    Editorial Review

When Apple introduced its first generation of Intel-powered Macs, the "Are you a Mac or aPC person" question suddenly became moot. With the new Intel Mac machines, you can have the best of both Macintosh and PC worlds. Unfortunately, switching between operating systems on the new Intel Macs can be a time-consuming process. You must completely shut down OS X and endure a full start-up cycle in order to run Windows. That's where Parallels Desktop for Mac comes in. With Parallels Desktop, you can run Windows applications along with your Macintosh programs -- right on your Mac, side-by-side -- so you never have to suffer through frustrating shut-downs and re-boots just to run a program you want.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars so much faster than Virtual PC
As a long-time Apple/Mac user whose office is PC based, I used Virtual PC for years. It saved me the cost of having to buy a Windows PC, but was sometimes agonizingly slow. Parallels on my MacBook runs refreshingly fast. It was fairly easy to install. The only problem with Parallels is that you need to buy a copy of the operating system and install it on Parallels. In my case I bought and installed XP Pro. I had some minor issues when trying to run a wireless app (SlingPlayer), but solved these fairly quickly. All other applications (all business) have installed and run with no problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple to Use, Value for the Money, Stable
I am not going to repeat all the great things about this product, but I am going to clear up some confusion for the rest of us.Unlike what the other recommender wrote, I had no problems with my Dell Photo 720 USB Printer (maybe s/he forgot to "connect" the printer). In the world of Parallels Desktop for Mac, all devices, e.g. iSight, USB ports, disc drives..., could be connected to either Mac OS X or Windows, but not simulateously. Therefore, his/her USB printer was probably "connected" to Mac OS X but not to Windows.
2-0 out of 5 stars This is still in Beta
They have no business using you as their venture capitalist and making you pay to be a beta tester. It's chocky full of bugs. i.e. You can't use a USB printer in Windows XP., many more known bugs ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I've worked with Norton AntiVirus (the consumer product) and Symantec AntiVirus (the corporate product) for PCs and they're great.
1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Waste of Money
I used to be a Norton true believer, for years using everything they sold.Ever since Apple went to OS X, though, Norton has been falling down on the job.
1-0 out of 5 stars Stability Problems on Intel-based Macs
My happy MacBook Pro was working perfectly until I installed Norton Anti-Virus. Within a few hours, I started experiencing random system crashes -- hard freezes where I had to kill the power to the system.Using the "what has changed?" troubleshooting approach, I uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus, and the system has been super-stable again ever since.

4-0 out of 5 stars Virtual PC for Mac
Product works as advertised. It is slower than a native windows box but I was aware of that when I purchased it.It serves my needs in allowing me to get at windows based software that may not be available for the Mac yet.Don't regret getting it.

5-0 out of 5 stars VPC 7 hits the sweet spot for me
Had someone suggested to me last year that I would be giving Virtual PC a five-star rating, I would have told them that they were nuts. But as a long-time Mac user who has to run a couple of PC financial programs, I have to say that for my purposes, VPC7 has finally hit the sweet spot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eh...?
Why would anyone want to play games on a Mac? It's a computer for musicians, graphics designers, video editing, etc. You know, serious adult stuff. Mac OSX is based on UNIX. The previous reviewer obviously knows nothing about the stability of UNIX, which is what Mac OSX is based on. Even OS9 on a Mac never crashed as much as Windows. I love the simplicity of OS9, but OSX has so much to offer right out of the box - on a consumer level. And another great thing about Macs - they work straight out of the box, so you can get on with your life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great OS
This OS is one of the best I've used in years. I switched over from Windows and never thought of switching back. The usability is great along with the robustness. It's never crashed on me except when I was using faulty audio hardware device. The looks of it is just incredible. I came up with my own saying:"Once you go mac, you'll never go back". I gave this OS 4 stars because of Safari and it's inability to print selected portions of a website with time stamp and address, other than that it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software - excellent customer service
Prosoft has made it very simple to do backups. The program's manual is easily read.If you have questions their online help service is quick, and if that is not sufficient, I found their telephone assistance was flawless and very knowledgable.
1-0 out of 5 stars Does not do incremental backups
Began failing on incremental backups in September of 2005 (at OS version 10.3.?), worked before that. Also fails on 10.4.0-10.4.6.Always gives the same error message - indicating a programming error. Prosoft has offered no help after many attempts over a 9 month period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovering data and peace of mind
I was frantic when I discovered that I had thrown away 20 years worth of accumulated sermons, letters, articles I'd written, even book manuscripts. (Yes, I know I should have backed up! But I hadn't.) I bought this product, and recovered everything. Simple and elegant. It doesn't take a technician to do it. You can also get it on to a start-up CD, which I would think most users would want to do. My only negative is that my e-mails to ProSoft for promised free technical assistance were cryptic and only marginally helpful. But as it turned out, the software was so easy to use that it didn't matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grate product A++++++++ !!!!!!!!!Saved the day!!!!!!!!!
I had a drive that would not mountand thought my data was lost forever. But then I found this software that saved the day. Data Rescue II was able to recover all of my music, programs, photos and videos that where on the drive. I also was abal to recover songs and other files that where accidently deleted from the past. My drive is now better then it was before I had the problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Did the job!
I'm very impressed with this product. After buying DiskWarrior (which did not work) I downloaded the free trial of Data Rescue and was pleasantly surprised. In about 7 hours it read my severely damaged hard drive and saved thousands of my files.Well worth the price, particularly since it's risk free to buy the trial version. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Giant Disappointment
'Bought it, and sent it back for a refund.I should have believed all of the negative reviews that Retrospect received (on the Amazon site).I am a skilled personal computer user who has installed and successfully operated a large amount of both software and hardware. However, I was unsuccessful at getting Retrospect to perform properly. My rating of Retrospect is "Junk".Worse yet, I could not find a Help Line telephone number to talk with a real person - that might have made a big difference. They want you to use their website for ALL problem solving.Well think of this: if their instructions included in their big manual didn't work in the first place, why would you expect the website to work? They ought to be paying me for time lost and shipping charges.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bad thing to start
If you're not already a user, Retrospect for Mac is not a product you want to buy into. The interface hasn't been substantially updated in over a decade. In this decade Dantz (EMC) has charged it's users half a dozen times for "upgrades" which should be free updates as all that was added was the ability to actually work with the current operating system.
1-0 out of 5 stars Shameful Marketing, Manual Writing and Software Design
Over the past two months I've tried to get this software to create two sets of incremental backups of a Mac on two USB2 hard disks.Despite more than 20 years experience with computers, and a successful installation of Norton Ghost 9.0 backup software on a PC, I have not been able to get dantz Retrospect Backup 6.0 Desktop Macintosh to work on my system.I'm sure that a dantz(TM) engineer could sit down in front of the Mac, execute a dozen or so commands and get it to work properly, but that would not in any way prove that Retrospect Backup 6.0 is an acceptable product. The problem of this, and many other software packages, is that there are a huge number of combinations of optional settings that don't work, so if the errors are intermittant, it can take years to debug without proper guidance from the designers. The Retrospect Backup 6.0 backup manual is at least six times thicker than the manual that came with first MacIntosh computers. Its content usefulness is next to zero. The same can be said for the usefulness of the online help menus. The consumer expectation for a desktop backup solution is a single button guiding you through menus and getting the setup done and verified in five minutes. With so much easy-to-use and intuitive Mac and PC software available today, it is next to criminal for the dantz(TM) marketing materials to claim ease of use, especially software written for Mac, where the ease-of-use standard is very high.I recommend that people never buy any dantz(TM) software product. If the CEO feels otherwise, I'd like to hear his/her case and I may reconsider. When they call I will only charge two dollars per minute. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars agree with last reviewer
I downloaded the software to see how set up was and found that, while it is powerful software, it is a nightmare to set up.I don't want to learn programming (applescript) in order to have a business phone system.I want to buy a car, not a kit car with assembly (and some fabrication!) required! If you want to make a career out of setting up a voicemail system this software/hardware this appears to be the product for you!I have ordered a competing product, Phonevalet, and plan to write a review on that product. (they do not offer a download to take a look at the software but they do offer a 30 day moneyback guarantee) I hope this helps you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid product, great support, amazing depth of features
I've been using a Mac for my voicemail since my Performa 6320, and Phlink is the best Mac voicemail product ever. I have it running on an old 600MHz iBook and it works great. The basic functionality (like sending yourself emails of the recordings) is simple to set up, and for advanced users the AppleScript ability is awesome. By using a simple folder hierarchy, you can create unlimited mailboxes and voice trees for companies. The documentation is good and easy to understand.
2-0 out of 5 stars this is hard
So I've been tinkering with this for a few hours now, and I have to say I was disappointed by how much of the cool functionality appears to be dependent on the user's knowledge of AppleScript. I'm a fairly technical person, but I don't have a lot of confidence when it comes to tweaking or merging applescripts. This is way over my head, and I've been using a Mac since 1984. ... Read more

Have only started to use it but so far... I have had problems and will now have to consult their manual to see if its fixable... Operating the program intuitively and from experience from past versions, I was disappointed to see the first CD I burned which should have contained about 18 songs did NOT record several tracks.. could be my fault but I didn't do anything differently to the tracks which did record as opposed to the tracks that didn't record but did take up space on the burned CD.. back to the drawing board..

I bought the product from Amazon. After installing this product, I tried to install the updates only to find out that I have to register the product in order to install their bug fixes. So after typing in their long registration code, it wouldn't accept it because it said it was for Toast and not for Toast with Jam.The box had not code for Toast with Jam, only one for Toast and one for Jam.There is no technical support. No apparent way to e-mail them for technical support. If there is a way, they have hidden it very well.
4-0 out of 5 stars The DVD Music Album alone is worth the high price...
The DVD Music Album feature has allowed me to start consolidating all of my live recordings onto DVDs.I've burned two so far, one with 8 CDs and one with about a dozen or so CDs.The only reason I did not give the full five stars is that I've had two DVDs "coastered" during a failed burn. When it comes to burning audio, TwJ is far superior to iTunes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still #1
I have been using this latest edition of Omnipage with my Mac OSX 3.9 without even reading the instructions. The last version I used was several years ago because I had received ReadIris with my scanner.I found ReadIris SO frustrating I just quit using it.It never worked accurately nor correctly for me -- and I had been spoiled previously with the ease of Omipage.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Doesn't seem to work under 10.3.2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't satisfy this long-time user
I've used Omnipage for years, going through almost all the versions since the first. When an upgrade appeared it consistently offered incremental improvements and I rarely had to even glance at the user's manual.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Personal Backup X4:Easy to use backup software
Intego Personal Backup X4 version 10.4.5 is complete backupprogram for the Macintosh computers running Mac OS X.I started out evaluating version 10.4.4 and ended with version 10.4.5.This backup program is a Universal Application which will run on Apple's new Intel based Macintoshes and the older PowerPC based Macintoshes. The new version supports OS 10.4, but the program is compatible with Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher.I tested the program using Mac Mini PowerPC processor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stable and pretty? Yes. Worth the upgrade from 10.3? Arguably, no.
If you're reading this review, odds are you own a Mac a little over 1.5 years old (with 10.3 preinstalled) and are considering the Tiger update. Even more so at its nowdiscounted price (with a new OS looming on the horizon). Is it worth the price and effort to take the plunge? Unless you're a cutting-edge user running a G5 system, probably not.
1-0 out of 5 stars If I could put negative 1 trillionstars I would
There is no question. This is probably the worst operating system to ever come out into the computer industry. Basically, its a piece... Well, you know what I mean. I promise you, there is a VERY GOOD REASON WHY WINDOWS IS THE MOST POPULAR OS IN THE WORLD. Most of what this OS has is stolen from other OS's, even things like widgets (on the dashboard), minimizing windows (from Microsoft Windows), the very NAME "Windows" (used to describe open applications on the desktop), maximizing windows, virtually everything on it is copied from other OS's, and there is a reason why Apple did this. Their OS is terrible, and they needed to steal from other companies in order to make theirs popular, which even now isn't as popular as Windows, which it stole primarily from. The reason I am writing this review isn't just to trash something on the net, its to help others not fall into the trap that Apple makes out of its OS. Sure, alot of proffesional people use it, but that's because they only need to do one thing, and Apple can do that, but nothing else. If you need to do anything other than browse the web (Apple can't even do that very well, with Safari), then get Windows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buying a Mac? Learn about OSx86 and VMware.
Apple announced that Intel core duo processors will be used in the new range of Macs. Hardware developers and programmers and just about everyone else ask what is stopping OSX from running on a non-apple computer with Intel processors... turns out that there was not much except for some code in the OSX software. Then somebody changes the code in the fall of 2005. Now everyone who wants to see and use OSX before they buy gets VMware, obtains a copy of OSx86 and boots the latest Mac OS on Windows or Linux. This is not dual booting. VMware is virtualization software. Modern hardware is fast enough to run other Operating Systems at 75% or above speed at the same time. Seeing OSX running on Windows or Linux will have eyes open wide in the room around you. For Mac users who have shelled out their hard earned cash on a Mac, seeing this reaches down into the very depth of the soul. Apple announces a new boot camp that allows Macs to dual boot Windows, but not virtualize it. Back in the 80s - 90s there was good reason to own Mac hardware. In the 21st century all hardware companies are mostly using third world sources to build their components. So in terms of Mac hardware versus clone PCs, there is not much difference anymore. OSx86 booting on a non-apple computer is the biggest event in the history of Apple Macintosh. It will make you think.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not like we had much choice !
Whether it's a pc or a mac, symantec always has a decent software package.2-0 out of 5 stars Norton who???
Version 1.0 is average at best and this is also only able to run in OS 9 or lower. It does not run natively in OS X, but they have come out with a 2.0 version. The 1.0 version does have good optimization and defragmenting properties, but the 2.0 version has included Alsoft's Disk Warrior. Makes one wonder why Symantec would share the spotlight with another software company. I know why but will remain silent at this time...

5-0 out of 5 stars How did I cope without Systemworks!!!
I bought Norton Systemworks after suspecting I had downloaded a virus on my Mac. I had never used the product (or any other like it) before, so I was pleased that it was user friendly and extremely efficient. I ran both Antivirus and Utilities (both included in the price) to check my system for bugs and general "bad things" and within 2 hours, my Mac was back to its old self. Read more

I bought this package after upgraded my PowwerbookG4 to Tiger in Sept. 2005.The Autoprotect and Firewall never worked. The Symantac Co admitted this probelm in their website and never offered a solution for these problems.A piece of junk!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Fraudulent sales at it's worst
I purchased this back in August '05 at the same time that I bought my new iMac running OS 10.4 Tiger. It's advertised, and lists system requirements as Mac OS 10.1.5 OR HIGHER. Didn't work since it was installed. Waited and waited for the patch or update to allow it to work with OS 10.4, low and behold, they recently just posted a buried footnote on their site saying that it IS NOT going to be updated to work with OS 10.4. Tried to contact their customer service....still waiting for a response. (...) I was a repeat customer of Symantec products...this is the last money they'll rip me off for! Where is the class action lawsuit? Sign me up. ... Read more
