What you buy by the Suite, you can only upgrade by the Suite.
Heads up, if you bought Adobe Creative Suite 1 Package and then buy an upgrade like this one planning to upgrade just part of it, you're in for a rude awakening.
Worthy, just suprisingly slow
Overall, this is another solid Adobe update that's worth the expense. This is an improved version of what I think is the best professional layout app. However it's not perfect. I have been suprised with how slow certain things are, even launching. And dissapointed that you cannot save back to even CS1. I have gotten inconsistent results with saving it back through their InDesgin exchange format. It hasn't always worked. Also wish my custom PDF and Workspace settings could be carried over in the upgrade. I had to manually resave them on the fly - and it always seems to come at the I'm already late-for-a-deadline times. Overall, solid stuff from a company that I've come to expect a lot from. Hopefully we won't have to wait for CS3 and Intel Mac compatability for another 12 months like they are predicting...

THE industry standard

Well worth the expense!!!
I just bought today the 12th version of this product and it is great. I finished updating my resume and creating a totally new cover letter within a 30-minute time frame. It is easy to use and very informative. Great buy!!! The only flaw is that when exporting to Word you will have to realign the contents as it does not export exactly as you worked it on the software.

Quark is good
Quark 6.0 is easy to use software. The only downside is that you cannot make documents bigger than 48". But the software is worth it and it is more user friendly than Indesign.

Garbage
Let me just start by saying Quark is absolute garbage. I come from adobe and corel, and quark is by far the most obtuse, clunky, buggy, bloated, backwards piece of software I've ever used. Little things like creating bullet points and changing font sizes on the fly take you 3 clicks through aggrivating menus, wherein corel it takes one click on your toolbar. As for it being the "print" standard, I use .tiff and .pdf for all my printing, and granted I havent done a huge amount of print work, but the work I do comes out fine and prints flawlessly from a corel PDF or Photoshop. I find most functions in quark are in corel, like creating masterpages and wrap around for text, that are MUCH more intuative in corel than in quark. I guess for magazines or books would be the only real reason to have this software, as flyers, brochures, and most other text layout graphics can easily be created in photoshop. I find myself searching through the help menu to find how to do simple things, like changing fonts on the fly, etc. Even using Indesign for my page layout is breathlessly EASY. I can change fonts on the fly, create lists easily, styles work how you'd think, and so on. Evenw ith quark 7 coming, i think it's too late for them to turn around. Indesign has taken over and so has corel. Say goodbye to this POS.
Quark is obsolete software with bad workflow
At my work we layout books, ads, brochures, etc. and WERE using Quark for everything.For years Quark had a lock on the industry.It was, and is, a stable platform for printing.As late as a few years ago all our printers and service bureaus demanded Quark.They all had custom setups that worked very well with Quark.TODAY, that is no longer true.ALL of the printers we work with now PREFER Adobe Acrobat.Since Quark has always been a royal piece of trash with regard to its usability (bad user interface, clunky operations, and features that are designed like we are still in the early 1990's), the good news is there is no longer a reason to keep it.We now use a variety of software packages to produce our printed products and just convert them all to Adobe PDF.Quark is astonishingly bad with regard to the workflow conveniences people expect in modern high-end software packages.Our productivity in the design of print products has vastly improved by dropping Quark.Unless Quark RADICALLY improves its product, there is little need to use it professionally today. ... Disappointment
I am so disappointed with this software.It crashes and seems to be extremely sluggish.I expected much better from a product that costs so much.I need to be able to create scripts for my clients, so I don't know what I'm going to do.But I may have no choice at some point to buy something else.I've got to get my work done and not have to constantly be frustrated with the way the software stumbles along.

excellent alternative to Microsoft Office!
Wow, this is simply amazing program that works just like Microsoft Office at less than a 1/10 of the price.In the writer's group I run on MSN, I often run into a new writers needing the basic tools to get started.When they see Office's price they scream they cannot afford the cost.They need a Word Process program like WORD - face it they need WORD!!So many steps in publishing need documents in WORD format, you need others to be able to open and read your documents.Only some people just don't have that price for Office in their budget.I had been recommending to these budding writers buy WORKS.It has the full version of WORD, but lacks Powerpoint and Excel.
