5-0 out of 5 stars Smart French works!
Smart French is a unique program that carefully introduces the learner to the way the language is really spoken by native speakers.I've used many instructional materials, texts, cd roms, tapes, videos, and have taken classes as well as worked with a private tutor for a year.Smart French is one of the best programs I've used, particularly in the way it structures the lessons and its use of highlighted text that shows what is and is not pronounced in French conversation. It has helped a lot with listening comprehension. I'm also pleased that my pronunciation, fluency, and accent have improved. I have a long way to go, but this program has made a difference.I recommend Smart French highly as a very effective way to increase confidence and ease with the language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Father's Language Lab
If you are serious about understanding spoken French, and learning to speak it yourself, then you owe it to yourself to pick up Smart French. Each lesson is broken down into logical steps that enable you to progress rapidly. It still takes discipline and motivation, and a good book on grammar is highly recommended, but of all the ways I have attempted to learn and to teach myself french, this is far and away the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars The right approach learning French
I am a French native and I am very very very familiar with SmartFrench. I am a French teacher myself and this product is the best. You won't be bored with endless old fashion text and audio which will put you to sleep. This interactive product will keep you interested and fresh.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wordsmith Utility Tool
"Word Menu 2.2" is an amazing and fun program to use. It allows even the smartest of writers to express themselves with more accuracy, fluidity, and creativeness -- it makes one's writing look more intelligent. "Word Menu's" interface is actually fun to use and simple to maneuver around while looking for that perfect word. Every writer or wordsmith should own a copy of this invaluable program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated product
Word Menu 2.2 offers quickly accessible words, however the defintions are vague and indirect. Many words you would expect to find are missing, and frankly this is a program that would be most useful for people learning the english language, seeking to understand genres which certain words pertain to. It is my opinion that most english speakers already have a strong grasp on most of these words and subjects they entail; buying this for any trivial benefit of searching words by subjects, is foolhardy. It's not worth 30 dollars, I wish I would not have purchased it and do not reccomend it. If the price was 15 dollars or less, I would suggest "hey why not". $30 is an unreasonable price for this simplistic vocabulary lexicon and is more wisely spent on something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, needing attention to basic details.
This is a very comprehensive resource of categorised words and their meanings, which is easily navigated and understood. Loaded onto a laptop, one has a lot of power easily to hand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage
The cookbook is fantastic! The CD-ROM (version 2.0) is an unmitigated disaster. It will NOT run on your computer unless you tweak its innards to the point where other programs rebel.I tried for ten minutes and then unistalled it.I will stick with the book but the software is dismal.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not user friendly
This software has a very cumbersome user interface - it's hard to navigate, searches are cumbersome, and the window is small and can't be resized.I once stumbled across an entry about homemade mayonnaise, but have been unable to find it since, because it's so difficult to navigate.1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE!
This software is mislabeled and does not run on a modern computer. The only way you can get it to run is to cripple your computer by turning down virtual memory to a level that will cause other applications like Microsoft Office to crash!Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Regretted buying
Dificient contents as a paid computer based material. I was expecting this MWCD would be more full coverage dictionary rather than a thinny handdy reference. Lacking examples and ediums, it only offers short definitions of words which is not eye-catchingly displayed though by the way. Relatively easy install and access, yes I agree on that. But it did bump with my Windows ME and word 2000 several times and I needed to boot-up again once in a while. Slow pop up was another pain. You may want the definition boxs to come up in 2 seconds when you have COMPUTER DICTIONARY INSTALLED, not ten seconds chewing your finger and listening your hard drive deadly spinning. I also felt crooked that thereare many free on-line dictionaries with comparable quality(actually I feel them better) including pronounceation. One virtue of this MWCD is it plays on and with word processing software. With a few mouse clickings, you can consult and find right on working paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality and easy to use
The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus computer program (on CD) is an excellent value. This program is very useful for anyone who types a lot on his/her computer or is a writer. This software is very easy to use. Once you install the dictionary you can get started right away with searching for words. The interface is intuitive and simple, and there are a huge number of words to search from.4-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Collegiate & Thesaurus
An excellent doctoral professor recommended Merriam-Webster because it's the standard for APA and other professional associations. Most importantly, Merriam-Webster provides linguistically correct definitions as opposed to politically correct definitions like some of the other more conservative dictionaries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect except I have a question?
This software works great, I've never ever had a problem and I think its weird how so many have. The best part I beleive, besides the explainations and the videos, is how it memorizes every sign I look up, so I can then test myself later. This option comes in really handy. The question I have for whoever might be able to answer this is, Does the ability to download new signs every month work?As of right now, I would say that the software is old enough that it does not work, But maybe I am wrong, please let me know.Thanks..I think someone or some company should come out with a new software just like this one, with more of todays technology, but they must have the option of memorizing every signed looked up for further testing, for I feel that is a really important quality in this product, and I use it over other dictionary softwares I own.

3-0 out of 5 stars American Sign Language on CD Rom
ASL onCD Rom has great videos of each sign which can be repeated as often as you need and at your own pace. The explanations are also written but do not always match the video. In order to see the sign you must type in the word. You are not able to type in a description of a sign and find out what it means. This is an important missing part. The fingerspelling section is good for beginners but not for those who need practice in speed.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't make the mistake I did
I bought this from amazon.com.Once I received it I installed it on my mac powerbook 3400c running os 9.It ran horribly, the quicktime images overan half of the screen window of the program so it was impossible to use on my mac.Because it also has a windows version of itself on the cd I then installed it on my husband's pc.It ran much better on his pc (which upset me even more since it is supposed to be able to run on a mac), however the screen was still very small, the quicktime images choppy and the viewing area incredibly small. After trying to see if I could tweak it on both the pc and mac I have had dismal success with it.Knowing what I know now I would not have bought it.The software that runs this program from the cd is achingly old as well. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A software dud
Britannica is the best encyclopedia in print. Why, oh why, can't they get the software right? Examples: The video clips are stock footage of no instructional purpose, some are simply of animals grazing (dumb!), the audio clips are few and far between, as are the video clips. This is multimedia circa 1985! Not 2002! The clipboard function explanation was confusing. The navigator was slow and only touched upon articles directly related to the topic. What happened to a macropedia?5-0 out of 5 stars Best Keeps Getting Better
Clearly the top encyclopedia on the market.Unmatched content, nice media.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING FAST
Many of us may own encyclopedias or world books, however, most of us so stuck with the computer seldom we have time or energy to open the encyclopedia to get to an entry and read through it. With this product (issued in 1999), you could actually look up a topic or issue or idea you want to know about and do it immediately without going through the pages of a big, heavy, reference book. I am not saying that you won't need an encyclopedia or that this IBM product is as good as we expect it to be, but sometimes we do need to know something quick and traditional Encyclopedias are of no help to serve that function. This product could have been better, for sure, but I found it useful when I do not have much time to ponder on something and, especially, when I need to look up other related entries in a very short time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great maps, poor backward compatibility
This is the latest update to National Geographic's excellent CD-ROM topo maps.Since they are scanned versions of USGS paper topo maps, you get all the detail of the paper map but with all the advantages of software maps. You can create waypoints and routes on the computer, then upload them to your GPS.Or you can download waypoints and tracks from your GPS receiver and see them on the computer map.You can create elevation profiles for your tracks, measure distances, and easily switch between different map datums or coordinate formats. The only thing you can't do is load the maps themselves into your GPS receiver. This latest edition finally is designed to work with USB receivers like the Garmin GPSMap 60-series.This is a tremendous advantage compared to the previous editions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping on the Mac
This piece of software is what I have been hoping for for since I bought my machine. It is the most elegant and detailed mapping system that I have used. With the Garmin Vista Cx it works flawlessly. You can download any or all of the map data from the disks into the "Topo" file and it runs very well on my powerbook G4. It will upload all waypoints, and routes. It will download all waypoints, routes and tracks! The maps are gorgeous! The interactive web feature is cool but young. It has a geocaching feature. The 3d maps are sweet! It downloads updates and new map layers almost perfectly (had to manually download the software update). I only wish that waypoints symbols would transfer to and from my unit but I can easily live without them. Load the Mapsource maps to your device (Garmin "x" series saves to swappable memory microSD cards) and use Topo! from your laptop.

4-0 out of 5 stars CoupleQuarks
I have not used this product extensively but it had proven to be very useful for my needs. I am very pleased with it and only have a couple of comments. It has an excellent search tool and has found almost every location that I have searched on, even some very little and very remote campgrounds. This is what I was mainly interested in as the other software's I have used are very (VERY) limited in this. The only two things that I have noticed is that it does have fixed zoom ratios and the wildlife areas that I am interested in are shaded dark grey when zoomed in which is somewhat maddening. They could have used a lighter grey as it is very hard to see the mapping in these shaded areas. That is the only reason I am dropping my rating down to a 4. This product is very user friendly and I would highly recommend it, so far it has been the best bang for the buck!. Digitizing the trails and creating profiles along with flyovers is as slick and easy as can be. The same goes with plotting GPS points from ASCII onto my TOPO maps or from them. ... Read more

This is the latest update to National Geographic's excellent CD-ROM topo maps. (I have the California edition, but they all work the same.) 4-0 out of 5 stars my opinion after a few hours use of Nat. Geographic Topo States softeware
Before I bought this product I found it difficult to find reviews of Nat. Geographic topo state software as well as MapTech Terrain Navigator software, so I am giving this input for future customers.MapTech provides a demo. I'd say I prefer MapTech's 3D to Nat. Geographic's 3D version. Nat. Geographic provides more features such as greater grid spacing options. But don't expect either to print with the resolution of the regular 1:24,000 USGS maps; both software brands have to default to a larger scale to get that kind of resolution and clarity at least with ink jet printers. National Geographic Topo's 50% default setting results in an approximate print scale of 1:31,000 which results in very good clarity. However even at 1:24,000 they are legible (although a bit fuzzy). They will both save you money verses buying the regular topo maps (after 20 or so store-bought maps considering your ink and paper costs) plus they give you advantages if you use a gps unit especially in overlaying grids, trail markers, etc., on the printed-out maps. But don't forget it takes more than (4) 8 1/2" x 11" printouts to match one regular store bought 1:24,000 topo map. ...
