Mr./Ms. BM_NINADAsaid that StarOffice hoggs memory.
5-0 out of 5 stars One difference of note between OO and StarOffice
I suspect there are other minor differences not mentioned here or below, but I wanted to mention one difference for Japanese Speakers using OO or StarOffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars u decide
Can it run linux commands? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: yes
5-0 out of 5 stars To address those issues
1. All Linux packages should be able to close X to reveal a CLI. However Slackware uses a CLI for nearly everything it does. SuSE has lots of windows type GUI for nearly everything it does. Linux users never really end up learning Linux with SuSE.
5-0 out of 5 stars slackware?
1. Slackware doesnt have a graphical interface that can be turned on & off at will. Suse does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Linspire? Use Ubuntu instead.
Linspire takes a free (as in beer and as in speech) Linux distribution known as Debian, and then charges for the "service" of downloading software from a repository that is about 1/7th the size of the Debian repositories. If you wish ease of use, and adhere to the Debian ideal, get yourself a free-of-charge copy of Ubuntu courtesy of http://shipit.ubuntu.com, and then access the Ubuntu and Debian archives WITHOUT having to subscribe to anything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do not but this product from Amazon or anyone else except Linspire!
The product is great and loads in about 20 min. (except for the CNR activation). It is simpler to use than the latest versions of Windows.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars because it has bash, the rest I don't like
As far as linux goes I would not recommend this distro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome alternative to MS Office
Using the program is very simple, and all programs in Star Office can be saved in MS Office formats.A awesome alternative to MS Office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far more than just an office suite.
StarOffice 5.2 has most all the office component capabilities one needs; spreadsheet, word processor, database, draw program, visual basic and macros, etc. However, with OpenOffice.org developer support, this core "office suite" is only a starting point for many possible applications. Applications interfaces such as "point of sale" or "scientific instrumentation" can be built on this office component core. StarOffice 5.2 is, in effect, a visual component library that works on many operating system and hardware platforms. This puts StarOffice in a class by itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars HELP!
I am not a dummy, but I think that I need StarOffice 5.2 for Dummies also.As one of the others has stated.I have had nothing but problems getting this thing installed and finally gave up!It is just a big mess! And now I cannot get it to completely uninstall and it is causing a lot of complications with my system?I cannot understand what is going on here.I have tried everything! It seems it isn't installed completely, so I can't actually use it, but I can't uninstall anything more than I already have and my systems still says it is there and it is reaking havoc on my system!I am glad to see that there a few other people out there that seems to be having the same problem that I have.I thought I was losing my mind for a while there.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars LINSPIRE
This book is fairly easy to use but it does get somewhat complicated at times, especially if you have never used Linux before. It does look somewhat like windows though and for that I am thankful or I believe I would be totally lost!
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Experience
I first tried Linspire 5-O when there was a free promotional offer for it.Running it live seemed good, so I decided to install it on a brand new hard disk.Big mistake. After using it for about an hour, I found OpenOffice to be very lacking, as the version it was distributed with was FAR behind the latest. The only way that upgrading it to the latest version that was mentioned was by signing up to their Click N' Run program, which costs money.I had sound problems as well.It messed up the master boot record so I can no longer boot into windows, which I needed in order to do work (using the LATEST OpenOffice). This took a couple of months for me to fix using tutorials (and I have been using computers for over a decade now) and attempts to get support. Now, using Ubuntu (which is completely free), I have had none of these problems and everything is working perfectly. If you want a good Linux distribution that will not cause you headaches, I reccomend not using Linspire, and one of the more mature distributions instead.

Editorial Review

The StarOffice integrated suite has been quietly growing in popularity since Sun Microsystems bought Star Division, its original German authors, a few years back. The latest version, StarOffice 6, is now one of the best software bargains in the western world. The single CD in the StarOffice box installs on Windows, Solaris, and Unix/Linux. Also in there is a good, fat manual, which goes a long way toward explaining StarOffice functions. Each StarOffice 6 program launches in a standalone window; gone is the StarOffice Desktop, a separate, Works-like interface on which earlier versions used to run.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For cheap computer users only
There are some people that would rather save money than anything else. My friend John would love this software so I plan to send it to him. He doesn't want to spend money so bad he would endure something like this software. I tried it just to see if it could offer any competition to the overpriced Microsoft Office Suites. It can't begin to challenge MS Office or Corel WordPerfect Office. The reasons are as follows:
5-0 out of 5 stars staroffice rocks but there are some issues
Everything works great with staroffice and openoffice software.Opening and saving MS documents is a breeze as long there are not VB/VB script controls associated with them (most of my documents don't).I have this installed on Redhat linux 9.0 and Win98.I am glad that they got rid of Staroffice desktop manager. For a product at this price the features are great but I will continue to spend more money on MS products for the following reasons.1-0 out of 5 stars Just use MS Office and be done
The functionality of this software product leaves a lot to be desired. You can purchase MS Office and have the complete package and be very pleased.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very intuitive
Setting up online banking is impossible! I don't know how Moneydance has gotten so many good reviews... the software is soo confusing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice accounting system, refreshing
This programs is easy to work with, is pretty easy to learn and is super reliable. As a recovering Quicken user, it did take some getting used to and a little bit of fiddling, but I moved right through the steps to a full recovery.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best finance package for Mac
I have been using Quicken for Mac for years. Unfortunately it has actually been getting worse (more bugs, more anoying features I can't turn off) for the last few years. To add insult to injury Quicken will not support older versions and forces you to upgrade to the crappy new version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Live CD looks pretty good
I downloaded the live CD and ran it on three different machines, all with good results. The defaults in Santa Fe Linux makes for an attractive desktop and most of the applications appear to be quite good and useful. However, unlike SimplyMEPIS the live CD is just that and it does not have an installation routine -- you have to purchase the full version.I was sufficiently impressed by what I saw that I am entertaining spending the money. That event is contingent upon the answers to a couple of questions that I have posed to Santa Fe Software about SMP for my dual-Athlon rig.Overall, this distribution looks promising to me, a Linux user for better than ten years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Something is wrong with last review
I was just on the site and you can download a Live CD, But I understand it cant install. So how were or why were you trying?
1-0 out of 5 stars Suggest Other Distributions
The main "reason" that you are supposed to want Santa Fe Linux over other distributions is that it is supposed to "just work". On three different machines, I was unable to get the product to even install. On the fourth I could get it to install, but it didn't work with my printer or my wireless network card.

4-0 out of 5 stars replaced RedHat with SUSE - not looking back!
I had been using RedHat 6.0 up through 7.3 on my laptop (first a ThinkPad 770X, then a Sony VAIO).However, the RH distribution just isn't well suited for a laptop install -- incomplete support of Sony-specific features such as the "jogdial" and FN-keys.1-0 out of 5 stars Think TWICE Before you purchase SuSE Office Desktop!!
Having researched Linux products for over a year, we decided to give SuSE Office Desktop a spin recently when one of MS's Windows "security updates" completely hosed our PC. Note that the Microsoft automated CRITICAL security download stated that all went fine and rebooted our PC into HELL ! Lost dial-up, scrambled app software, and a bunch of other crap... typical everyday experience with Windoze !!!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disapointed in this one...
SuSE 9.1 pro was very nice which prompted Me to check out SuSE 9.3 pro.
2-0 out of 5 stars Promising product marred by poor hardware support
During installation my mouse was not detected, never had that problem with XP.Detected my modem but did not work, never had that problem with XP.Never detected my scanner, never had that problem with XP.After installation screen went dark, flickered, then locked up, never had that problem with XP.Yes Novell offers lots of support but good luck finding an answer on their "busy" web page.Of course there are plenty of user sites if you want to engage in command line text anarchy. If you like spending your time tweaking an OS so it plays nice this is the OS for you.If you need something that works out of the box stay with XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars XP 2 + SUSE removable hard drive = ideal for learning *NIX
I say that the end of 2004, start of 2005 was the time to get a pimpin' new PC. I booted SuSE 7.2 on a partition with Windows 2000 many years ago and the result was not funny. If you choose to dual-boot a Windows Linux machine, then get two hard drives for it. Take a hint. XP2 should be on one of the hard drives. Better yet get a docking bay installed on your PC, like a ViPower Super Rack IDE for hard drives so you can pull them out and swap them around. As a Windows user this is how you want to try out Linux on your machine... and you should, but read more to find out why.
