Far exceeded my expectations!!!
Ubuntu's latest release (Dapper Drake) has a much smaller memory footprint than Windows and Mac OS, therefore freeing up system resources for other apps. I can run Matlab, Mathematica, Divx/Xvid/AC3 movies, etc. Furthermore, Open Office, which comes bundled with Ubuntu, is perfectly compatible with MS Office and has the added ability to make PDF files. Basically, I can do everything I could with XP, but without XP hogging system resources. An OS should be stable, secure, versatile and efficient. It scores a perfect five in each of these categories. Its a shame people don't realize that they have a choice to Windows/Mac domination. My switch to Linux has been extremely pleasant to the extent that I'm shocked.

I'm not so sure about this version of Ubuntu
I bought the DVD, put it in my DVD drive and booted from it only to discover that the installation attempt failed several times.I found that I had to install via the OEM mode in order to get the installation working.Once I finally did get the installation to begin working, I found that in order to partition my drives (I have 2 of them) I had to know what size a partition was going to be before I knew what directory I was going to allocate to it (sort of how you have to do it with FreeBSD).At the same time, I could not set up Logical Volume Management... I didn't know where to begin!Finally after attempting several times to install, I finally opted for 'preconfigured' installation with preconfigured options in OEM mode.I figured that would at least get it installed so I can try it out.

It sucks!
I decided to try and give Linux a chance. I have a PC running Windows XP, and I decided to install Suse Linux on its place.
A lot of work but worth it
I brought SuSE 10.1 to use while I am on a job in Northern Wisconsin. I had a computer but no operating system. Rather than add to Gate's fortune I ordered 10.1. I have an earlier verison of this OS at home and found it easy to install in an older machine. The same holds true with 10.1. However, if you justt want an OS that works right out of the box this is not the one for you. This is especially true if you are connecting into a wireless router as I have to here.
A great OS for the server room or for the power user desktop
A long time unix fan, I found SuSE 10.1 to be a pleasant surprise. While the Novell Enterprise product, based on the SuSE 10.1 code base, is a bit more polished than SuSE 10.1, it's also more specialized, being divided into a desktop and a server edition. For my money, like SuSE 10.1 because it comes equipped with all the tools and features needed to serve either purpose quite nicely.

StarOffice 8 - no more Microsoft
Sun's open source StarOffice 8 is a fantastic alternative to the MS Office suite of products. Though a bit slower to load initially once you are up and running I find StarOffice every bit as intuitive and easy to use as any other office suite.
Complete and easy-to-use office suite
This program does everything I need from an office suite and much more.I use mostly the word processing and spreadsheet features and they are as easy to use as MS Word and Excel.Earlier StarOffice vesions had some MS Office compatibility problems - mostly with document formating.I have not noticed any problems with compatibility between StarOffice 8 and MS Office, but would be carefull using it if 100% compatibilty was essential to the application.Overall I find StarOffice a far better value than MS Office.

Easy to use Linux operating system - Ubuntu
I have been using XP and Linux off and on for the past few years and up until I tried Ubuntu/Kubuntu I had to reboot almost every time I used the computer in order to do everything that I needed to do.Whether it was ripping a CD, burning CD's, DVD's, playing music, sharing files, writing documents for work or editing a presentation, there was always something that my current version of Linux could not do.I tried slackware, mandrake, red hat, mepix, knoppix and many other mainstream distributions, but none could meet my needs fully.

Reader Rabbit 2nd Grade
A+ rating from my 7 year old boy.He's had other Reader Rabbit software and this one is right up his alley.There are plenty of levels for him to be challenged by and when you initially begin the program it gives the child an "assessment" so they know what level to start him off with.If he gets stuck in one level, he can skip to another part of the game doing something else and come back to what he was doing.It's perfect for a child who is high energy.This program is challenging, not too easy for him, which is good.He sneaks off to his room to play this program, just what he needs as an "educational treat."He loves the music and there's plenty of visual rewards!At any time, I can pull up and see a chart that tells me how far he's completed each task, that's really great.He will play this CD for an hour or more and not because I've asked him to.I've found his confidence level is higher now too, the CD has lots of verbal reinforcement and encouragement.I think the 2nd grade level is very appropriate too, some 2nd grade programs are too easy or hard...this one seems like it has a wide range to accommodate all second graders.I highly recommend this program for all children, especially active boys who love a challenge.BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!

Works with Special Needs Kids
I was amazed that after only about 2 weeks of playing with this, my 2 year old son was actually able to figure out the games.He has severe language difficulties, sensory issues and behavior problems.Usually he could not sit long enough to play a computer game because there was not enough interaction for him.He loves this game and points to the computer all the time to try to tell me he wants to play.He is actually trying to "count" to 5 with the game and "sing" (in his own gibber-jabber language)some of the songs. There is no exact mouse clicking to frustrate him.Anything close works!This is an awesome game for toddlers to feel like the big kids and not be frustrated.

It is quite a stretch to call this 'pre-school'.My 4 year old quickly became bored with it, and the math sequence is interminable and goes on for what seems like forever.

The best Linux distribution ever.
Ubuntu and its variants Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu are simply the best choice for anyone looking for an alternative to Windows. All programs, including an office suite, media players, pdf reader and creator and much more, are automatically installed with the operative system.

The reason why this game deserves 5 stars is for one its not like any other RPG, you'll enjoy up to 40 hours of gameplay and you'll never stop finding things to do in the game.

Unbelievable bugs
As many of the reviewers of this game have mentioned, the story and gameplay of gothic 2 is outstanding. However, the bugs and crashes that occur with this game are as bad as they get. If you have ever played "Temple of Elemental Evil" and screamed at all the hours you wasted when the game crashed, you have a small taste of what you are in for in gothic 2. These are not subtle crashes, either. These are shut-down-your-computer bugs. Worst of all, there is NO english language patch available. I would never consider buying another game from JoWood studios again if this is how they support their products. ... Read more

Arthur and DW are a hit at my house
My seven year old boy enjoys this CD.It has 2 basic tracks, one, you can "play within the story," clicking on parts of the story and see short cause/effect/noises unfold.The "play within the story" is entertaining and a nice break from reading or getting frustrated.The other part to this CD is an actual read along.The read along is nice because as each word is read by a computer voice, it is highlighted.The reading level is simple and read at a slower pace for learning kids.I'm very happy with this CD and think it's a great beginner reader CD or struggling reader CD.I'd buy it again.

a terrific product for little Little Bear fans
We have already tried a number of software products for young children, and I would rank this as one of the very best.The material is true to the children's series, so you see most of the characters from the show (Owl, Cat, Hen, Duck, Father Bear -- though not Emily or Little Bear's grandparents) and Little Bear and Mother Bear's voices seem to be voiced by the same voice actors as those of the television show. You'll Have to beg them to get off the computer!
My son played with this software on the computer at our town library's children's room and I had to beg him to leave the library!We went back a few more times and I finally realized that this software would capture and keep his attention over and over again.He even asked for the software for his 4th Birthday present! Since he loved it, I thought it was great, and the librarians thought it was educational, I purchased it for him.Happy Birthday Tyler!

A great introduction to a variety of music concepts!
Our game arrived last night.For the most part my [...] loved playing it.I thought the variety of musical activities and the story line made the program fun.She takes violin lessons and it reinforced a number of the concepts she had learned.Sir Sour Note is a bit creepy but she didn't seem to mind.
A wonderful program for ALL ages!
Pros:I am a K-5 music teacher at a school district in Texas and have used Jumpstart Music with ALL grade levels with much success.The Kindergartners must have prior instruction with the rhythms before attempting to use this.However, after a few lessons to prepare, they were very successful.I recently allowed by 4th and 5th graders to use it and they were completely happy with it.Even though they saw it only goes to third grade level when first putting your name in the system, they realized pretty quickly that many of the rhythms go beyond 3rd grade level.They were challenged and for many who came from another district and perhaps had no prior music training, it is a great way to get them caught up with the class.

Great deal- fun Busytown times!
I got this for dirt cheap, $4, but it is worth at least 3 times that price. Although I have a Mac, the disc runs fine (in OS 9) and my preschooler loves it. Adorable R. Scarry illustrations and a variety of fun activities.

My Grandson will love it
I know my 2 1/2 year old grandson will love this Christmas present, but it does have some bugs.

We had and older DOS version of this game and discovered it didn't work with Windows XP. This version works great on XP. My daughter has been playing this off and on since she was 2, she's 4 now.

One of my tasks as a parent is to try to instill the type of curiosity in my children that will never be slaked.History, with its awful text books and unavoidable complexity, is one of the toughest subjects for the young.This cd-Rom offers a wonderful way for a child to begin what could become a life-long love:in it, they are able to travel to 8 periods of history, with worlds that they can explore in a way of their choosing.While there is some reading and narration, most of the presentation here is visual and visceral, i.e. you click on things and do them.I think this is fabulous - a picture is worth 1000 words in this case. The History Explorer is a great way to slip a little learning into your child's play time. My 8-yr-old daughter sits and plays this CD for long periods of time, and comes away with new history facts each time. She tracks the Time Fugitive through historical settings and learns about each time period as she gathers clues. Well thought out
We graduated our 4 year old up to this program.Unlike some of the other reviewers, we didnt have any issues with the installation (on XP Professional SP2).
Develops Reading in the Long Run
Our son received this game for Christmas 2002 when he was 3 1/2.We had none of the problems with installation or incorrect sounds described by the other reviewers. Trouble with Windows XP
This old program seems to have trouble with Windows XP. It changes the resolution to something that Windows XP considers "less than optimal". Consequently a mysterious panel keeps popping up offering me the chance to change the resolution. Of course, the panel disappears whenever I hit any key and then reappears about 15 secs later only to disappear again. At this point I'd rather teach my kid to drag her nails over a chalkboard than mess with this anymore. ... Read more

This is a pretty cool game
I like this game I have had it for a while. I stopped playingit but every once in a while I'll go back and play it, it's prettyadictive once you first play it and then after a while it gets old and then you go back and play it and you get addicted to it again. I like the people on how they are all different. The animation is great.The places you go is cool and it's just a neat game. It's very educational too .I recommend it for children 13 and under.

USA all the way!
I received this product as a birthday present. I was really excited to try it, and so I did. Wow! This game is a blast! It is really fun! It teaches you about the USA. It also teaches you about being a detective and solving riddles. It also teaches you about spending your time wisely because as youtravel around the USA, you use up fuel for your airplane. Really interesting and educational!
I received this product as a birthday present. And I was veryexcited when I got it. I tried it right away. It was so fun! I thinkyou should buy it right away! It was very educational and challenging. This is more about what you do (I'll try not to give it all away). So, you are a detective.The Chief (like on the TV show) assigns a mission. Some person who works for Carmen Sandiego has stolen something and you are trying to catch the crook! You "fly" to the place where the thing was stolen and people pass by. You can click on them to ask questions about the crook. As you go along, you record some of the information about what the crook looks like and fill out a "warrant." You also ask the people about where the crook went and track the crook down. You can learn a lot about the United States from the clues that the people give you (like I did). You keep tracking the crook until you get to the place where the crook is. It's hard, too, because you lose fuel every time you fly to a place tracking the crook. When you are there, you look at the info you collected about what the crook looks like, and you try to catch them. The whole game is fun! You should buy it! ... Read more

amazing tool for elementary school kids
you can never stop learning and school is not the only place you can learn. This is perfect for giving to your kids to play after school while you make dinner or something. Much better than sitting in front of the television or playing video games. This one is an EDUCATIONAL video game that teach skills in academic and core subjects in a fun, presentable, age appropriate manner. My sister had all the cluefinders, magic school bus and all the games like that and she's now the top student in her grade and is in a gifted students program. These type of games can really bring out the best in children by providing recreation, education and even brain teasers that challenge them in a friendly manner. Highly recommended

The Clue to Making Learning Fun
I purchased Cluefindes 3rd Grade Adventures about 6 weeks ago, and since have watched my child use it to completion. She has played it 4 times and will probably play it again in the future. In the meantime, she has moved onto the 4th grade game. Great teaching game
We are a homeschooling family.I bought this game along with the fourth grade and fifth grade versions for my nine year old.She sailed through the other two, but found this one challenging.It is great for reinforcing math, introduces chemistry, addresses the pollution problem, history, spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension.There is a level selection area in which you can choose how hard or easy the game is, but this is also handy for letting parents know where your child may need some help in or where they excel.It has a practice mode where the child can just do the activities without having to play the game.I found this great for reinforcing some of those areas my daughter needed more help in.Read more
