Worthless for complicated tax forms
TaxCut did not warn me that I needed to fill out additional forms required for taking the exemption for a qualified child, nor did it lead me through the Schedule C like TurboTax does. TurboTax may be more expensive, but it's well worth it to save the headaches that this program caused. If you have complicated tax forms or unusual tax situations (or prefer an intuitive program, rather than something that makes you say "What am I supposed to do next???") stick with TurboTax.

If TaxCut Installation stalls at 21% installed
TaxCut's website (their telephone customer service was non-existent on this date - hung-up on me twice without every getting a person)is not helpful with this problem. While telephone customer service might be expected to be inundated with calls on the last day for filing - you'd think installation problems would be thorougly documented by the end of tax season for PC's running Windows XP.NOT the case.And if you're encountering this on the last day, try rebooting your Windows XP system, pressing F8 while it's booting to restart in Safe Mode with Networking Option and then proceed with the install.I found this tip on another site and it worked for me.The font and Flash upgrades mentioned with this problem in other threads hear on Amazon - didn't help me.
Taxcut bug
This program has a bug in processing 1099-R data that makes the whole software package useless to me.After filling in the data from my 2005 1099-R form, the program informed me that these monies were taxable in 2003 not 2005, and that these data would not be included in my 2005 return.I could not find a way overide this problem. Also, there was no apparent way to directly contact H&R Block to find out how to fix it.After wasting a couple of hours I now have to trash the taxcut software and spend more money to purchase turbo-tax, which from prior years experience is relatively bug free. ... Petrified of taxes--TurboTax helped me through
This last year was my first year of filing taxes for a rental, a sole-proprietorship, and the various small jobs I'd held, plus my husband's new job.It was a potential nightmare and I spent several restless nights thinking about it.Under recommendations from a bookkeeper friend, I bought TurboTax.It was great and I was able to get a significant return, which made the time it took to work through the sessions more than worth it.I finished my taxes in about four days, and for anyone with several PT jobs or potential complications, I'd recommend setting aside a couple hours a day--TT allows you to stop any session at any point and save the data, which lets you go back and proofread or reenter data as you wish.I could have finished my taxes without TT, but I highly doubt I would have saved much.TT's deduction questionaires.I can't compare it to earlier versions, since this is my first year using it, but I was very pleased and I think that if you have several different sources of income, TT really helps you organize.In terms of user-friendliness, I think it was fairly straightforward.I used the Help menu a lot and was able to turn on and off the questionaire when I wanted to.If you are new to taxes or TT, then I'd recommend working through it over a period of a week or so, just to verify all your information and think about possible deductions that you might be missing.Because of TT, I am now organizing all my receipts for my businesses in the categories that it suggested for deductions and feel fairly confident about next year's tax season.

Intuit Customer Support Lacking
Received TurboTax Premier disc from Amazon.During installation, kept getting different installation errors.Intuit website posted SEVERAL options as work-arounds.Spent too much time trying to fix what ended up being a defective disc.On-line chat w/ Intuit rep was frustrating, at best.Intuit would not ship replacment disc direct since Amazon is not an "authorized" seller.Amazon shipped replacement disc (took too many days, Amazon).
turbo tax premier 2004
Bummed I couldn't find the home and business (guess their not making it anymore) This program wouldn't allow me to import information from previous years. I've always been able to transfer from last years Turbo tax home and business forms. I had to re-type everything manually. No prompt to do it and when I went to the pull down menu I couldn't prompt it to import data. Not user friendly, it used to be better. ... Read more

TurboTax Impossible to Download!
TurboTax may or may not be a good product; I was never able to successfully download it!
Updates a pain, but TurboTax did its job
I didn't have a problem using TurboTax last year (even with the software activation) so I used it again this year.The software with its interview format worked for me, was able to save my return as pdf and e-file without a hassle.The only real pain was getting the updates.I had to go to Intuit's website to look for info and play around with my broadband connection to get the updates to download. Worth it if you're going to itemize...otherwise forget it
Okay, the download process was a nightmare as described by my earlier review.However, three hours later I have a very comprehensive itemized return, which would have been way too complex to do on my own without the guidance of the filing questions.The good news is that I had done my taxes by hand last night and came up with a large amount owed, and after using the deductions calculator in TurboTax ended up with a refund instead.So it more than paid for itself.Read more

Do not E- this one
When using Turbotax to prepare my taxes this year, the prep software advertised this program. I thought it might be a good idea to simply e-file my estimated taxes also. However, this software is not simple to use. It isn't inutiative at all (no pun intended).The version I used is through inituit's website via an account, not a program I install on my computer. Sometimes the website is busy, so the program is temporarly out of service. I had thought I'd set up my account to automatically schedule a reminder and pay from my checkbook. However, today when I checked (it's time for the 2nd quarterly payment), I didn't get a reminder.When I tried to manually efile, I instead had to manually print out the estimated form and send the payment in the old fashioned way because efiling requires an earlier stamp than a postmark. Before getting this service, it's time to ask..."Do you really wish to make a simple process more complicated?" I wish I had said no.

Beyond Disgusted
I'm a freelance designer for the first time and thought that this would be a great tool for estimating my taxes each quarter.How wrong I was!

I hate Turbo Tax
I have used this product for several years and each year I get more and more disgusted.The problems are many. Yet another bad review with some history
I started using TT in 1998 by using a friend's disk (stole it).It worked great.Turbo Tax didn't cost too much so starting in 1999 I started buying it. They got me as a customer because they had a good product at a good price and because I was able to try it once free before I bought it.Nothing I hate worse than buying something you can't return only to find out it is junk.The 2002 printer thing made me sware to never use TT again.Thing is they fixed it for 2003 so should we reward their fix this year or punish them for what they did last year?

2003 - No Better than 2002!
Turbo Tax was good last year.But now I have CG (capital gains) and find TurboTax Deluxe doesn't even collect the information.I got so angry so started clicking all over the map and got some message that if I had bought a different version of TurboTax, it would have collected CG information.Read more

pathetic tech support
Like G. Lynde, the author of a previous review, I was a long-term user of Intuit's It's Deductible program, but was growing increasingly tired of Intuit's arrogance towards its customers.Their discontinuation of the desktop version and forcing of customers to use the on-line version caused me to switch to H&R Block's DeductionPro.However, I am having serious doubts about the wisdom of that move.

Stunning drop in quality
There are serious problems with EasyStep, the way TurboTax takes you through filling in the information for the return.It is only because I'm knowledgeable about taxes and a software developer that i managed to get my return correct.And deviation from simply stepping through, one item after another, leads to trouble.Simply going back, using to back button, to change something can cause important screens to be skipped.
Computes Passive Loss Limitations incorrectly
In computing the passive loss accumulation for rental property, it adds in all other passive losses, not just those in the same category.

Surprised at all the negative reviews
I am so surprised to see all the negative reviews.My turbotax worked fine.I usually do my taxes by hand, but I have used turbotax in the past.I did download any updates that became available.I also got the state version and e-filed for both.All of it went incredibly smoothly.If you just have to fill out 1040EZ it isn't worthwhile, but the auto fill in is a big time saver for 1040 filers, especially if you have to do the capital gains calculations. ... No more Fidelity import? what the @#$%@!
I cannot believe that Taxcut can no longer import capital gains info from Fidelity, which is has been able to do for several years.I was a happy customer, now I'm a MAD customer.

Good Product, doesn't beat TurboTax, though
It's the first time I used TaxCut after years of TurboTax. Didn't have any installation problems and even the data import from last year went fine. It's basically the same thing as TurboTax, but not as slick. I guess less computer-savvy users should go with TurboTax, because navigation and entries that are off the interview path are quite tough to figure out. Despite my overall preference for Intuit's product, how can you resist the difference in price including the e-file rebate and now the $10 special rebate for TaxCut?!

Would give it 0 stars if possible
After spending over an hour waiting on their help line and trying all of their non-functioning suggestions, I was still unable to install this on either of my PCs. They don't want to admit it, but their ad for Deduction Pro kills the software install at 21% (or 26% for the standard version). And no, their "font patch", killing all startup services, upgrading the Flash Player, nor starting in Safe Mode did not resolve the problem. I'm out the money on this and am switching to TurboTax. H&R Block has lost this customer.

I'm afraid I will have to put TaxCut down
I am afraid that this will be the last year I will use TaxCut after using it for at least the past six years.The program added over $6000 of extra 1099-misc income into my return.It was just there out of the blue. No entry, no name from whom it came from just an extra $6,000 of income out of thin air.Not a good thing.Luckily, I caught it.

Better than TurboTax
We used TurboTax for a couple of years then switched to TaxCut on the advice of friends. It saved us a lot more money! It is more knowledgeable at making the most of one's deductions than TurboTax. We are sorry we didn't switch last year when we first thought of it.

Can't file even a printed 2004 return
Last year we were able to file a printed return using this software. This year not only could we not down load the mandatory update because there were no instructions that worked, but the software would not let us print a filable return only one with "draft do not file" written all over it. We went to Smart Tax, one of several on line providers listed on the IRS site, and used this to prepare and file our 1040 for free, and our state for a small fee this afternoon!I'll admit that having done the draft with Tax Cut helped.I'm not counting on Tax Cut to get this fixed by next year. ... Itsdeductible 2004, 2005
I used Itsdeductible 2004 and 2005 to track my charity donations through out both years.I bought 2003 at tax time and found it was a waste if not used to track during the year.I used TurboTax Deluxe for both tax years.It was very easy to import data from Itsdeductible to TurboTax.Down side was not all items donated are in the Itsdeductible data base and need to be done manual. This product is most helpful for noncash donations that require detail information to deduct more than $500.I wasunder estimating the value of donations prior to using this product.

Great hype then fizzles out
I used the 2005 version all year and was thrilled at how easy it was and the huge tax savings (since I take many bags of donations throughout the year).It was quite a let down to discover at tax filing time that it did NOT transfer to Turbo Tax as indicated.Intuit also has absolutely the worst customer service (oxymoron) imaginable.They only send canned responses and never actually address your concerns.
Easiest Way to Track and Estimate Donations
I have been using Turbo Tax software for a few years. This year I was able to purchase TurboTax 2005 Federal+ State+ ItsDeductible for $40! What a steal! I guess December is the month to buy.

TaxCut not friendly
Two distinct problems (seems each year it gets harder to use, and less friendly).
This item is for last year's taxes only!!!
Every year they put out a new version of the program updated for the current tax year. This TaxCut 2003 will not be useable for 2004 tax returns. Also, for those people who think that by buying their own tax program will save them a bundle of money, they are truly foolish. I do taxes for a living, not only at home, but for a tax professional office and these programs are not meant for people who don't know the tax laws and what forms they need to file. If they do their taxes wrong, the money they saved will go right to the IRS and state in penalties and interest. These programs will not protect you against that. Let electricians do electrical work, plumbers do plumbing work, and, for crying out loud - let tax professionals do tax work. These programs are not supposed to be easy, they are not for the average person to use. ... Read more

Came out same as tax accountant last 2 years
I have had trouble trusting the program entirely with tax preperation, so I did this comparison.First, I figured up my taxes for my personal/sole proprieter cabinetry business taxes on TurboTax and then went to my regular tax accountant who used to be an IRS auditor, and he is very thorough.Both times my taxes came out almost exactly the same.I'm impressed, and intend to do all my own taxes this year.

complicated returns? this is your best choice
PC version on Win XP. I only used for my personal return and this is my 3rd year with turbotax product. It is the only one that has any chance of handling more complicated returns with business income- none of the others even listed the forms I need. This year there was a glitch with form 6252- it imported data from last year but did not prompt me in the interview. I called support on tax day and had a live person within a few minutes. Later I used the chat for a follow up question. opaque and useless
If you need to file a schedule C, or live in New York State, I would suggest spending your money on the services of a tax professional rather than this cripplingly flawed piece of software. (Based on my past years' experiences and several comparative reviews I've seen of the 2003 software packages, TaxCut is even worse!)The interview questions are confusingly worded for Federal, but are completely opaque for State, as if the questions were pulled directly off the state IT-201 form.I thought these programs were supposed to explain things.The help links skip definitions of many key terms, and are almost wholly absent from the State questionnaire, where examples and explanations are most needed, especially when tax is computed differently from the federal rates.What's worse, the State program asks for data that was already entered in the Federal questionnaire without even giving a worksheet or line number to refer to!If you go back to Federal and look it up, watch out: you'll have to answer every State question again to get back to the screen you had reached.There is absolutely no point to using this program.Go see an accountant -- you will thank yourself. ... Less evolved than the Federal edition, but gets job done if...
As with all software, the user interface and its workflow has its quirks. Some of it you may find counter-intuitive and not very helpful.
It STINKS
The problems with this program as well as all the others by H&R Block are too numerous to mention here, but take it from someone who learned the hard way, don't waste your money on this product.
TaxCut 2004 State is terrible!
I've been using TaxCut Deluxe and TaxCut State since the 2002 tax year but 2004 will be my last TaxCut year. Next year, I'm switching back to TurboTax.

Fed Ok, States Not
The Federal program worked ok for me, though the interface is a bit clunky.However, the MD state program has some minor glitches, and the WV state program doesn't handle part-year residents, which of course I didn't know until I fired it up at the last minute...

cut out this software -- find something else!
I wrote a nice long review but as it happens my computer shut down before the review was submitted. However, I'm going to do it again here because I don't want you to waste your time like I wasted mine on this software this year, my first year doing my own taxes.

Terrible software and even worse support
TurboTax is buggy and the support is terrible!You cannot update your state information after the initial review without manually editing the tax forms.If the field involves computations, you must do these manually after changing it.If you try to re-run the interview, it just brings you to the "finish" screen.I talked to four different people from TurboTax support about this.They say it's a known bug and they have no plans to fix it.If I wanted to manually edit to forms, I wouldn't have purchased this software!If you make changes to the federal, TurboTax state isn't necessarily updated.I received the following ridiculous suggestions from support:clear your cookies (I'm not using the web version); delete this file, but make sure you empty the recycling bin (what??); go to forms and click delete form (there is no delete option).I don't know where they get these ideas, but support isn't helpful when you know more than they do!

Turbotax Failed
Don't believe the rating of one.A minus 5 would have been more appropriate. After six years of being a faithful Turbotax user, the changes they have made in 2004 are convincing me never to use their product again - even if I could.After purchasing the downloadable version it failed to unzip. Three hours on the phone with representatives in India did not solve the problem. Finally I got them to send me a CD, which seemed to install but hung up on the question "Select a tax return type" that offered zero choices and no pull-down.I can't believe they would release a product that seems designed to frustrate their customers!!!

Worked As Advertised For Me
I have used TurboTax products since 1995, with the exception of trying TaxCut last year, which was a disaster. The TurboTax State product had no difficulty quickly and accurately completing tax returns for my state (Minnesota) after finishing my federal return.
