2-0 out of 5 stars OK but Don't Bet Your Life On It!!
I've purchased the latest S&T for the last 4 maybe 5 years and have become somewhat dependent on it for accurate routing whenever I thought we needed directions. In the past, one attribute of the program always annoyed me, namely, the strange text directions.I still read them a couple times, print them, grab a yellow highlighter and select the text that made sense. Then I augment the directions with my own notes in the margin.I could never figure out why msoft needed 5 instructions to tell me to stay on the same route. If you've ever used the product, you know what I mean. With this latest version, that problem/issue still persists but there's something new: errors and wrong directions!!I usually compare "fastest" to "shortest" routes.I have seen numerous cases where I had to trick the software to show me the most correct route. An example would be selecting the wrong direction off an exit of an interstate or even better, routing you in the oppposite direction to get to a road when there is a more direct route.I always update the traffic/highway info everytime. The GPS interface works fine; would be nice to have voices but I really don't miss that feature.Biggest impression: my wife and I have learned to not blindly trust it but rather we challenge every turn and pay very close to what it is telling us as we approach decision points. This year I almost went to Delorme but its reviews were even more disappointing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably OK for planning, horrible in the car
I have substantial experience with both the Toyota and Honda in-car GPS systems and frankly feel somewhat lost in a car without one.
3-0 out of 5 stars Installation problem
I tried install the software into my laptop for 3 hours.the software would find some registry errors in my windows and quits.I was not able to install the software into my computer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Get Lost ! - it's easy with this software
We just returned from a trip to France where we had a rental car for 10 days and covered about 2000km.
4-0 out of 5 stars Auto Traveling in Europe - A breeeeeeeeze
In 2004, had to buy Autoroute from English merchant for more than twice this price - and it was worth it. On arrival in Calais, to departure from Paris three weeks later (thru Reims, Bastogne, Strasbourg, Dijon, Caen, Paris, Bordeaux, Rennes, etc, this gem (with a GPS unit) offered continual real time "this is where you are" as well as "re-calculated routes" to get us where we wanted to go, no matter how many unplanned detours we took.Would never travel without it...
3-0 out of 5 stars AutoRoute 2006 - town data missing
The program is nearly the same as Streets and Trips for the US. It's generally good but does not include many of the streets in towns in Ireland where I used it. Excellent for going town to town but real deficiencies in the towns when looking for specific addresses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Shipping Time Frame is WRONG!
Yes I like the product, but Amazon misleads you about when they can ship it.Said USUALLY ships in 24 hours and I paid more to get 3 to 5 days shipping. Now they email me saying there is a delay (AND YOU CAN'T CANCEL THE ORDER).I ordered on Oct. 17, 2006 and their email now says the new est. date is Oct. 26th through Oct. 29th.AND...what is NOT funny... the web site says if you order it NOW you get free 2nd day delivery.I guess they needed my software to sell to someone else. They are still making me pay for the 3-5 day shipping and the only way I can stop this order is to wait until it arrives and either reject it (won't happen since this is a company) orI'll have to spend my dime, time, and trouble to return it.WATCH OUT about AMAZON misleading you on the availability. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Delorme disappoints for the most part, but still is adequate for the topo user with casual needs
I've used various Delorme products for a long time. I've stopped buying some of their products, such as their Street Atlas for Handhelds which has become essentially unusable and is increasingly feature impoverished compared to competitors such as TomTom.
4-0 out of 5 stars decent software
This is a good software for casual use (hiking, biking, geocaching), but not without issues. On the positive side, it definitely beats all non-digital (scanned USGS maps) alternatives. The level of details is good enough(how many of us need to know topography down to 5 feet?). The fact that maps are digitally generated (with vectors I believe) makes all the labels clear at any scale. It has two advantages over its main "digital" competitor, NG Topo. First, all of the US is on one DVD for the price of separate state/region CDs from NG. And second, it is available. I could not even find NG's Northeast edition anywhere on the web! One might think NH and ME are some obscure corners of the globe and not big tourist destinations.
1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
As is typical with software claiming to be "topo", it is not. Expecting that the buyer of topos will typically be someone looking for USGS quads this software is not as advertised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
I want access to a world atlas that help me understand current events. I like to listen to short wave radio broadcasts, as well. For example, I wanted to see the details associated with the Israeli-Lebanon conflict and using online media was a brutal experience over my 56k dialup connection. My hard copy atlas was helpful, but a little out of date, so I looked at software products. The MS program was expensive and it had many options that I didn't need or want. (I'm not a kid anymore and don't want online help with my homework, for example.) And the reviews were not too favorable for the MS product, either. 3D Globe comes with a free Lunar Map, as well. I have a small telescope. While this is not a necessity, it is a nice addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vector maps vs. quad maps
Delorme's vector based topographical maps are superior for computer applications. If you are looking for professional accuracy, I'd recommend that you purchase individual quad maps from the USGS. In my opinion, this is the best consumer grade topo software available on the PC to-date.

1-0 out of 5 stars Delorme Topo USA a poor choice
This product has very poor detail. Many streams and other land features are missing.Working as a forester I found this product to be totally useless.Delorme's 3D topoquad series is much better, as it uses scans of the USGS topographic maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for cycling - love it!
I haven't explored all of the features yet, and may never use many of them. I bought it specifically for cycling use, planning routes, estimating distances and climbs, that sort of thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent software, but not worth the cash
Microsoft has, as always, produced decent software. It is nothing to get excited over, but it does its job.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dont think I'll like it as much..........
as my old Works Suite 2002.I tried installing the 2002 suite on my new computer. Kept getting an error message about not being able to display the EULA agreement for me to accept, and thus wont install the Works Task launcher. I tried all the "fixes" but it just wouldnt install, so, I bought the Works Suite 2005 from Amazon.Well, I got an error message after I installed it. This time about not being able to run it on Windows 95, 98 and 2000.Well, I'm using XP Pro.Long story short, I just right clicked on TASK LAUNCHER, THEN COMPATIBILITY, THEN UNCHECKED THE COMPATIBILITY MODE BOX, and the program started up.I also had to uninstall Office 2003, which uses Word 2003 because Works Suite 2005uses Word 2002. This was on the advice of Microsoft Tech support.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
Don't bother with this - I don't know how they managed to get the National Geographic name on this product. It's almost as if someone said "Let's scan a whole bunch of maps from USGS and put the worst interface in the world on the program."
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
National Geographic Backroads Explorer 3D over-promises and under-delivers.The marketing and packaging are very slick -"Seamless USGS topographic maps of the entire United States".Unfortunately, the topo maps are very limited in their resolution, scale and usefulness.Apparently, you'll need to buy their Topo! State Series product for these features."Customize and print photo-quality maps" .... I guess it depends on your definition of "photo-quality" .... this is a real stretch in my opinion. The software also has an awkward and clumsy interface.Bottom line = don't waste your money on this software at appx. $50.The USGS has an excellent web site with topo maps - most of them are free. With a little searching on the internet, you'll find excellent maps on various state and federal web sites (departments of transportation, federal highway maps, parks and recreation, etc.) - all for free. Why pay for a lousy regurgitation of maps that your tax dollars have already created ?

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad but not good
kind of a cheesy review, but true. Its not all its written up to be, but it does have a few features that are worthy. The map detail is not very detail, and the 3d feature is not very useful, but if you looking for a simple topo mapping software without investing much cash, this might be for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.
I have used tripmaker to plan a number of trips since version 1.I am up to Tripmaker Deluxe by Topics which may be prior to this version but they have not changed much recently.I find it very useful in plotting daily mileage for different route options. My wife does not wish to travel more than 6 hours a day.Tripmaker keeps me out of trouble. For instance, I had 3 days between Yellowstone and Glacier NP.With Tripmake I tried different routes to stop at the most desirable sites in between without overdoing the driving each day.It is this sort of "what-if" testing that makes it so valuable and then print up the final choices, get on-line, make reservations and go on the road. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sales Analysis Tool
Found this to be an excellent sales analysis tool.MapPoint provided a visual way to correlate detailed sales information with geographic areas.Would highly recommend to those who need to better understand strategic territories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mapping Program!
MapPoint is an easy to use and powerful mapping program.I use it frequently for territory analysis for work and also use it for some personal reference and mapping projects.Defintely worth buying.

2-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft MapPoint 2004
I purchased this product thinking that after using and enjoying MS Streets and Trips (since 2001), that this would be a step up.I was also looking for additional features that I knew were a bit weak in the Streets and Trips product.Boy, was I surprised. Not only is the product, no better than the Streets and Trips product, but the maps for small Canadian cities (ie.,populations of 35,000 to 100,000) were so out of date they were useless.Where I had hoped to use the enhanced features of MapPoint in my business, the abyssmal road maps made the product useless. I had hoped to also track the location of our deliveries to customers within the city and surrounding towns.Again, this was not possible due to the fact that the maps were at least 3 to 4 years out of date.Had I paid only $39.99 to $59.99 for the product, I may have kept it for use when I travel to the U.S., but for $400, I returned to product within the week (the very first Microsoft product I have ever been dissappointed with). MapPoint 2004 is a very, very marginal product and most definitely not worth paying $400 or even half that price, given the poor map qualities.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars cannot recommend this software
I really cannot recommend this software.I don't know why DeLorme refuses to use the simple windows interface. Nothing is where you would expect it to be. There isn't even a simple "Save As" dialog box. There is no way to name anything the way YOU want to name it and the print dialog box doesn't allow you to just print a couple of the pages you need from a 30 page document.
3-0 out of 5 stars Over the river and through the woods
Overall this is a wonderful product, However, and I think this goes for most products of this type. The maps are outdated.I travel along many areas alot of which have seen a great amount of development, resulting in new roads or chaning road beds.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not User Friendly & Outdated Maps

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
This product works just fine. I don't know what more you want. I've found nothing out there that works as good as this program. Quit writing bad reviews:)

1-0 out of 5 stars do anything you can to avoid using route 66
if you have used microsoft's "street and trips" before you wont like "route66". its slow (even on a powerbook g4 1.67) and not as friendly as "s & t". The "s & t" works faster than "route 66" on virtual pc7 with xp (this part i dont like much) on the same powerbook. If you have not used "s & t" before ,try another option on osx or try what i did (it worked better for me).

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money-this is a piece of junk
First and foremost this program does not allow you to access Exit numbers. You can look on the map till your eyes hurt, but you'll never be able to tell the Driver, "in five miles take exit 26". No exit numbers, I contacted the company and they confirmed that they are working on this for future versions. That such a simple navigational tool is not available is enough to render this program useless in my opinion, but that doesn't even scratch the surface.

I picked up this software out of curiousity; already own Delorme Earthmate 2003, which is not real-time capable without a co-driver. This software is simply not capable at all. For example, I am looking at a street in the Baltimore area, 3615 Campfield Road, in street finder. I click the "Find" menu item and enter "Campfield Road" and "Baltimore" and I get the message, "No matches found" when I click, "Find Now." Whahuh?
