Editorial Review

ChemTutor Excalibur is an interactive course that covers chemistry from high school up through the first year of college. Each of this edition's 20 subject areas offers a comprehensive tutorial and quiz section that tests mastery. Structured to enable learning by discovery, the tutorials also add interactivity and immediate feedback that reinforce learning. Students study at their own pace and move freely through the subjects, skipping those they already know. One of ChemTutor Excalibur's best features is a practice-exam section that prepares students for finals, as well as the SAT II Subject Test in Chemistry, the AP Chemistry Exam, and state proficiency exams like the New York State Regents Exam in Chemistry. Reviewed and well received by chemistry faculty and students alike, ChemTutor Excalibur raises grades and test scores, while students learn and have fun with chemistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
My daughter is in tenth grade and started preparing for chemistry over the summer. She has raved about this product not only helping her to study, but making chemistry enjoyable as well. She currently has an "A" in chemistry. This product is well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars grrrrreat
i was not doing so well in chem for the first 2 trimesters.i was real worried about the final but then i got chemtutor.it turned grade around.i just took the final a day ago and i got an 87.i went from a d in the beggining of the year to an 87 on the final.i reccomend this program to any one struggling in chem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up for easy extra help.
Chemistry is certainly the hardest class that high school can offer to its students. Myself i had some difficulties especially with english being my second language. I needed help, so i checked online for some program that could help me succeed in that class. That's when i found chem tutor Excalibur. The program helped me big time, and since i use it, i have 90's. Chem tutor has everything that has to be cover. It's well explained and fun. This program is really worth to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend PhysicsTutor Excalibur
This interactive physics tutorial on CD format is divided into 20 topics in all the content areas of the AP Physics B curriculum. It contains dozens of multiple-choice questions, including a wide variety of formats. There are simple computation questions, variable manipulation questions, and graphical analysis in various levels of difficulty.
2-0 out of 5 stars Test Prep software vice Tutor
I think that the advertisement is a bit misleading.I found no "tutorials", but only practice tests.Apparantly the tutorial part is the examination mode that allows to you click on a brief explaination of why you either got the question correct or not.If you want to take practice tests, and a get quick explainations, then this is for you.If you want tutorials and/or lessons on the physics topics then you'll waste your money on this.I think the program is very simple to use, however, it's reminiscent of software from the late 80s and early 90s.Don't let the graphics on the box fool you;I expected much more for my $40.

4-0 out of 5 stars it helps ALOT

1-0 out of 5 stars The Few Disks That Work Are Good
As another reviewer noted, if you can find a disk in this package that works, it's a good deal.At least half of them didn't for me--and I tried them on several PCs, with different OSs.There's a help line you can contact, but they told me the problem was with my PCs, not their disks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy a used copy!
These Encore educational sets, though labeled with the latest year in the edition they're trying to sell at any given moment, are really changed very little from one edition to the next - which explains the phenomena of the "extra" drivers needed for XP which an earlier reviewer noted.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good software but I expected more.
I was looking for a piece of software that could help my son better prepare for middle school during the summer. One of the things that I expected was that each 'unit' would have some kind of test or quiz so we could track his progress and this title had very little of that.At this point we are using it as 'guided computer time' and looking for another package that can do a better job of tracking and reporting his progress. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars This is product is not a tutor
I purchased this product after all the wonderful reviews. This product is not a tutor. It ask questions and gives a short explanation of the answer, if you click on 'Explanation'. This product offers no tutoring at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Learning Tool!
I recieved BioTutor Excalibur in my third term of Advanced Biology. I had used ChemTutor in the past and had great success, so my expectations were high. Much to my delight, BioTutor proved to be just as helpful and informative as its predesesor. I used this program for a few weeks before my final exam in conjunction with my class notes and recieved a perfect 100. Between 2nd and 3rd term, I saw 7 percent increase in my term grade. I attribute this to BioTutor almost exclusivly. I will be taking Bio 2 (AP) next year am confident that BioTutor will be of tremendous aide in this elevated level of study.

5-0 out of 5 stars very usefull
As a medical student I found it to be very helpfull with my study

1-0 out of 5 stars not professional at all
For those people who think it doesn't install on Win XP, IT DOES!!! so why don't you all just get some microsoft updates and SP2 and try again. ON THE OTHER HAND, this product is horrible from a "serious student" and "professional" perspective. It does not go into very fine detals of all the organs. For example it only names the major bones, muscles, etc. but if you'd like to know where the muscle attachments are, where the groves, necks, trochanters, and fossi are, then just save up this money and get a much better, hard-cover beautifl anatomy atlas. Human 3d is better, but again, not as detailed as grey's anatomy for example which you can buy for 11.95.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great

3-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Advantage
Gee, I've used the Elementary and Middle School Advantage to suppliment the "Play and Learn" books for home schooling and found it acceptable. The programs can be difficult to load on newer machines but that is not our issue.Compared with what is being taught in public schools in our area, it is nice to have the opportunity to teach/learn Spanish, typing and do spelling in a game form. There are definetly things that could be improved on but as a suppliment its acceptable and usable. I particularly found the Middle School Advantage Reading disc full of books a great asset. The elementary spelling disc could use revamping by having grade graduated lists, common mis-spelled words and words grouped together with common sounds, spellings or letter characteristics.I recommend purchasing the set at the used price of under $10. and use it as a interactive suppliment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
My best advice is to save your money and do more research on other products. The fancy box is misleading as the software is terribly outdated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly Outdated. Misleading coverbox.
I bought this in hopes of helping a 7 yr old improve his spelling and reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works fine on XP
This is an enjoyable game, & educational as well. For the price, it's worth buying. The puzzles aren't difficult, but challenging enough to keep it interesting. The game reminded me of an easier version of Myst. You don't need to have prior knowledge of physics - a handy reference guide is available as part of the gameplay. The only drawback was that the screen was small. Maybe that could have been fixed, but I didn't want to mess with the setup since some games can be finicky on XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars physicus
it is a pretty fun game with a few quirks here and there. Some of them include the anoying "click button" interface, and a few problems that are just a random guess to solve. Other than that, it has very good graphics and a very addictive storyline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational fun if there be such a thing
This is a fantastic Myst clone that, on top of everything, is "gladdened" with a load of physical minutiae which, naturally, lends the game its name. Now I find all matter of educational things to be a compelling incentive to wanting to solve the puzzle. This does not move me to finish the game, however. This, perhaps, is the greatest shortcoming for an adventure game. There is no plot as you know it. Yes, you need to achieve a goal and save the world from a global cataclysm. We've saved the world before, and it has been none too grateful getting into some sticky predicament time and time again. But WHO are you saving? Is it the disembodied voice in the introductory video? This is where the plot begins and ends. There are some marginal hints at a story involving a telescope lens thief, but these are clearly there to facilitate the puzzles. Yet, for a game that makes clear its ambition to create a giant puzzle, Physicus superbly succeeds to render the puzzles built on physical laws maximally enjoyable.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars failure to consider likely purchasers
don't buy this yet.it's harder than heck to install--still trying to get it installed after 3 shots with everything else turned off-- and it has lots of foreign locations for you to designate your home location, but not much good for cities over 100,000 in the US. Want to install in Russia or Kazaksta or Ghana or Egypt or Peru (Talara Peru for example) or Argentina, go right ahead. But, for example, no locations in Indiana US such as Gary, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, so they've left out a lot of people, but you can install in Evora in Portugal and Horsens in Denmark (nothing personal, I just wonder how may purchasers there may be in Evora (55,000) or Horsens (55,000), versus Fort Wayne (220,000)or South Bend (110,000+ 50,000 in next city) or Evansville (120,000).Also, registration of the product is difficult. So US purchasers, be aware that this is not necessarily US-friendly and it is not easy to install, as the US locations seem to be picked sort of at random.I had hoped for better understanding of their likely customer base. Maybe they are looking up into the skies instead of at who might likely buy their stuff.I have purchased earlier versions of this software and was hoping for an improvement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Time for a product recall
Like the previous reviewer, my discs have just failed to install. Haven't the manufacturer's heard of product recalls? There should have been no faulty products remaining on retailers' shelves this Christmas, given that this is a known problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes me happy...
I was an astronomy enthusiast without any tools, until now. This is a great program, runs smoothly, and is as fun and educational as everyone raves. With 700 million light years of space to explore, the point and click option makes any visit possible.I have not made any successful landings with the spaceship mode; that takes a little practice, but I have successfully collided with many deep space objects which has made my flying attempts rewarding all the same. So, I would recommend this program with great enthusiasm.May you have Clear Skies (An astronomer's blessing) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Chemicus
While the game is not one of my favorites it is not bad. You definitely need a guide to play this. (In today's games, who wouldn't?) There is a lot of inventory and it is sometimes cumbersome to perform a task. I would recommend this to anyone who likes science or just for relaxation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Physicus, But...
My wife and I are avid adventure gamers and, to help pass the time until "URU: Ages Beyond Myst" is released later this year, we decided to try "Chemicus". We played "Physicus" a couple years ago and, while we enjoyed it, we both thought that it could have been a much better game if it had tied into Physics a little deeper and if more effort was put into the adventure game design (look for my earlier review).3-0 out of 5 stars Education and confusion come together in Chemicus
Okay, okay, I had fun.But I was also incredibly frustrated by the set up and "logic" (or I should say lack of logic) of this game and that truly detracted from my enjoyment. I wanted to learn something from this game, but I didn't get the connections half the time!Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating AND Disappointing
I too, have installed lots of software but I'm not impressed with this one---firstly, I tried it on Win98se---message: "Redshift 5 has encountered an error & must close". To which it closes & refuses to run at all. Tried it on WinXPsp1. "Redshift 5 has encountered an error & must close".Got a brand new P4 with a 250GB drive & a fresh copy of WinXPsp2. "Redshift 5 has encountered an error & must close".I can run it with the cd & even though I do have my key/activation code, I can download *limited* updates, but only for certain spacecraft--no galaxies or stars. No meteor showers at all. If I take the cd out of my dvd drive & try to run it, "Redshift 5 has encountered an error & must close".Even if I put the cd back in. In fact I have to delete every single entry of it in the registry & Windows or it will not reinstall---which is very irritating when you've customized it because you have to reinstall the entire program again from scratch!!! They have the WORST support site I've ever seen, not a single faq on Redshift at all! The switching back & forth to a pointer & a sky drag cursor rather than having an "adaptive" cursor like StarryNight, is a Drag as well. I was psyched & really looking forward to playing with it when I ordered it but I expected a lot better too. Not good with 2 thumbs DOWN! "Redshift 5 has encountered an error & must close".

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Program
I had no problem installing this on Windows XP.I was impressed with the dvd portion of the software.I had no problems loading it onto my computer and it seems to be working well. Some error messages were in German; however the english version was right behind the German message.I am impressed with every aspect of the program thus far.I installed it on my laptop and it works fine.It has been very useful so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst software I've ever used
This software slowed down my computer and then didn't ever really work correctly.I wound up wiping it off my computer completely and throwing it away.Plus the visuals are not as good nor the interface nearly as intuitive as my old Softkey Bodyworks software.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD SOFTWARE
I was completely disappointed with this software. I am a nursing major and desperately needed visuals to go along with my lectures and labs. This software is 1. the worst ever to load, 2. once loaded crashes the computer3. not very functional as well. I am sorry to say I won't recommend this software to ANYONE.If anyone knows of a good A&P visual software, please post it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best medical references around!
For a title published by SoftKey (now Br0derbund) words fail to describe how well designed the interface is as well as how much information is packed on this disc. This is a reference title which has so much going for it and deserves much more recognition than it received.
5-0 out of 5 stars Med. encyclopedia

3-0 out of 5 stars Just Skip This One and Go On to Chemicus
My wife and I, unfortunately, played the three existing science edutainment titles from Tivola, Physicus, Bioscopia, and Chemicus, out of order from their release sequence. We first played Physicus and enjoyed it but felt that it could have been much better. We then played Chemicus and felt that it truly was a much-improved game over Physicus in nearly every aspect (see my two reviews of these other games). Then we went back and played Bioscopia, which is actually the middle game of the triumvirate. We now wish we hadnt gotten spoiled by jumping to Chemicus first, because Bioscopia is a whole lot more like its predecessor Physicus.5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me and was way cool.
Bioscopia worked on my computer running Windows XP.....I don't know what happened with other people....This game is awesome!Such cool graphics and totally fun to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware Windows 2000 and XP users
I have purchased Tivola software and it will not work on any other operating system then the ones listed. So if you are still running a Microsoft Wintendo OS then go ahead and get it. ... Read more
