4-0 out of 5 stars Stellar for Speaking, Listening; Poorly Adapted to Chinese for Writing and Reading
Before I review the excellent Rosetta Stone software, I should make a general disclaimer about the Chinese Language: it is not a language you should try to learn independent from a class. The pronunciation and writing system are such that you are likely to fossilize a lot of errors at the very beginning if you do not have real instruction to help you along. Furthermore, the writing system is best learned in a class. So, this program is best used in conjunction with a class or after already having taken some. Otherwise you are likely to be quickly overloaded & lost by this program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for speaking -- not so good for reading and writing
Relative to many of the other languages offered through Rosetta Stone, the Mandarin package is very good. Rosetta presents all material using the continuous tense (e.g., "The boy is running;" "The girl is laughing.") -- this is not conducive to learning how to conjugate verbs, which, in my mind, would make learning how to effectively use a lanuage very difficult. But in Mandarin, there is no conjugation of verbs, which makes learning through the continuous tense just fine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Immersion Program
The idea behind this is to help you learn a new language the way you learned your first one: Repetition. There is NO English. This is not like classroom learning with vocab. memorization and grammar charts. You just jump in and do the lessons over and over until you finally 'get it.' It's a lot like being a baby, but that's how you learned English- right?

1-0 out of 5 stars Learning Japanese is hard and Rosette Stone make it harder.
This softeware is full of crap.Excuse my language but It doesn't work.I would have given no star if I could...I heard about it on tv. Then I went online to do more research and it said one of the company I work for use it.I figure it a big corporation like mine using it then it worth a try.I went to the mall on day and saw it in a kisok and then purchase the two hundred dollar software.Well anyway after I tried it for 5 mins I hated it.I got luck because they do give 6 month refund period. Also got luck because I check my credit card and was not charged for the item yet it been two months.Hopefully that new cashier really did it wrong unless they are going to charge me on the 6th month.Anyway save me time from having to return it.Basically why It sucks is because it teach you like your mother or father would teach you from birth. It shows you picture and then says the words. The only thing is the words you learn are worthless. Like horse, pig, airplane. There no translations you basically have to look at the picture and figure out what they trying to tell you. I got frustrated very quickly and you can choose between romanji, kanji, katana but if you don't know what they are saying you get lost. They do teach you character reading. They teach you words only no solid phrase.I don't know learn how to saying a boy is sit on the table or a boy in an airplane does me any good. For your sake save your money. What I found out is that [...]is very good so If you trying to learn japanese go there it worth a try.If you don't want to continue membership they make it easy for you to cancel on the website. You don't have to hunt it down. Also What I like is if you don't want to do a monthly membership you can do a trial period and then print the material or try to save then on the a pdf file.Only part about that is you can listen to the words or phrase but what the heck give that a try it only 10 bucks and not two hundred bucks.Try that better. It a better step by step approach. Not picture and guess.I am in no way connect to [...]. I just search and found this website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pictures don't always speak words...
I just tried doing the demo and thought it was absurd. What's the point of learning words and the pronunciation if you have no idea what the words mean. It's not good enough to think you know what they're saying.I looked at the 4 pictures and thought of numerous interpretations.Does the software that you get actually tell you?Is the demo picture "the man running", "a boy and girl walking"???It doesn't make any sense to learn just words and not the vocabulary the same way you learned your own language as a child. Especially for a language like Japanese where it's Very important to use the right sentance structure and putting the right empahasis on vowels and constantants in the right place. Just like English two words spelled the same can have totally different meanings if the vowel is dragged out.How can you possibly learn the language if you don't know in advance that I is pronounded e and U pronouned oo. I just don't understand how this method of teacing can help someone to Learn the language. This is no different that a tape that asks you to listen and repeat words.Pictures are fine but a written workbook works just as well.I don't need to see a picture of an apple to relate it to what's being spoken.Four pictures with a girl and boy walking, a black man running, a white woman running and kids walking doesn't make the translation easier than "reading" what the translation is.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good supplemental program
Personally, I feel this program would be great for students already in a Japanese class. It has greatly improved my abilities to listen and pronounce Japanese, and has also given me reading and writing practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than most, but not nearly what it could be
Depending on your learning style, this might be the best non-classroom language learning method out there. This software you two advantages over learning from a book/cassette that make it easily worth the cost.First, you get to hear the words as they are introduced, and see a picture of what they describe. This engages both auditory and kinesthetic learning processes.Second, the extensive practice options essentially set your learning methodology for you (no need to make your own flashcards, etc), which makes this a fairly stress-free, almost passive process.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
Purchased this after having experienced their Spanish course. It is a great software to have.It builds up slowly and is very easy to follow.I, especially, enjoy the companion book.It is entirely in Hindi.I take it with me a lot and read a chapter or two a day.I really wish they would add levels to this course like they do with the European language courses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I can't believe I'm understanding Hindi sentences!I am amazed everyday when I look at the length of these sentences and know that I understand it.And I'm only on Unit 1, lesson 10 I really hope they come out with a level two. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best self-study tool for beginners
I began studying Japanese on my own in 1997. I found that around 90% of the self-study aids were entirely useless. But Power Japanese is markedly different, and it still stands out as the absolute best tool for self-taught Japanese that I have ever found. I still personally recommend it for anyone starting out in the language, or even those who have already taken a beginners' class. Though I used an older version in 1998, this particular one is upgraded mostly to work better on current machines.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to learn Kana/Hiragana
I don't have this version of the software, but the previous version can really teach you to read and write kana.I have tried a lot of language software and books that did not work for me.If you follow this program, you will be able to read and write the Japanese phonetic language. It won't give you a lot of vocabulary, but you will be able to sound out Katakana and Hirgana. You also won't be able to actually read Japanese since many chinese characters (Kanji)are also used in written Japanese, but it is agreat start. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best ever!
I'm 11 years old and find the Rosetta Stone Chinese simply the best language learning method program out there. I have been using it for a while now and my Chinese teacher (Who is Chinese) Says I speak Chinese like a native, without an Australian accent! I find it fun and simple to use but very effective. It makes you associate the words with pictures that stay in your mind so you don't fall in the habit of translating everything.
2-0 out of 5 stars Learn Chinese, then practice with this program
Had I known then what I know now, I would have never bought this, at least not now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful - I love it
I was originally using Rosetta Stone's Chinese program through online subscription.I went several times through the entire program before I decided that monthly subscription was getting expensive and since I enjoyed going over this program very much I finally decided to purchase it.

If your serious about learning Chinese, I would say this is a waste of money and time... Really, It just sucks. Your better of with the pimsleur method, I costs a lot but its worth it. I don't know why these people give this program 5 stars, you either don't know what your talking about, or they paid you... No bad feelings...

5-0 out of 5 stars It is great!
This software works great for me. I am very lazy, and this program is the only way I can force myself to study. I have already passed Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 4 and this year I will take Level 3. I have never taken any Japanese class, all my achievements are thanks to this software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Imersion...
Through my personal experience this was the perfect program for myself learning the japanese language in a recreational manner.I was not a student learning for credit, but in fact a person with numerous Japanese friends who was planning on moving to Japan soon with some of them.I was not that interested in reading and writing said language, but more in fact interested in better comunications with my friends and the new people I would meet while living in Japan. For this reason this software was perfect. It teaches through a completely visual level.I completely understand why some of the other reviews have critism. This is not a program I believe that is very efficent in conjunction with a collegiate course, but more for the beginings of basic everyday communication in this language. It has also helped tremendously to have a slew of Japanese friends to help me along the way, but with this software I have moved leaps and bounds in my understanding of this language.I have always been notoriously horrible at college language courses, and was quite intimidated at the thought of learning a new language. However, with the help of my friends and this program I have now become quite a casual speaker of the language, and I recomend it to anyone who wishes to accomplish the same goals as I did.Once again I must state though...THIS IS NOT A GOOD PROGRAM FOR COLLEGATE STUDY OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE, BUT AMAZING FOR THE BASIC AUDITORY COMPREHENSION OF THE LANGUAGE.I hope my take on this software has helped in some way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but use other references too!
I have to say that I agree with pretty much all of the reviews of this product on amazon.com (4 at the time I'm writing this). These reviews have ranged from 1 star to 5 stars and I believe that this simply reflects differential weighting of different elements by different reviewers with different needs/expectations.For me, here are the points I think are the most salient for discussion:

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY--I say VERY--basic
From the descriptions of the programmes on the box, I thought that this could be helpful--at least, that "Human Japanese" would. This is NOT the "quickest way to learn a language"; if it's quick, it's only because it teaches you very little.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible! Don't waste your money or your time.

If you're looking to learn just the basics, this is a fun way to go.It's clever and cute and has great visuals and sound. However, it probably works best if you also have a Vietnamese friend to help guide you. Also, be aware that the Vietnamese that is being taught is northern Vietnamese and not southern Vietnamese. Also, there were a few vocabulary words used which are very formal and aren't normally used by northerners or southerners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate the dialect difference between the north and south!
As a previous reviewer pointed out, there is a dialect issue here that can be very problematic since the lessons are taught with the northern dialect and most of the Vietnamese people in the US are from the southern part of that country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone is the BEST!
I tried other language software, tried to save a few bucks. It was not worth it. Rosetta stone works, it is sort of fun and before you know it you are learning the language in a way that stays with you.

My disclaimer: This is not a review of the software's useability.I am extremely satisfied with the software's ability to teach me the content as intended by the publisher.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
Well, I have been learning Mandarin for sometimes, and recently I saw a friend of mine bought this item.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pound-for-pound Best Value
The picture on the front of the package says that it is 1) the quickest way to learn and 2) the most widely used method in the world. Now, it does't say that it's the BEST, and Rosetta's method or Pilfur's would be a better place to go if you have tons of cash to throw away on lessons you probably won't follow religiously. For a set under $10, however, sorry folks, but the other reviewers who nay-say obviously didn't even try it. I still have not exhausted this CD-rom set. The pronounciation, though not always crystal clear in both make and female voices, is more than adequate if you have pronouciation down already. If you don't, then make that a co-priority, along with decent grammar text for your appropriate level. That's really all you need to make this work and keep your Mandarin on the right path on the cheap.

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay for speech, but doesn't help with Chinese characters
This software is okay for learning to say a few basic words and phrases. The variety of activities makes it more interesting than a phrasebook. But it won't help you if you want to learn Chinese characters, which are the more interesting and important part of the language. If you want to learn to read Chinese, you'll need a good textbook and maybe a Chinese reading & dictionary software product like Clavis Sinica. ... I have lived in Thailand for a year and a half now (Peace Corps) and speak a decent level of Thai.I seem to be understood fairly well in Central Thailand but I have difficulties in my assigned region in Isaan (mostly because they make no effort to listen to someone who is obviously not a native speaker. They prefer I eat my som tam and tell them it is arroy).
4-0 out of 5 stars Translation defeats the whole purpose of immersion.
This is in response to Mr. Conte's review where he's complaining about having no English anywhere in the program. Hello! The whole point of the program is to begin thinking in Thai and not have to worry about translating or memorizing. How could you possibly have thought about immersing yourself in Thai while still having everything available in English as well? It just doesn't make any sense.
2-0 out of 5 stars Anyone for guessing games?
Boy was my tail waging when I received the bright yellow box containing my 92 lessons of Rosetta Stone Thai Level 1. Wow...92 lessons! I'll be fluent at last! Every advertisement I recall for this product indicated an "entry level" Thai teaching tool, and since I had visited Thailand twice before -- and already had a few key words and phrases in my pocket - and, even studied spoken Thai in Bangkok for a few weeks -- I installed the software the first day and, excitingly, got started on lesson 1.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good vocabulary builder
This program doesn't seem to be good for absolute beginners, but it's good for expanding your vocabulary. It took me a while working with other programs for learning Chinese before I was ready to make good use of this one. Dictionary part of it is awesome because you can see how the words are written in Chinese characters as well as in pinyin. It has lots of fun games to test your comprehension and a lot of the material is focused on testing your knowledge of Chinese characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is
Each language software package can only handle a few angles on language.Talk Now! offers inspired games and oral repetitions for learning vocabulary, telling time and more. The bad reviews must be generated by users who expect everything from one cd.Not me.I love Talk Now! for what it is and hope they expand their scope with all languages as they have with Cantonese. If you want to become fluent, buy several software packages and visit the country for more than a year.If you want an almost effortless and fun introduction this is it.It's one of a kind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best product I've tried
If you just want to learn a few words in Cantonese and learn well by plain rote, this is probably a fair course. However, if you're serious about learning Cantonese, skip this one and try something else. This course just throws out random words with no context of how they'll be used. Grammer and enunciation are given very little attention here. If you've studied Cantonese at all, you'll understand the importance of both. The audio is not terribly clear and the pronounciation doesn't seem to jive with what I'm learning from my wife and other courses.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great methods, mediocre content
The good part about this software is that it provides a fun and engaging way to learn some basic Cantonese vocabulary. The words and phrases are spoken twice, in a male and female voice with accompanying pictures. The games and self tests are fun to work through. It also provides a way to record your voice and compare it to the speakers' pronunciation.

3-0 out of 5 stars one good, one bad
The first cd was the perfect beginning, easy, educational, and even entertaining(i love alliteration!), the second on was very poorly made, it does not teach a thing, It could've been great, but it was boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instant Immersion Japanese 2 CD-Set
I really enjoyed the CD set.It was very inexpensive, a lot of fun, and easy to use. You don't have to install it onto your computer, which makes it really easy to use on other people's computers or portables. The games and activities make it really easy to learn and is a lot of fun so you actually enjoy studying or learning. One thin I didn't like was that the difference in level between the 2 CD's.The first one is a very beginners one and the second is a little advanced. They kind of skip a level. But after a while of studying, I was able to understand it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Words cannot describe my hate for this product.
The first CD I kind of liked. That was when I was young and innocent. The entire program is a joke. The second CD teaches not a thing.I am disgusted, I hate Instant Immersion Products. Some how they always seem to mess something up.A word of advice DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! ... Read more

Wow...I should have heeded the warning of that other 1-star review.
1-0 out of 5 stars No Instruction
This software is basically a series of exercises. I'm sure it's great if you are working in a classroom setting towards Chinese proficiency, but it's basically a $175 paper weight (and free headphone / microphone) if you don't already have a good basic knowledge of the chinese language.
