muddy, but overall it's a fun game with some reasonable educational content. We haven't run into any major bugs, and it doesn't demand much in the way of drive space or CPU/video performance.

It appears to be out of "print", in fact I think the entire Knowledge Adventure line is probably in limbo. A real shame, it's hard to find good software like this any more. Not only are there no equivalent "modern" competitors, if they existed they'd be very demanding of machine resources.

I've not tested the Mac version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This game is awesome! It is terrifia even for a 12 year old! I love this game! I love the makers too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Educational, with Lots to Do
This game has many activities that are great for learning letters, phonics, rhyming, and more. It has been one of my son's favorites since he was 2-1/2, and now he's 4 and still loves it. As he gets older and understands more he gets different things out of it, both with regard to education and entertainment. And I like how it works, because you can skip through animations and load times are quick as you move from one activity to another (unlike many other preschool games out there). And you can save games to pick up where you left off.

3-0 out of 5 stars Captures attention
I purchased this software for my 3 year old son. At the time of purchase he was 2 1/2 and I needed some software that would keep his attentionlong enough to learn some basic preschool concepts. Since he was a big fan of Blue's Clues I thought it would be perfect. The program did capture his atttention right from the start. The characters all had their own versions of play and covered seperate concepts. The games were a little to simplified at times and some of them seemed to be to hard for he age of my son. I feel that the program would have been better if skill levels could have been altered for the different age groups of 3-5. Overall the software was definately worth the cost and just as importantly it made learning fun for my child. ... Read more

My nephews really enjoy the fun puzzles and warmth of the characters.I like that it gets them problem solving in creative ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
We ordered Freddi Fish 2, 3, 4, and 5.All are just wonderful! My three year old daughter loves them. They have staying power, meaning they do not get old very quick like a lot of the other children's games. They have excellent learning value.I would highly recommend any and all of them for someone from the 3-5 age group.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps kids entertained
This is a great game for kids.My 4 year old just loves playing it because it's challenging enough to be interesting, but easy enough that it's not frustrating. The object is to build a trap to catch the ghost and for that you need to find 5 things.Finding each piece requires a 2 step process, something my daughter caught on to about halfway through the first time.Although the box says it's different everytime you play it, there are only about 5 variations of the game.Still that offers great variety for the price and by the time my daughter got through them all, it was still a bit challenging to remember the tasks she had to do.I do think an adult should play along the first time to point out the "ghost" is just some bad fish in disguise and make light of some of the scarier characters. But, there are plenty of friendly characters too.I've seen other reviews mentioning the lack of a save feature. It does have one (press the "S" key), but the instructions don't mention it-the website technical support section explains the save feature.Overall a great game that is highly recommended-we'll definitely be getting more Freddi Fish games in the future. ... Putt-Putt and Pep are on their way to the circus, and they're looking forward to three rings of fun. Unfortunately, a hungry goat eats their ticket, so the car and his canine pal must earn their way to a ringside seat. Fortunately, the circus owner has some serious problems, and he enlists Putt-Putt to solve them. The reward--if he succeeds in getting the circus up and running--is a free lifetime ticket to the big top.

Putt-Putt Joins the Circus is a role-playing adventure for children between 3 and 8 years of age. The various circus performers are all refusing to do their shows, and Putt-Putt must change their minds, either by finding a lost item or winning a simple arcade-style challenge. The puzzles and arcade games are easy and straightforward, and users will find extensive animated sequences sprinkled throughout the story. Along the way, they can help out a number of talking vehicles and friendly circus animals. One word of warning: older players may find the animations too lengthy, and the simplicity of the challenges means they will finish the game quickly.

Putt-Putt is an appealing character and he shines in this game, which features large, colorful graphics, great sound, good humor, and a nice mix of storytelling and problem solving. Putt-Putt Joins the Circus also comes with a parent/teacher guide, which suggests methods of reinforcing the lessons of teamwork and kindness that are the game's themes, a nice supplement to the gaming experience. --Alyx Dellamonica ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Putt-Putt is great
I got putt putt with a computer that i had bought as one of the disks included. My son was 2 at the time and loved playing this game with me looking for missing clues and helping to put them together. now at 3 yrs of age he plays all by himself with it and knows exactly where to go each time he starts over.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent software for young game players
If your child has played beginning software like JumpStart and is ready to move on to more advanced gameplay, Humongous Entertainment's Putt-Putt series (and Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam, as well) are an excellent choice. These titles take the cognitive tasks up a notch as children must accumulate specific items, navigate a number of locations, and use their problem-solving skills to help their friends and achieve larger goals. Along the way, kind and gentle Putt-Putt and his dog Pep will meet a number of nice characters, visit a variety of interesting locations and play games as they complete the larger tasks.

In Putt-Putt Joins the Circus, the overarching goal is to earn a ticket to the show by performing a variety of tasks and helping the various acts prepare. You must get a nose for the clown, help the organ arrange her pipes, get a power drink to the strong-van, find a new tent for the fleas, etc. There are quite a few locations and objects, so it would be a good idea for you to help your child for a while.Eventually they will probably want to play on their own.The characters are lovable and there is a lot of humor here.We run it on a Mac and have had no problems at all -- very stable and easy to install.

This is one of the best titles in a great series.

            Editorial Review

The stronger and more interesting of two games based on the movie, the eponymous Finding Nemo lets kids reunite father and son deep off the reef in Australia's waters. The game opens with Nemo and Marlin in their respective environments, the dentist's fish tank and the wild waters of the open sea. The two fish are linked by a small button at the bottom of the screen, and players can toggle between them as they complete various puzzles.

The game features all the original cast members, and in addition to classic lines from the film, they improvise new lines. Dory, voiced byEllen DeGeneres, is hilarious, and smaller characters--like Nemo's friends in the tank--get more time to show players their individual, funny personalities: clicking on each fish kicks off a short conversation. Although there's more watching than doing in the early stages of the games, Nemo fans will be enthralled. Later stages involve memory games, like following patterns while jumping on the backs of jellyfish. All the characters, including sharks and sea turtles, make extended appearances in Finding Nemo.

Like Nemo's Underwater World of Fun, this game has two primary issues: computer owners must pay close attention to system requirements (otherwise, movie scenes in playback stutter significantly) and gameplay itself lasts little more than an hour, if kids ace the tasks. Also, one caveat for education-minded parents: this game is clearly only for fun, not for--pardon the pun--schooling. But kids will need to look beyond the obvious to complete the tasks in this game, and it's the possibility for discovery that makes Finding Nemo well worth exploring.--Jennifer Buckendorff ... I saw the 3 star review and almost didn't purchase it.The negative reviews didn't help. But keep an open mind.My 3 year old grandson loves all the games. He is a little young but is learning as he goes. The film clips add a little extra to break up the games. What can I say, it's like a Pooh or Blues Clues CD., it's games, it keeps the little ones interest, while they are learning.

Join Scooby-Doo and the gang in Egypt as they visit Velma's Egyptologist cousin, Thelma. While visiting the pyramids in Giza, they find Thelma is missing and a mysterious mummy is frightening all the tourists away. It's up to the gang to find Thelma and wrap up the mummy for good. Kids help Scooby-Doo and his friends by telling them what to do and who to talk to. Along the way, they'll encounter ghosts, puzzles, and hair-raising adventure.

Kids must solve more than 10 different puzzles and activities to solve each mystery. The adventure is never the same. The mystery changes each time you play, with new clues and a different villain and outcome. Turn up the gameplay and the challenge with three levels of difficulty: Spooky! for ages 5 and 6; Spookier! for ages 7 and 8; and Spooktacular! for ages 9 and 10. The game builds thinking and problem-solving skills by utilizing research skills, deductive reasoning, and logical analysis. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but won't keep attention for long
You get what you pay for....my kids enjoyed this and played it constantly for 2 weeks. Then they went back to Reader Rabbit which they have enjoyed for months.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness it was a gift!
I wouldn't buy this for my kids. Thankfully it was a gift for my 8-year old daughter. She tried to play it on her own at first and couldn't really figure out what to do, I guess she didn't read or listen to the instructions. The instruction file was enormous and complicated to follow for the specified age group. I played it on my own later to see what in fact this was all about. I solved the mystery and actually enjoyed myself, then my daughters(4&8) played it and the mystery was exactly the same for the next 3 times they used it. Maybe I haven't found how to change the level of difficulty, but I felt that everything was too obvious and not really a "mystery". I felt the kids were being humored and this game was really dumbed down. We haven't picked it up again since then, it has been a couple of weeks now. They'd much rather stick to "Clue Finders" and other such programs or the written word than play this game. They may give it another shot soon. Bottom line, this game just doesn't suit our tastes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I suspected.
This game is rather easy an does not contain many challenges for my 4-year old.The game was very easy to complete. The game becomes boring rather quickly at times because you had to keep going back and forth from place to place to solve the game.Sometimes you get stuck and am not sure where to go next until you explore some of the places again because the scenes change as the game progresses. The game has excellent graphics and sound but a mediocre story. The game needed more action. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and challenging.
My 4year old loved this game right away and so far she has only completed level one.(kept her interested for hours)Lots of variety.Style of the game is similar to "Freddi Fish and the stollen conch shell."

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid education and fun but lacking Pizazz
My four-year-old daughter likes this program but it is not one of her favorites.I'm at a loss as to how I should criticize it because it seems to be missing a polished edge quality that is hard to explain. It's as if it is trying to be cool but... The activities are educational, the graphics are captivating, and usually "space" is an exciting backdrop for an adventure.I think, however, that it's missing some punch which would allow me to give it five stars. It is certainly worth playing if your child needs many choices of computer games like my girl does.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat
The back story is always grounded in a real disastrous event in Katherine Diane Cadell's life. Quicker than you can say, "Oh, no!" her imagination creates a related adventure with the Star Flyers and her as Katie Cadet - leader of the pack. And the pack includes AJwho has special powers for each mission, Io, a fire breathing dog and Klanker, a very strong robot.
The actions are basically arcade style - but a very clever and imaginative arcade. The settings are sure to please children - Planet Chocolopagus where you herd marshmallows through chocolate tunnels; Planet Bowlarama where besides jumping and climbing , the player has to make use of the different powers of the team to get past hazards and Planet Ice Cube where planning and mapping skills are needed to navigate mazes. Activities are varied so the pace of the game keeps the interest high without it being tiring.

Getting from one planet to another requires navigating the spaceship through the Popcorn Galaxyavoiding space food junk and finding caramel power ups. The levels are Tough, Tougher and Toughest, and is just another example of the care and sensitivity that the designers used in putting together this game. As in all of The Learning Company's games there is self leveling and it is set to on but can be turned off. Self leveling keeps track of the players progress and adjusts it according to the performance, so that if you ace a game, the next one will be tougher.

The current format in games now-a-days is to put the manual on the disk. Do yourself or you kids a favor andread it. The how's and why's and what is good stuff and what is stuff to be avoided and what is to point of it all - is not always obvious - so read the manual. The upper age range for this game is eight, but it is unusual and clever enough to please older kids besides being delicious. ... Read more
