1-0 out of 5 stars It sucks!
I decided to try and give Linux a chance. I have a PC running Windows XP, and I decided to install Suse Linux on its place.
3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of work but worth it
I brought SuSE 10.1 to use while I am on a job in Northern Wisconsin. I had a computer but no operating system. Rather than add to Gate's fortune I ordered 10.1. I have an earlier verison of this OS at home and found it easy to install in an older machine. The same holds true with 10.1. However, if you justt want an OS that works right out of the box this is not the one for you. This is especially true if you are connecting into a wireless router as I have to here.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great OS for the server room or for the power user desktop
A long time unix fan, I found SuSE 10.1 to be a pleasant surprise. While the Novell Enterprise product, based on the SuSE 10.1 code base, is a bit more polished than SuSE 10.1, it's also more specialized, being divided into a desktop and a server edition. For my money, like SuSE 10.1 because it comes equipped with all the tools and features needed to serve either purpose quite nicely.

    5-0 out of 5 stars u decide
Can it run linux commands? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: yes
5-0 out of 5 stars To address those issues
    1. All Linux packages should be able to close X to reveal a CLI. However Slackware uses a CLI for nearly everything it does. SuSE has lots of windows type GUI for nearly everything it does. Linux users never really end up learning Linux with SuSE.
5-0 out of 5 stars slackware?
    1. Slackware doesnt have a graphical interface that can be turned on & off at will. Suse does.

5-0 out of 5 stars SuSE is Great!
I recently made the switch ove5r to Linux, and I have to say, after trying other distributions Ihave fallen in love w/ SuSE !!Very comfortable operating system once you get by the wind0ze stigmatism! It gives you you're office, multimedia, and graphicspackages as well as games for those who enjoy gaming.I highly recommend it, just have patience and you'll be amazed at what Linux (GNU) has to offer!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Very good but frustrating at first.
This is a very complete operating system with a large library of free software.I had no trouble installing it (setup detected all my hardware on an IBM Thinkpad A20m), but was very frustrated at first with the interface. The documentation is difficult to read, and this is not for beginners.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After 4 days talking to their support group, it is finally known to me that they do NOT support 32-bit Seriel ATA Hard Drives. So I have wasted 4 evenings and countless phone calls with these guys before they figured that they don't support me, which is a fairly common hardware config now days. So beware!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Product activation
Users must activate this product with Xandros support in order to unlock some of the functionality of the product and receive critical product and security updates.Without product activation, users will not receive access to such updates.Should the user activate beyond a certain number of installations, they will be denied new activation codes until they have contacted Xandros support and explained themselves.Support may or may not then grant further activation codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Windows Alternative
After using (and abusing) Xandros v3.02 for over a year and watching Windows try to plug their "security flaws" for eons before that, I decided to do the upgrade to Xandros Home Edition.

I've been using Xandros since the 2.01 Open Circulation Edition days from way back in 2004. I really started getting into Xandros once I acquired a copy of Xandros 3.0 Deluxe Edition (check out my review of that product).

5-0 out of 5 stars Linspire 5.0 Is the Best OS Out there! No Vista for me!
Right from the download to the install this OS did everything right! I too have tried diffrent OS's BeOS, Linux Mandrake, Linux Suse Pro 9.3, Linux Red Hat, OS-2, Windows 95,98,ME, & Dos, take your pick! I have found this Linux Linspire to be the best of them all! Its the first version of Linux to see all of my hardware during setup. It's fast And yes it is simple to use! That's the idea behind this version of Linux, is to make it easy for windows user's to move over to Linux. I am sure a lot of Linux power user's would disagree about it being the best, but not everyone wants to play around with the operating system it self. But would rather get some work done, and on a stable system. And as for cost, yes you do pay a litte more with Linspire, for some software than other versions of Luinux, but it's still vastly cheeper than MS Windows software and you still can get free software. If you need a stable version of Linux and you're feedup with Windows and all its crashes, then Linspire is the OS for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great distro for AOL types
This is probably one of the worst distros available based on the Linux OS kernel. Many of the features, icons, etc. are very 'kid-like' and over-simplified. Not to mention that this distribution has some major issues with graphic drivers. After installation of this software, there is persistent emphasis to join the 'Click-N-Run' community, which is full of a lot of applications which are largely useless. Most of the productive software apps available for Linux are available totally for free on the internet. If you're nothing more than a glorified AOL user, and want something overly simplistic and kid-like, than Linspire might be a great choice. Maybe it's just me but I have a tough time with a company which claims that their software is a perfect alternative to Windows, but absolutely does not support any 'dual-boot' scenarios. Many users of Linux are forced to use both, due to some software which has no Linux functionality whatsoever. Pitching a product as a great alternative and then offering no support is a contradiction. For a more serious user, try SuSE 10.0. It's installation is very well done, their dual-boot works very well, and the documentation provided is excellent. You do not need to buy this product which gives you almost zero support and NO documentation. What exactly are you paying for anyway with Linspire?

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best version of Linux
Linspire 5.0 is a moderately decent OS.There are some problems with sound that needs to be fixed (mainly when you use Lsongs) It seems a lot of people have had these issues. It is easy to install and CNR makes it easy to find applications.I suggest trying Suse 10.0.It has fewer bugs, just a little more time consuming to install to hard drive. you can buy the retail version with manual and tech support for new users, or download it for free at opensuse.org.I would rank Suse 10.0 over Linspire or Windows ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Linspire? Use Ubuntu instead.
Linspire takes a free (as in beer and as in speech) Linux distribution known as Debian, and then charges for the "service" of downloading software from a repository that is about 1/7th the size of the Debian repositories. If you wish ease of use, and adhere to the Debian ideal, get yourself a free-of-charge copy of Ubuntu courtesy of http://shipit.ubuntu.com, and then access the Ubuntu and Debian archives WITHOUT having to subscribe to anything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do not but this product from Amazon or anyone else except Linspire!
The product is great and loads in about 20 min. (except for the CNR activation). It is simpler to use than the latest versions of Windows.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars because it has bash, the rest I don't like
As far as linux goes I would not recommend this distro.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well hey....It's cheaper than Windows.
I'm giving this 4 stars for a couple of reasons.
1-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to work with and no support.
First off, this is NOT Windows, you cannot click on
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Windows to Linux Migration Distro but ...
I concur with the reviewers who have found Xandros an easy and robust Linux distro, particularly, if you are coming from the Windows environment and don't want to spend too much time getting to know Linux in all its gory details.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great OS for beginners and power users
I have been using Redhat Linux for several years, and then switched to Xandros a month ago. What I can say is that this is the first time I could make Linux my main OS (my disk is partitioned into Linux/Windows) and use it as default bootup option. It almost runs everything I need and I rarely need to switch back to Windows.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice distro for beginners, but you may want more
Xandros Desktop OS is simply one of the best alternatives to Windows you will ever find. I have used Xandros since the Xandros 2.0 days back in 2004 and have watched it evolve into what it is today : a seriously-viable alternative to Windows.
2-0 out of 5 stars Stable & fast but not there yet
I'm one of those that want to get away from "anything Microsoft" and after reading about all the Linux distros bought the Xandros version.

4-0 out of 5 stars LINSPIRE
This book is fairly easy to use but it does get somewhat complicated at times, especially if you have never used Linux before. It does look somewhat like windows though and for that I am thankful or I believe I would be totally lost!
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Experience
I first tried Linspire 5-O when there was a free promotional offer for it.Running it live seemed good, so I decided to install it on a brand new hard disk.Big mistake. After using it for about an hour, I found OpenOffice to be very lacking, as the version it was distributed with was FAR behind the latest. The only way that upgrading it to the latest version that was mentioned was by signing up to their Click N' Run program, which costs money.I had sound problems as well.It messed up the master boot record so I can no longer boot into windows, which I needed in order to do work (using the LATEST OpenOffice). This took a couple of months for me to fix using tutorials (and I have been using computers for over a decade now) and attempts to get support. Now, using Ubuntu (which is completely free), I have had none of these problems and everything is working perfectly. If you want a good Linux distribution that will not cause you headaches, I reccomend not using Linspire, and one of the more mature distributions instead.

    5-0 out of 5 stars ! ! ! SuSE fanatic ! ! !
While back I was having lots of trouble with My win2k pro especally when I rebuilt My systems to 64 bit.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good distro, but one major concern...
After using suse 9.1 for a while I have come to the conclusion that it is an excellent distro. But... beware the USB hotplugging functionality. It is virtually broken in 9.1. If you have or are using 9.0 where just about everything worked, and want to have easy USB key functionality, it is my recommendation that you don't even bother getting 9.1 and just wait until 9.2 or the Novell desktop hits the streets. I have tons of USB devices in the form of flash keys and a USB multi-media reader and I was appalled to find that they wouldn't work automatically. Suse appears to be ignoring the many unsatisfied users' cries for a resolution to this travesty as this kind of situation isn't covered in the 90-day or so installation support and they will just ignore your requests or just straight tell you "sorry, we can't help you." Frustrating, as everything (especially this) seemed to just work fine in SuSE 9.0. Countless forum trips and lengthy post after another from many knowledgeable fellow Suse users have not been able to cure it. The only way is to disable supermount and manually stick entries into the /etc/fstab file and hope your devices mount to the directories you specify. A big headache for those that want to just plug in their keys and go.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good one
I tried the live CD version to see if any hardware problems I would have. Only the sound card was an issue. The manufacturer only had a driver for RH 7.3. No problem got it mostly for the server functions and it is going on a spare PC.It has more packages than you can count.

    Editorial Review

Nicely polished and with an improved file system, Red Hat Linux 7.2 is the best release to date of the most popular commercial Linux distribution. If you tried an earlier version of Red Hat Linux and found it too rough for you, particularly at installation time, you'll want to give it another try now. This particular version of Red Hat Linux 7.2 is the plain vanilla edition (as opposed to the more capable Professional edition and the various server products), and is best suited for use on a workstation or as a LAN server on a small network. On the other hand, since the kernel is the same as that of the more costly versions, you can install this product and add the capabilities you need by installing additional software downloaded from the Internet.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I did another review, thought I was reviewing a book not OS
7.2 is a great improvement over the previous. As I write this review, Red Hat Linux is up to version 9.I didn't discover any problems with this version, and the updates and patches available with up2date just keep comming, even though I hadn't discovered the problems that were fixed.3-0 out of 5 stars I was a bit disappointed
I am not a linux guru. I installed Red Hat Linux on one of my machines to learn linux and purchased this book to help me along the way. It appears to cover everything that it needs to, but I found the detail explinations of how to do things to be greatly lacking and on a few occasions to be wrong. I spent a lot of time trying to set things up in linux using this book as a guide, and they just plain didn't work in a great many cases. Either it is incorrect in places, or it is incomplete.4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing potential
Linux is what people wanted out of Windows... that being stability. Read more

Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal breaks with earlier Red Hat (and all other) Linux releases with the unification of the Gnome and KDE desktops. In effect, Red Hat has made the two almost indistinguishable in a production environment.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but a few bugs...
I personaly really like this product but there are a few set backs. For one: The GUI for iptables has a bug that makes it think your firewall settings are slways high (it does update the file though so its not that big of a problem.) But there are pluses to... Remember the MS blue screens of death? I have never seen RedHat fail! It comes with alot of stuff like office apps, tux racer and countless other games, a lot of text editers, and much other stuff. If you want a cheap desktop envirement thats useful you might like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can use Linux at last!
I've bought Linux in the past and struggled with it and eventually removed it. Either it wasn't compatible with my hardware or was too difficult to use.4-0 out of 5 stars Getting to know Linux
I've been using Linux for about six months now. Red Hat 8.0 works well with my home LAN & Macintosh PPCs. The earlier versions 7.1, 7.3 used to be challenging especially undoing my WindowZ mentality. I like the way that RH8.0 smoothly configures on my Ethernet LAN. I intend to use Linux exclusively after test driving it for a few months. I don't need to reboot on every system change, only once an a while I would even have to logout. My system is dual OS'd with Windows 2000 Pro. and Grub startup. When or if I need to upgrade to RH9.0 I won't hesitate. I finally bought a Red Hat manual so you know that I've been winging it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mandrake is the best distro for the Masses
Linux Mandrake is simply the easiest and best desktop linux solution that anyone can use.Mandrake provides cutting edge software and excellent support and community options.I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Piece of cake!
As a long-time Red Hat user, I have to admit that Mandrake packs a strong punch. The installation process is the best I've seen: so easy to navigate and choose options, very predictable and generally humane. The default configuration is good. Gotta love those goofy penguin icons!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mandrake 8.1, Good News, Bad News
I bought M8.1 because of all the reviews I read, this was supposed to be the easiest to install and it is.Remember that.Read more
