3-0 out of 5 stars Decent product, but poor customer service
I bought my copy of Toast 7 late last year. Before using it for the first time, I registered the thing and downloaded the 7.0.2 update. I then set about using the DVD music disc feature to make a disc of Xmas music.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ordered wrong item
I wanted to order the latest Mac version of iLife. Upon receiving your Email solicitation, I automaticaqlly selected the first iLife item that appeared on Amazon's page. Unfortunately, it was for iLife '05, rather than iLife '06.Since I already had iLife'05, I had to send it back and reorder iLife '06. To Amazon, I recommend you feature the latest version of the product and list the discounted older version thereafter. To us Buyers, i've learned to be more aware and detailed in my ordering. It saves everyone a lot of pain and suffering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Toast with Jam
Have only started to use it but so far... I have had problems and will now have to consult their manual to see if its fixable... Operating the program intuitively and from experience from past versions, I was disappointed to see the first CD I burned which should have contained about 18 songs did NOT record several tracks.. could be my fault but I didn't do anything differently to the tracks which did record as opposed to the tracks that didn't record but did take up space on the burned CD.. back to the drawing board..

1-0 out of 5 stars NO Customer Support and Required Registration
I bought the product from Amazon. After installing this product, I tried to install the updates only to find out that I have to register the product in order to install their bug fixes. So after typing in their long registration code, it wouldn't accept it because it said it was for Toast and not for Toast with Jam.The box had not code for Toast with Jam, only one for Toast and one for Jam.There is no technical support. No apparent way to e-mail them for technical support. If there is a way, they have hidden it very well.
4-0 out of 5 stars The DVD Music Album alone is worth the high price...
The DVD Music Album feature has allowed me to start consolidating all of my live recordings onto DVDs.I've burned two so far, one with 8 CDs and one with about a dozen or so CDs.The only reason I did not give the full five stars is that I've had two DVDs "coastered" during a failed burn. When it comes to burning audio, TwJ is far superior to iTunes. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed
When I received my iBook 12", I was extremely excited to bust out the iLife applications. I had heard a lot about them, and played around with them at Apple Retail Stores.
3-0 out of 5 stars Garageband NOT unique to Apple.
Just to counter what one person said about "nothing comes close" on the PC. Garageband is simply Apple's version of Sonic Foundry's ACID, now owned by Sony, and you can download [...]
4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but better than anything else
I have been a Mac User for almost 20 years and I have to say that this package is one of Apple's greatest achievements. To take so many different components (the one thing in common is the digital footprint of all the media involved) and make them work together so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful upgrade from iMovie
At first blush, Final Cut Express 2 (FCE2) looks very intimidating. The interface is much different from iMovie. I looked around and discovered that everyone recommend the book "Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop" by Tom Wolsky ISBN:1578202566. The book helped understand the interface and the power locked into FCE2. I have easily created several projects that couldn't have been done in iMovie and I did them quicker in FCE2.
1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
Don't you hate yourself when you buy something when you know you shouldn't? I was persuaded by someone to buy Final Cut Express and an iMac computer. I had already purshased and learned to use Sony Screenblaster video software on my PC, without much trouble, but I was persuaded I had to goApple and Final Cut if I was going to be serious about making videos. The Final Cut Express that came with my iMac last June (2004) had a bug that I did not learn about until after months of working on a project. The bug causes the sound to get more and more unsynchronized the longer you work on it. Apple knew about this bug as early aslast Feb. when they released a patch. I found out about the bug on my own, the hard way. The patch will not correct work already done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as FC HD and better than iMovie
I've actually downgraded from Final Cut HD because when I bought that software it didn't work with my computer and then Apple couldn't fix so I was out $300. I needed to buy another software package but didn't want to spend another $300 so I went with FC Express. Because I'm a student it only cost me $99. To tell you the truth it's not that much different than the full version of FC. Most people that use FC are doing features which I'm not doing, and other people use it for the title generator and sound editing. I have other softwares for that.
5-0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY loving it (but am prepared for learning curve).
I had read a lot of reviews (here and elsewhere) warning of Final Cut's massive learning curve, and I do believe that helped soften the blow when I first tried this program. Because there definitely is a learning curve--this is far more complex than iMovie. But, the good news is, it's not beyond the newbie's reach!
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without Final Cut Express HD
Final Cut Express HD is awesome. But don't try to learn how to use FCE on your own - buy a book such as Final Cut Express for Dummies and spend some time working through the concepts. I had previously used Adobe Premiere, so making the switch to FCE was not quite the hurdle that is going to be for others. If you make the jump from iMovie, do realize you will need to spend a lot of time learning how to use FCE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile upgrade; make sure you haven't outgrown it
This is a worthwhile upgrade, especially for owners of FCE 1.x...there is not that much new here for users who own FCE 2.x, except for the HD video capabilities. I have started wondering whether I'm ready to use the features found in the "Pro" version -- and a little annoyed that some of the features in Express seem to be crippled merely to distinguish between FCE and FCPro. (A good example is being able to save a custom column layout in the Browser -- you can do it in Pro, and USED to be able to do it in FCE, but not any more!) I also want exportable/importable Edit Decision Lists (EDLs); most of the third party apps that work with Final Cut depend on reading and writing these XML-based lists to do their job. The best you can do with FCE and a third party logging product is produce a printed or on-screen EDL from the third-party product that you then use as a guide in FCE for editing. BUT, those are quibbles, and to be expected from a stripped-down version of a high end product. Overall, FCE delivers the goods, and provides a degree of control over projects that will be a revelation to iMovie owners patient enough to follow the learning curve.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable upgrade to FCE2
FCE/HD bringing Soundtrack and LiveType to the hobbyist is one of the more generous steps Apple has taken since they brought us FCE1. This is a very big and very useful addition to FCE allowing us to sync audio/music and titles much cleaner to our videos than we could before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Video Editing
Reviewing a program like Media Edit Pro is a tough slog. Not because of any shortcomings of the program but because it was completely different from what I expected. Perhaps a brief description of the review process is in order. What I review is stuff that interests me, and I'm interested in Movies. So when I saw a press release for Media Edit Pro I thought "Hey, Here's a movie editor more robust than iMovie but cheaper than Final Cut Express, that's something I'd like to try." A couple of e-mails later and I had a copy. I installed Media Edit Pro (which is growing tiresome to type so I'll truncate the title to MEP in future references) with no problems. then I downloaded and installed the update. Still a problem free experience. Found some footage to play with and fired up the program to give MEP it's first test run. Big Problem.5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use! Nothing I've ever seen
This software is the greatest. I can edit frame by frame or edit entire movies. I love the paint on movie feature--great for rotoscoping! Like I said before, it is nothing I've seen before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally updated -- addendum to my previous review
Okay, Apple finally updated FCE, and after downloading the patch, FCE now will do what it is supposed to do without crashing.A few of the controls still are not quite up to the "pro" standard -- which is mildly annoying, given that the promotion for the software was that it was "just like Final Cut Pro except that you are limited to DV editing."However, it is now more than adequate for even advanced amateurs and its compositing and slow-motion capability are outstanding.99% of users will never push it as far as I do, and I recently did an 8-layer composite with greenscreen, three layers of pyro effects, filters and motion on every layer and slow-motion applied.Came out great and didn't crash once.I only wish they had updated it earlier.

2-0 out of 5 stars I had real problems
Okay, maybe I'm pushing the limits of Final Cut Express doing 5-layer composites, but I routinely crash the program so badly on my 800mhz iMac that the program actually won't boot again until I throw away the User Preferences file.It also crashes if I try to adjust "Brightness and Contrast" and export the file as an AVI.Be warned -- it's better than iMovie but it does NOT have all the features of Final Cut Pro -- not even close. The motion commands are crippled and the software itself has yet to be updated, which indicates that Apple isn't making this a priority.I've tested FCP and found it has none of these problems, so I expect I'll have to upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro into pro editing...
Believe it or not I purchased FCP 3.0 a year ago as well as several books and cdRom based tutorials, but never really caught on to Apple's way of editing. The migration I made over from PC based Media Studio pro and Rex Edit proved difficult for me. That said I recently purchased a new PowerBook and took advantage of a $99 promotional buy of FCE. With nothing to lose I have found the intro to Fianl Cut Pro within Final Cut Express very encouraging. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hope they work out the bugs in the next version
On the plus side, the program is easy to use; kids will love it. On the negative side, I have compatibility problems. It worked on my first webcam, but not my new one. There is a Visual Communicator software update, but it did not fix my problem. The best technical support could do was suggest I update my video card driver, which had no effect.I never could get it to work on a laptop, it continually crashes.I did install it on another computer, which works better, but the video is still out of synch with the audio.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you aren't Copalla, you may be in over your head
Although this program has an astounding number of features, it also has an astoundingly high learning curve. Unless you are planning on shooting an actuall short or full length film, it is too much software. It is definitely not for the amature weekend videographer, and is best left for the pros. I use it only because my job requires it (courtroom tech support). Final Cut Express is somewhere between iMovie and FCP, and one fourth of the cost. Check out the reviews for that product. It is far less hassle and has almost as many features and capabilities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for people with unlimited budgets who like Macs
Widely recognized as one of the best professional video editing programs currently available, but at [$$$] for the software and several thousand for the Mac-only hardware required to run it to full potential it's not even an option for most computer users. Meanwhile, there is an increasingly dizzying array of powerful and affordable editing solutions available for Windows-based PCs, so unless you already have a Mac it would make sense to investigate those options before considering FCP. For example, check out the latest offerings from Ulead, Vegas Video, Pinnacle, Matrox, Avid and Canopus before concluding that FCP is the only game in town. Personally I use the Canopus DVStorm2 and have found it to be an amazing tool; I had a chance to play with FCP and didn't see a compelling reason to switch. ... Read more
