3-0 out of 5 stars Some regrets
I regret that Microsoft has removed items I had on my last edition (2005)
2-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!.NET 2.0 is too buggy.
I agree with all of the positives of other reviewers. Five stars for the program. Unfortunately, it runs on .NET 2.0, which is so no ready for use that Microsoft doesn't even have an FAQ page about it on their website. Version 2.0 is incompatible with many programs that run on .NET 1.1 and will wreak havoc on your system. Examples: The Complete New Yorker Viewer becomes non-functional and you may not be able to access other computers on your home network. Wait for Microsoft to fix the buggy .NET 2.0 before considering buying. Stick with Encarta 2006 for now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A universe of knowledge on your screen
While Microsoft Encarta Premium 2006 marked Microsoft's commitment to the Web - Microsoft Encarta Premium 2007 marks its commitments to its own technology. The new Encarta relies on Microsoft's powerful, flexible, scalable, and adaptable .Net Framework 2.0. There a price to pay, of course: the time it takes to install the product is much longer and the user is henceforth prompted to constantly download security updates from Microsoft. It is also recommended to turn off your firewall and anti-virus products during installation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous versions
I just upgraded my Webster software to this version for WinXP.It's ok and does the job it's intended to perform. But I liked the previous versions that displayed both the definitions and the thesaurus in parallel panels. Just a matter of display preference, so it's not that important to every user.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for anyone out of high school!
I was thoroughly disappointed. The first few words I looked up in the thesaurus were not listed -- words like upholstery! When I went online to see what I might be able to glean from their online site, first Fogware had not sent me a coupon, then I had to deal with bad customer service (I am not doing business with any companies anymore that give bad support) then after I finally got the coupon code they had left out of my box, the online info is exactly what we have in the cd -- so save your money and do not subscribe to their extended services site unless you need a spanish online dictionary also!VERY BAD!I am now going to go buy Roget's and check it out! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Huh? I give it a 5 for DO NOT BUY! for Arabic, at least.
This is not a great product for Arabic.Microsoft brags that its "Translation Dictionary" for Arabic, included in the software, includes a database of 450,000 words culled from all the major dictionaries out there. But if you try to enter in a semantic grouping of two or more words, such as a verb plus a preposition, you usually get "no entry found."This problem also applies to words that are inflected in any way. Also, the voweling is not included. No voweling , inflections, or verbal phrases!?! DO NOT BUY THIS for Arabic, EVEN if it is your only choice....I am bilingual in Chinese. In all fairness, the conversion tools for characters are useful, but as for the dictionary, the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, Dr. Eye and Jinshanci offer FREE dictionaries that are more useful than this costly one by Microsoft. If you are from Microsoft: 1) please give us a browsable dictionary, 2) include the Arabic vowelling! 3) fire your current Arabists and hire someone better! I feel cheated! For Arabic I wish I could give this an even lower rating. For Chinese and Korean it probably deserves a positive 3 or 4, not higher because there are free or less expensive products that contain many of this products' features and are of better quality. If you are going to charge us $70, make the product good, please. Consumers: BE WARNED!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia Britannica 2007 Opens to the Web
The Encyclopedia Britannica 2007 (established in 1768) is again a completely revamped product. The rate of innovation in the last two editions is impressive and welcome. Its interface is intuitive and uncluttered andit is great fun to use. For instance, it offers a date-based daily selection of relevant information and highly edifying interactive tours of articles and attendant media. The search box is persistent - no need to click on the toolbar's "search" button every time you want to find something in this vast storehouse of knowledge. Moreover, the user can save search results onto handy "Virtual Notecards".
2-0 out of 5 stars CHECK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS!
I just purchased this package. I have been extremely happy with the Brittanica products in the past. HOWEVER, this particular package has the rather unusual requirement that it will run ONLY on G5 and dual core processors! In other words, this will not run on ANY of the majority of Macs currently in use, particularly in educational settings (where the machines tend to be not cutting edge), and won't run on any Mac laptops except the new Mac Books. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Make sure your read this before you buy
Hello to all! If you are like me this you read these reviews in hope to learn about the down side as well as the up side of these products. I will make this short and sweet. I purchased this item at least two months ago and it's a very good piece of gear for those of use that can't spell or just flat out want to have an dictionary on hand 24/7. This item is user friendly and good to have. The bad side is this, ONE you can not safe the dictionary to your palm partly for copyright infringement which I can understand since I to own a company and like to be secure in my dealings. TWO you will have to exit your program in order to use this item which I was unaware of when I brought it. Three it dose have a spelling aid when looking for a word you don't know how to spell but its not like Microsoft word or anything you type the word and if you are off...way off you will have no assistance in finding it which to me defeats the purpose of the item. But other then those issues you will not have a problem with this item. All and all it's good but i would have given it a four or five star rating if I had been able to use it on my palm in conjunction with Microsoft word.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This is not a dictionary you can download onto your memory card. It comes on its own memory card, which you have to insert into your pda to use. You have to carry this dictionary card around with you and when you want to look something up, take your card out of your pda and then insert this one. It's impractical. For me it was a waste of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Disagree with you ALL
I personally LOVE this little dictionary. I use it in my Zire 72. The dictionary has lots of function and i have had no problems using it for every day use in my English 102 class. Its wonderful. It understands my Grafitti perfectly, and like other reviewers didnt make me go back. Its extremely easy to read, easy to move around the dictionary. You can click on one of the words in the definition and you get a little pop up window that allows you to view that defintion and then return to the previous word or name or whatever. There are biographical and geographic entries as well, not to mention the thesaurus. I keep the dictionary in my palm case all day every day (right next to my MP3 card). The software was quick and easy to install, I had expected to fight with it but it just .."poof"ed.I've had my dictionary since my 101 class where my teacher required it. We rarely used it but i kept it any way and am so glad i did. Maybe I'm just special, but I'd like to give some credit to the card! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia membership ends Oct 2006
The encyclopedia membership for Encarta ends on Oct. 2006, so don't bother buying this if you plan to use it for a later school year. Also, keep in mind that this is a subscription software that will need to be renewed each year.On Microsoft's web site, the monthly membership price is $4.95 per month, the cost of the software includes the membership. But it is not based on when you buy the software. It is based on the academic school year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best CD-ROM Thesaurus
Bar none, the best CD-ROM Dictionary and Thesaurus -- only problem is, it doesn't work on many versions of XP.
3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
EDIT: I have found that this works okay for me in Windows XP Pro. Some problems with the point-and-define thing, but I had those in Windows 2000 too.4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't play well with XP
I originally bought this software when I had Windows ME. It worked really well and I loved it. It's simple to use--click the icon and you are ready to look up words. When I got a new computer which came with Windows XP, my original software would not work. I bought a new version thinking my old version just was not compatible. As it turns out, there is some issue with all versions of the software working with XP. Topics Entertainment is aware of the issue, but unable to resolve it. Topics Entertainment had a relatively friendly and helpful technical support department (though somewhat slow) and they offered to take the software back after the problem failed to be resolved. But that still leaves me without my much-missed dictionary program. If you don't have XP, then I highly recommend this program. If you have XP, find an alternative (which I am searching for presently.) ... Read more

as my old Works Suite 2002.I tried installing the 2002 suite on my new computer. Kept getting an error message about not being able to display the EULA agreement for me to accept, and thus wont install the Works Task launcher. I tried all the "fixes" but it just wouldnt install, so, I bought the Works Suite 2005 from Amazon.Well, I got an error message after I installed it. This time about not being able to run it on Windows 95, 98 and 2000.Well, I'm using XP Pro.Long story short, I just right clicked on TASK LAUNCHER, THEN COMPATIBILITY, THEN UNCHECKED THE COMPATIBILITY MODE BOX, and the program started up.I also had to uninstall Office 2003, which uses Word 2003 because Works Suite 2005uses Word 2002. This was on the advice of Microsoft Tech support.

4-0 out of 5 stars Potential problems
I had problems with my Britannica order that customers may anticipate. The first version I received came in a 2006 Edition box and jewel case, but the CD's were 2005 Edition. The replacement (which Amazon did promptly) had the correct CD's but there was no serial number on the jewel case or packaging (you are asked for it when you install). As a lark, I put in 16 numbers at random and it accepted it without a problem.Still, can you imagine such incompetence from an encylopedia company?

4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia Britannica 2006 Delux for PC
The first few times I used Britannica 2006 I was amazed at the additional information it supplied, not available on my other encylopedia computer program. However, I ran into that new search technique they use and even though I write data bases I was not successful in finding out which birds regurgitate food to their chicks -- crazy search anyway. I'm sure the answer is there but I only found the answer applying to one bird -- a quail; and I was looking for a buzzard.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wordsmith Utility Tool
"Word Menu 2.2" is an amazing and fun program to use. It allows even the smartest of writers to express themselves with more accuracy, fluidity, and creativeness -- it makes one's writing look more intelligent. "Word Menu's" interface is actually fun to use and simple to maneuver around while looking for that perfect word. Every writer or wordsmith should own a copy of this invaluable program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated product
Word Menu 2.2 offers quickly accessible words, however the defintions are vague and indirect. Many words you would expect to find are missing, and frankly this is a program that would be most useful for people learning the english language, seeking to understand genres which certain words pertain to. It is my opinion that most english speakers already have a strong grasp on most of these words and subjects they entail; buying this for any trivial benefit of searching words by subjects, is foolhardy. It's not worth 30 dollars, I wish I would not have purchased it and do not reccomend it. If the price was 15 dollars or less, I would suggest "hey why not". $30 is an unreasonable price for this simplistic vocabulary lexicon and is more wisely spent on something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, needing attention to basic details.
This is a very comprehensive resource of categorised words and their meanings, which is easily navigated and understood. Loaded onto a laptop, one has a lot of power easily to hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, detailed, and comprehensive.
You will never find a nicer encyclopedia for $45.I own an 80s version of their printed encyclopedia as well, which I have since abandoned using. The convenience of its search capability (while not the most intuitive around) is excellent compared to old fashioned research.Wikipedia may be free, but as a literate and technical professional, I have personally noted several inaccuracies in its content.Such inaccuracies are far less likely in the contents of Britannica.Additionally, the reference materials and citations refer to legitimate sources, vice other often-flaky websites. They lose 'one star' for lack of a basic zoom function, clutter on the screen that cannot be removed, and static text that -should- behave more like a cascading style-sheet than a jpeg. Fix the GUI, and it's nearly perfect for the money.
1-0 out of 5 stars A very poor product
I think it's obvious that the people who designed this interface had no intention of ever using it. For example, the text area only takes up a third of the overall allotted space, and is flanked by clutter on both sides. This provides for a most unpleasant reading experience, as each sentence is broken into several lines consisting of only several words per line. Sadly, this setup cannot be changed. I used to have the online version of Britannica, which didn't have these annoyances. I also recall the articles having overall greater depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A world of complete knowledge
My father bought me the Encyclopaedia Briannica 2006, ultimate reference suite. When I install it on my computer, I became extremely happy because it contains everything I needed. It help me to do a lot of projects and home works. It is good for students like me. Really it is a world of knowledge. It's new videos, images, content etc. are very usefull. So I say that everyone should buy this for you and your child. It will help you to know everything in the world. Before buying this I have the Encyclopaedia Britannica 2003, deluxe edition. When comparing these two, The level of 2006, ultimate reference suite is very high. It islittle slow, but it is not a problem when compared to the content inside it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the original books, skip the poorly designed, hard-to-use software.
The NIDOTTE BOOK set is wonderful! Compact, infinitely user-friendly, accessible in every way, and head-and-shoulders above every other Hebrew/Theological dictionary for the Hebrew Bible for beginning and intermediate students. However, this particular SOFTWARE has some built in, severely limiting "gotcha's" that will throw average users off and even make it unusable. Zondervan offers an all-important "patch" on their web site, but it involves a 6-7 step do-it-yourself method in which you have to "open the hood" of Windows more than average users will feel comfortable doing. And even then, for this user, it still didn't work. By "didn't work", I mean that the all important "search" function simply doesn't work! It produces endless loops of error messages. The result is...a clunker...and for something that is billed as "version 5.1", it is a very surprising clunker. My advice is to stick to the multi-volume book set until these people figure out how to build software that doesn't come with built-in bugs! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars For kids
Very disappointing product from Microsoft .very light in content, short articles, very few animations and videos. I'll call it initiation encyclopedia .may be its good for children from 3 to 12 years old but absolutely not for the whole family as stated.I'm university studentand I find Encarta Deluxe Encyclopedia 2004 useless .

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for kids
My two boys love this! It's perfect for researching school assignments.I appreciate having a reliable resource that enables them to do research by themselves, without always having to go on the internet, which can be a safety concern for parents. The graphics are wonderful, and the audio files add to the learning experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but better Encarta Reference Library
It is better to buy Encarta Reference Library, because it has more text and features (Atlas and so on). I have reviewed it if you want extra information. The system requirements are about the same. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better, but it does work with MS Word
Definitions not as subtantive as I was expecting. However, the program intergrates well with my MS on 2000 O/S and XP Platform.I believe some are having problems because they may not be following the wizard closely and downing loading those specified files into the "START" file of the Word program.

1-0 out of 5 stars The poorest excuse for a dictionary
My excitment went vanished merely five minutes after installing this software. And I immediately uninstalled it and tossed the CD's into the trash bin without a second thought. One gets the idea who much aversion this thing incurred in me.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not compatable with other apps.
The biggest let down is that you can't access the dictionary from any other programs or the web. The company claims it integrates with ms word, but I just receive errors when it tries to work with ms word. Also, you can't paste a word you want to look up into the search box you have to type it in instead -which takes more time. The definitions are shorter than I was expecting. I do not recommend this product. ... Read more
