2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Fastest Way to Learn a Language
Fairfield's marketing is much better than their engineering. There are eight units with 11 or 12 lessons each. Each lesson has 10 parts. And each part has 4 phrases or sentences, arranged as picture (or cartoon) squares (sometimes related, sometimes not).In the preview for each each part, one selects a square and the phrase is uttered.Unfortunately the Hebrew is plastered on top of the picture, thereby preventing certain details from being decipherable. There is no English translation provided, nor are there any grammar lessons. One cannot click on a word to get its meaning. So what happens is that one has to make a guess as to the meaning, which may or may not be correct. In the guided exercises, the program rapidly goes through each of the four pictures, then you get quizzed. In the speaking section, you must mimic the speaker as best you can--but the Hebrew phrase is not displayed on the screen.Even worse, the voice frequency display does not readily halt. All in all, this product needs a lot of work before I will recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching tool!!!!
This learning course does not allow you to go away from it without learning the language intuitivly...at least if you accually use it:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Program for Learning Hebrew
Although I did know some basic Hebrew, this program has begun to teach me Modern Hebrew in a very effective way.I definitely would recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Manage your expectations
I went through Arabic level one with the online version, and I found it fairly useful. After reading other reviews, I would caution shoppers to be realistic about their expectations...Rosetta Stone uses learning techniques similar to those used by a child learning their first language, so it's a good idea to remember how that actually went. It's pretty likely that your first "formal" education in your native language started at about age 5...after you had been immersed in the language EVERY DAY for FIVE YEARS.If you expect to reach a similar level of proficiency in a language with a completely different alphabet and different sentence constructions after taking an entry-level immersion course, you are going to be disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useless on its own, powerful if used with other material
If you don't understand the Arabic alphabet, this will be useless. But if you get a dictionary and learn the alphabet, this is the best software you can get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good when in conjuction with other materials
The Rosetta Stone software can be very useful to the learning and study of arabic as long as you use it in conjuction with other materials. Rosetta Stone Arabic teaches Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which is a more academic and universal form of arabic as it is based on the written language. This differs from colloquial dialects which are rarely written and can differ greatly n different regions. The materials I used, and in fact are still using, are the Rosetta Stone software along with The Arabic Alphabet, by Nicholas Awde and Arabic for Dummies, by Amine Bouchentouf. These materials cover all the general subjects required for the learning of MSA. The Arabic Alphabet covers the alphabet and does an excellent job and should be covered before the use of the Rosetta Stone software. The Rosetta Stone software itself is essential to the building up of a vocabulary. It starts with basic nouns and then building on them and then forming sentences by adding verbs and adjectives.Through this method you begin to understand the structure and grammar of the language, however without further instruction it can be hard to define exactly what the grammatical structure is. The software, however, is weak on the fact that it does not teach the alphabet, it only shows it in conjuction with the media which it is teaching through. It also does not cover conversational abilities. You may be able to say, "The small boy kicked a black and white ball inside a large house and broke a window", but you won't be able to say "Hello, my name is x". Luckily the other two materials cover these apects. Arabic for Dummies provides an excellent introduction to MSA along with having a simple yet informative coverage of arabic grammar. Arabic for Dummies also supplies the converasational aspect as it includes 17 chapters covering most everyday situations. However this book avoids using the arabic alphabet although it gives a brief introduction of it. Because of this I recommend that this book come first as it provides a solid introduction and shows you exactly what your getting into. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good program, but restrictive
I like this program. The accent is great and it is very easy, even fun to follow, and it teaches the language well - it is very natural so that thought comes in the language rather than an attempt to make a fast mental 'translation.'
5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to learn a language
The Rosetta Stone method is simply the best way you could possibly learn any foreign language.By removing the slow, deliberating step of English translation from the process of language comprehension, it teaches Latin to you the way it should be taught.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement for those learning Latin
I am a linguist and have purchased six of Rosetta Stone's language programmes. I have found them to be excellent supplemental tools in aquiring foreign languages. Without translations, your mind is forced to rely upon context (visual and verbal) to extract meaning. The repetive phrases ranging from one or two words to an entire paragraph engrain a syntactical map of how sentence structures are fabricated. I found that the more you work these lessons, the better they work for you. Repeating the phrases out loud each time after the speaker is much more powerful than simply listening.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than most, but not nearly what it could be
Depending on your learning style, this might be the best non-classroom language learning method out there. This software you two advantages over learning from a book/cassette that make it easily worth the cost.First, you get to hear the words as they are introduced, and see a picture of what they describe. This engages both auditory and kinesthetic learning processes.Second, the extensive practice options essentially set your learning methodology for you (no need to make your own flashcards, etc), which makes this a fairly stress-free, almost passive process.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
Purchased this after having experienced their Spanish course. It is a great software to have.It builds up slowly and is very easy to follow.I, especially, enjoy the companion book.It is entirely in Hindi.I take it with me a lot and read a chapter or two a day.I really wish they would add levels to this course like they do with the European language courses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome

2-0 out of 5 stars Sign Language
The video portion frequently skips. The signers have different hand motions, so it can be hard to tell the same sign.Would be interested to see a rating system of beginner, intermediate, advanced from Instant Immersion on their product(s).

4-0 out of 5 stars Instant Immersion ASL Deluxe -Good for the Beginner
I have had the Instant Immersion ASL Deluxe program for a little over a month.I think it is very helpful for those just learning to sign, but not for the more advanced signer.I have taken sign language courses in the past, and to me it is very similar, with the exception of that in school I had to learn signs from drawings, which can be difficult to see which way to hold you hand or turn you fingers. The program uses video to show how to correctly display fingers and how to make proper hand gestures. It also allows you to replay and to slow down the video if you need more practice with certain words or phrases.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This software is offers a good start for learning ASL.I've learned the general syntax of ASL, a bit of vocabulary, and seen different people's "accents".It will also be a good reference for me because of the dictionary that is included. However, I wish it had better games and quizes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Early experience with the Russian version
I've been in Russia for two weeks and I've had three sessions with Rosetta Stone.I'm a very poor language student, and Russian is not coming easily to me.However the repetitious (but not boring) nature of the program has you moving through the exercises at a fairly fast pace using generic photos and a comination of the spoken word and Cyrillic text. It's too early to tell if I'll soon be able to converse with a Russian beyond the most basic words and phrases, but I'm going to press on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great to lhelp you learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I am very glad I bought this program. While it is true that the instruction is strictly beginner's level, and the native script is missing for most non-Latin based languages, this is still a great tool if you want to sample a large number of languages and decide which ones to take further with a more detailed course. This is also great for people studying a more exotic language for which there aren't any stand-alone audio programs for you to practice pronunciation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing product!
This is truly an amazing product. It supplies audio pronounciation for 76 langues, and essential vocabulary for 25 others. These 76 languages are Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belorussian, Bangali, Brazilian, Breton, Bulgarian, Canadian French, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Estonian, Farsi, Finnish, Flemish, Galician, Greek, Guarani, Haitian Creole, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luganda, Luxembourgish, Malagasy, Malay, Norwegian, Pidgin English, Polish, Portuguese, Quechua, Romanian, Russian, Scottish, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Somali, Sotho, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tahitian, Thai, Tswana, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Welsh, Wolof, Xhosa, Yiddish, Yoruba, and Zulu. The other 25 are Asturian, Aymara, Bemba, Blackfoot, Cebuano, Chamorro, Cornish, Ecuadorian Quechua, Faroese, Frisian, Inuktitut, Kongo, Macedonian, Maori, Maya, Mohawk, Nahuatl, Papago, Provencal, Romansch, Romany, Ruanda, Somoan, Sepedi, Shona, Sicilian, Sorbian, Swazi, and Tongan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for fluency
This is an EXCELLENT product if you're tourist-travelling, or if you plan to use it as I do:a resource for students who are studying geography of the world. The students will be researching the spoken language(s) of their selected/assigned countries and will incorporate as many native languages as possible into the various products they produce to demonstrate learning. The phrases/words that are utilized in 101 Languages isn't enough to actually LEARN a language, but may be of help if you're tourist-travelling or if you're begining to dabble in the feel of a particular language. It is certainly NO Rosetta Stone, which is where a person should go if needing to actually LEARN a language with software.EASY to use and install. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone Swedish
This is by far the best language software program that has ever been made. Now the price is extremely fair. I actually paid $195 for the product from a kiosk in the local area. The reason I was willing to pay full price for the product was a couple reasons. First the online subscription has issues and doesn't always seem to run smoothly. Second, I received a great demonstration of the product from the sales associate at a local kiosk. Third, Amazon only gives me 30 days to evaluate the product. If I am not satisfied with the purchase, I have to pay a 20% restocking fee. I want to be able to use the program without having to worry about being online at the same time. And finally if you buy directly from a kiosk, you get 6 months to evaluate the product. There is no restocking fee with a purchase made at a local kiosk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great language software
I have tried my share of Swedish tapes and software over the past few years. This is the first software I have come across that is easy to use and intuitive. Also nice is that fact that it isn't just geared towards tourists going for a short trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning Greek if you stick with it
My boyfriend is Greek and got me the Rosetta Stone Greek Level 1 and 2.I've learned a lot from the program, although I admit I have him at hand to help me with any confusion that a lot of people here complain about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good With Pimsleur
This program is okay and it does teach some important concepts and will greatly enhance your reading and listening skills. However as another review mentioned for faster and more applicable Greek start with Pimsleur 1 and then use Rosetta Stone.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good as a vocabulary builder...nothing else.
I have been involved with languages all my life. I am a translator, I teach languages at a school that teaches languages, I have taught languages at an Ivy League university. I speak a number of languages extremely well from being self-taught. I am not saying this to blow my own horn but to illustrate that I am a living example of learning and teaching foreign languages.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Verbal Introduction to the Arabic Language
I felt from the beginning these two CD's was just a verbal introduction to immerse one into the world of the Arabic language.I do not think it was ever intended to teach writing and grammar by any means.
1-0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment
The first CD - Talk Now! - was nice for learning some basic vocabulary items and expressions. It's good to know before you buy it that you get nothing but vocabulary, no grammar at all.The second CD surprised me because I imagined it would be more of the same, but you can't use the second CD UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW ARABIC!That struck me as bizarre, since I expected the second to build on the first. But they were miles apart in level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Arabic

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Norwegian
This CD-ROM provides an interactive format in which to begin to learn Norwegian with the help of your computer. The instruction is pitched at the absolute beginners level and covers some basic vocabulary and useful phases. The instruction typically links a Norwegian word or phrase with its pronounciation in Norwegian and with an English translation.Pictures and graphics are provided to reinforce the word or phrase. The various segments of instruction include quizes to test comprehension. The format is likely to be very user-friendly for children; adults may outrun the instruction fairly quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dynamic Immersion method really works!
This is a great package! You get two CD-Roms, i.e. the application disk and the Course CD-Rom, a User's Guide book and the curriculum textbook with complete transcriptions of each exercise. The Dynamic Immersion method is fantastic. You learn a new language by playing with pictures, and little by little you learn new words, then simple phrases and finally more elaborate structures. The score you see on the screen helps you to improve by playing. In no time you realize to know lots of new words and phrases. I can only recommend you to buy it! Enjoy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
If I hadn't studied Swahili already, I would have found it utterly confusing after just a few lessons. As an intermediate student, however, it was fairly good for revision, but not worth the hefty price - had I been unwise enough to purchase it instead of trying the demo at Rosetta Stone's website. The first problem with it is that the language and pronunciation is very stilted and unnatural: it is technically accurate, but no native speaker would speak like this. More to the point, it doesn't accurately explain the noun classes of Swahili. I know it aims to do away with memorization and drill, but it becomes needlessly hard when one insists on learning a bantu language without first learning the various noun classes. Later on you're going to have difficulty figuring out why it's "ndege inaruka" and "vitu vitatu vinatoka" whereas it's "watu watatu wanatoka" and so on and so forth. I only tried the online version so I don't know if the CD comes accompanied by a grammar book. If it does, all good and great, but consider getting some Pimsleur lessons to smooth out that pronunciation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
I thought this cd-rom was a great learning tool to use. It is very interactive. There are two quizzes for each category. You learn many words and the people really pronouce the words clearly. The only problem is that there is some English words in there that I wish weren't since English is my first language. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Online version consumes 100% cpu... useless.
I just subscribed to the online version (9/9/2006) to study Chinese and upgraded to the 9.x player, however running the app still consumes 100% of the cpu on my Mac G4 laptop. This makes it pretty unusable.I have read many other complaints about this.I can't imagine why they won't address it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Really like the format, However:
I also have the Auralog Tell Me More Arabic and have only browsed through both of them a little bit (under an hour). So far I am liking the Rosetta Stone's structure better so far (go online and do a demo of Spanish or something). However, there is a big problem with Rosetta Stone; on one of my desktops and one laptop they both always have 100% CPU Usage, this is very annoying.Although I have a Pentium M it still gets loud and very, very hot when running at 100%.I would like to be able to use Dragon Naturally Speaking Pro 8 with it if it is possable, but with CPU at 100% it just crawls.I hope there is a work around on this other wise I'll be forced to use Auralog's Tell Me More. I tried downloading Daemon Tools and set up a virtual CD-Rom drive and that doesn't do anything either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but flawed
This program is, on the surface, attractive for learning Arabic as it uses a system of pictures and sounds to introduce basic concepts and words and is a change from drier textbooks. However, it suffers from forcing Arabic to follow a universal template mainly designed for the European languages. Concepts and structures that are simple in many European languages (e.g. numbers/plurals, etc.) are introduced early in the program. They are NOT simple in Arabic! Add to this the fact that the "plural" is often illustrated by two people, meaning that the dual has also to be introduced at an early stage, and you can begin to see the flaws. Having said all that, if you are following a classroom or self-teach course, you could amuse yourself and get some extra practice with this program. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pimsleur
Folks: the reviewer that mentioned Pimsleur was comparing the way the two companies APPROACH LESSONS.The language is irrelevant. And the reviewer was correct- Pimsleur's approach for language study is more like being in a high school class where you act like a parrot and simply learn memorize structure rules. The Rosetta products are much more effective because there are decision processes involved (among other things) that help you immerse yourself in the language vs repetition.

3-0 out of 5 stars What?
The previous commenter: Your stupid Pimsleur does not even have a Turkish program. Wake up before dropping a line!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Pimsleur.
Having taken the entire Pimsleur Spanish course and having begun Rosetta Stone Turkish (20 lessons so far), I prefer the Pimsleur approach for the following reasons:

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so for the money
The idea and format aren't bad. I would have liked it if there had been a few more words to learn. Also, instead of learning animal names, which aren't very useful if you don't live on a farm, they should have included some simple sentences. A little more material or a little lower price would have increased my rating to 4 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars There must be a better bang for your buck.
I bought this software on the recommendation of some software review site, and I must say my 9 year old daughter and I were disappointed. The graphics are sometimes hard to make out on the screen. (The animation altogether isn't very appealing at all, but that's not why I bought it . . . )And my daughter kept repeating, "But I want to learn sentences!" It's just an okay introduction if you want to learn the names of fruits and vegetables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome For Kids
KidSpeak 6-in-1 is an awesome product for kids to have fun with and learn several languages(Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Hebrew). The animation is very fun and my kids really love this. I love the fact that my child will talk to me in a different language and I'm sure other parents would agree. When it comes down to it, Transparent Language did an awesome job with this software and I couldn't be more satisfied with it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Instructional CD - Talk Now! Learn Tagalog
Teaches a working vocabulary. Games provided are based on repeating the words so it does imprint the words. However, they do not provide any basics as to how to put words together to create sentences. It's still OK though as it does claim to be appropriate for "absolute beginners".

1-0 out of 5 stars You won't be able to talk back and forth with this.
If you are looking to buy this software in order to speak to someone back and forth, this is not the product for you. It will teach you phrases and questions, but you won't be able to understand any answers that a native speaker might give you because it doesn't teach you that. You will be able to identify objects in a house or building, but you won't know how to use them in a sentence or even in a fragmented sentence. This is also true for colors. If this is what you rely on to travel somewhere you might find yourself in the middle of a croud just saying azul(blue)......pula(red).... malalim na azul(dark blue)....Nasaan ang maipaparada ng kotse(where can I park the car?) and then even when you ask where can I park the car you won't know where to park it because you won't understand anything that people will tell you because it doesn't teach you that(people might think you're retarded haha). It only teaches you numbers up to 20, so you're out of luck if you ask magkano ito? (how much is this?) and the answer is 150 pisos. You'll just have to hand a merchant a wad of cash and hope he is honest and gives you your change. However, with all the bad things out of the way, this might make a good start for you to learn how to say the words correctly, even though the guy that talk doesn't pronounce the words correctly on there, just click on the girl(she says the correct pronunciations). After completing the CD, Which only took a bout a week and a day and scoring a perfect score on everything on the CD,I would say that this software is incomplete. The manufacturer could have done a better job. I give it a 1 out of 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good software to learn the basics
This CD is "fast, fun & user friendly" just like the good people at Talk Now say.It plays on both Windows and Mac computers. I recommend it for what it is.A beginner's learning tool for the essential words and phases.A useful feature is you can learn using YOUR native language as you have choice of over 70 languages.I tried Chinese as I know it reasonably well and it worked just OK - I feel they designed it primarily for those with English as their 1st language. So if you American, Brit, Aussie, or Canadian this is a good beginner's guide for you.Read more
