3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Subscriber
I've been a McAfee subcriber for about 5 years.I switched from Norton because I felt it was too complicated and had too much control over my computer.I found McAfee to be user friendly.I can't say that I'm pleased with the 2006 version. The platform is a complete change. In the previous versions, I kept log of the Internet in/out bound access and the system processes. The new version only has the SystemGuard event log which is useless to me. My computer freezes often now. Because of the limited event log, I can't determinewhere the problem is. The previous version would have shown the details.I'm considering not renewing my subcription another year. Customer service could use some improvement.Though the few times I've needed their assistance, the representatives have been helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars dependable
I tried other firewalls and had all types of problems with updates. McCafee seems to update in the backround and so far I have had no problem. I have used Virus scan for about 5-6 yrs and never had a virus or any problems with updating- found a good company and aim to stay with them.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's the fuss about?
My Mcafee seems to work perfectly fine. Never any problems updating or connecting to or downloading from !! Bad Sites !!, They're very responsive the few times I've downloaded a trojan or such, and promptly delete said nefarious program. Yeah, the customer service sucks!!!!! One time on a default viruscan I came up with no fewer than 10 ( suppposedly infected files ) viruses. The problem was due to an incompetent DAT update which misread certain files and lined them up for deletion. That was maybe 10 months ago. Alas, I never did get a reply. maybe auto telephone and fake e-mail correspondents are par for the course in Mcafeeland. But for a premier service I think it's kinda wonky. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Definition ofRIPE STINKER = Norton Personal Firewall 2005 - Single User

1-0 out of 5 stars If you value your privacy, do not buy Norton Internet Security
I have used Norton/Symantec for over 5 years and had previously been completely satisfied...until the 2005 version came out. I purchased 2005 and almost from the moment of installation on my brand new Dell 2.8 ghz, I began having problems. Once I got those corrected, my machine got slower and slower. I suspected that Symantec had programmed a spyware/tracking feature into the security system but of course, they emphatically denied it. So, I looked to my ISP and Internet Explorer for answers. Neither was able to understand why I was having the continual slow-opening web pages except to offer the suggestion that perhaps spyware had somehow integrated itself into the system. Of course, I didn't mention that I use Ad-Aware, Spybot and CCleaner every week. After 75+ emails back and forth to Symantec (because it became abundantly clear that their telephone support staff had no interest in fixing anything), I finally told "Hajeesh" not ever to contact me again...that I would never buy another Norton product...that I believed they had a tracking system installed which slows my computer to a crawl and that their "security system" is a piece of junk. Lo and behold, it seems the State of Texas Attorney General is, in fact, suing Symantec/Norton because there IS a spyware tracking device installed in their programs which is totally undetectable by any of the other spyware products. So, a word to the wise, stay as far clear of Symantec/Norton as you can if you care anything about your privacy or the speed of your computing.

    1-0 out of 5 stars A Nightmare!
Would not install (non-stop errors).Continually showed "disabled" (I'd enable it on the menu and the icon would only show "disabled").Crashed my other software.Support is NONEXISTENT!(They have the nerve to charge $30.00 for technical support- per incident- for help with the garbage they've sold you.Perhaps the only way to actually get help but they weren't getting another dime out of me)I can't believe what's happened with this company.Three years ago it was all we used in our offices (and me at home).Honestly, this has been the worst experience I've ever had with any software. My other four computers have McAfee (no problems). One came with Norton AntiVirus preinstalled so I purchased the (same) firewall.Needless to say they BOTH went!Never again!Just hearing the word "Norton" gives me hives- ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Spontaneous restarts
I am running this on an older PC under Windows 98, with dial-up, and I have almost daily system fallovers and spontaneous restarts that are unquestionably the result of PC Cillin glitches.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good product, poor service
I bought this product based on independent reviews by consumer and PC magazines. The product's performance was OK, but customer service was a headache. The serial number on the CD that was shipped to me came up as "invalid" when I tried to install the software.I had to call customer service, who gave me two more serial numbers before the software would accept one as valid. Now, one year later I want to upgrade my software to the current version (to save $$ over a new purchase) and guess what?My serial number is invalid and in order to upgrade via the Trend site I will have to pay more than what Amazon would charge me for a brand new CD.I will most likely switch to ZoneAlarm because of the hassles involved in registering and upgrading this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID ALL TREND MICRO PRODUCTS
If I could give less than 1 star for any Trend Micro product I would. It gives too many false positives when you don't even have a virus. You are going nuts trying to find where the virus is and there is not even one there as Trend told you there was. Avoid this like the plague and save your hard earned money. It's a piece of crap. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NIS is now the problem, not the solution
I have used Symantec and Norton products for years with good success. But Norton Intenet Security is a disaster.Unexpectedly, after a long period of problem free operation, I encountered a series of problems on my computer.E-mail would not work.Ping URL locked up (but Ping IP worked OK). Microsoft task manager would not stop non-responsive tasks, plus several other problems. After paying Microsoft to help diagnose, it turned out that the culprit was NIS2005.Turn firewall off and everything works fine. There is no effective support from Symantec without paying half again for the product. Now a new problem has surfaced. NIS is asking to activate the software again (it was activated when purchased). The web says that there are all sorts of unrecoverable problems with NIS activation, and I can't afford to spend another day with more problems.Originally, Symantec was a good company, but I think they have lost it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Online Activation?????
Let me start by saying that I have pretty much always used Norton software for computer safety and have not been disappointed, and that is the only reason that It gets 2 stars (more like 1 1/2) since I am sure that it works just as well as their other products. Also, I am a college student and can seldom to afford to purchase either new versions or subscription fees that Norton seems to enjoy doing these days. I figured that I would just bite the bullet this year since it has been at least 3 years since I have upgraded any of the older packages that I own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition creates as many problems as it solves
After reading many reviews, both postitive and negative, of the Norton Internet Security 2005 Antispyware Edition, I went ahead and purchased it.I have been a Norton user for years, so I decided to take a chance. It installed easily and worked beautifully for almost two months. Then my computer started crashing. After many attempts to find the root of the problem and after much expense, I am convinced, as other reviewers warned, the Norton software is to blame. Now I cannot turn off my computer without its crashing; I am unable to update my antivirus protection because I get a message via the Norton software that it cannot make an Internet connection. (I have followed all directions for correcting this that is found on the Norton website, but nothing works.) Also, the software really slows down the receiving of email. And forget getting any help from Norton other than what is written on their website. In essence, I have paid a hefty sum for software that causes crashes, causes sluggish performance and worst of all, cannot give me up-to-date protection. I feel totally ripped off.So tonight I am going to uninstall Norton (which from past experience I suppose will involve more than a simple uninstall click) and try PC-cillin.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Multi Dollar Allusion to Buying an Apple Computer
This product is an absolute menace to my normal daily internet activity. It blocks Java links well, so well in fact, that I am having troubles getting around on quite a few pages and also other strange stuff is happening to my page-layouts.

4-0 out of 5 stars McAfee strengths and weaknesses
I have been using McAfee for a couple of years and when the Security Suite is up and running it is very good. I added Quick Clean to it and find that very useful in tuning my PC. But there is a downside - every few months McAfee tell me that one of the products - say Spam Killer - is out of date. So I go on line for "chat" which is very tedious and rarther worse than watching paint drying. Inevitably they tell you to uninstall the product and reinstall and that results in mega problems. Today after manuall uninstalling the five items in the Security Suite I found that I had compeletely lost my Outlook - all gone - personal folders - email - contacts and calendar. A real nightmare. It took many phone calls and all day to resolve. Customer support and tech support are dreadful. Virus Scan does however work well and kept all sorts of nasty stuff at bay for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This! It's Slow, a Resource Hog & Caused both browsers to Cease Functioning! Use [free] Spybot S&D 3.1 + free Hostman
Awful,Awful,Awful,Terrible, Terrible,Terrible. I should have listened to the reviewers on here! Especially when the one guy here said that Macafee IS the virus. He was right. I just could not believe it could be soooo different from the recently discontinued 4.5.1 for school/corporations [enterprise]. Boy, was i wrong! Not only does it take minutes to start up, Most of the time, after that, you can hardly even move your mouse [even though a resource meter shows hardly much usage]. What a lemon! I Tried reinstalling 2 or 3 times, rebooted 6-7x, re-updated 3x's etc. Error. U can't adjust anything or uninstall its addware in 1 step & it doesn't tell u what it's doing. U cannot remove it's adware in 1 step. Never detected anything- or didn't tell me?! Try free sharewares: Spybot 3.1 Search&destroy, maybe add Hostman + a firewall. Goin' maybe 4 Panda. This or nothin? Gimme nothing.

2-0 out of 5 stars SO SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!
I chose this software after my Norton expired.I have always hated the way Norton has so many applications running at the same time.I was worried it was taking up too much of my CPU.I decided to try Mcafee since it was free.I am disgusted with it and don't even want it for free.Every time I open up applications, the computer runs slow for about 30 seconds; do a search on your hard drive, slow again.I uninstalled and the computer races through these applications.I understand that I have to have a little trade off when it comes to making sure I'm protected but this program is a resource HOG!Even with all the junk norton was running, I never had this problem with Norton. My next step is to try AVG Free.I just hope that someone comes out with security software that doesn't think it owns the entire computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product for the $$
I found a lot of negative reviews on this site. After checking some other sources and talking to some tech guru friends of mine, I decided to buy the software. It works flawlessly with my office network (single user DSL) and my home network (WiFi with a cable modem ISP).In addition, I have not seen any conflicts with Norton 2004.I love being prompted before my computer "talks" to the internet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job. And does it well.
Quite frankly, Zone Alarm Pro 4 (ZAP) does the job. And does the job well. With customizable setting for programs and websites, and configurable popups to let you, the user, choose what exactly is and isn't allowed to access the internet, ZAP is essential.1-0 out of 5 stars Nope nope nope
Product activation code is supposed to arrive within two-three business days by email. This took three weeks. And you MUST have it to run the software. After finally getting the code, we had many problems with the software BUT could not return it because by that time, the return period expired. If you have a home network, this is not a good choice. ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Rip-Off
I've had nothing but problems with this software. After many attempts with customer support, they were unable to help me and simply gave up, saying that the problem, "was with my set-up, not their software."I finally uninstalled the program and threw it away. You are better off using your router's built-in security features.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lies and then more lies
The product did not work with Parkervision routers, and evidently does not with others as well. The response from OTO software is that they would come up with a solution in a "timely" manner. Three months later an email to them resulted in the reply that they were not going to be doing anything like that at all. A waste of money and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and it Works
I've often bought programs similar to this one and they didn't work much and were a waste. Not this! It's easy, and works! Useful to see the current connections too. They gave the correct list of default passwords for the routers. It works with the Linksys Range Expander and you can Friend/Foe/Unknown that devise. I was worried it would not work w/ my network, spend hours on this, frustation, but none of that! A charm. Highly recommend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, excellent software
I've owned and used BlackIce for over 7 years now. In all it's upgrades, it has been a non-intrusive, easy to use and effective software product.1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Investment
This Software is not worth the money or the trouble. I had problems since day one when I installed this piece of junk. My start up programs would not load when the application protection feature is on. Even talking to the support people still haven't got the damn software to work the way is suppose to. Piece of advice. Do not purchase this piece of junk. Stick to Symantec there are far better with their software than what this people is. This BlackIce piece of junk it ain't worth the time or the money. This is the worst software I ever bought. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Norton STINKS
I had Norton Internet Security installed on my computer when bought new 10 months ago.Shortly after running the computer it gradually slowed down and would not load things, freeze up etc...I thought my computer was messed up and after some trial and error, I discovered that Norton was causing my problems.I installed Computer Associates EZ trust software (which I use on my Windows XP laptop that did not experience any problems) and deleted Norton and my problems ceased.I WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND THIS PROGRAM!!! I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have no problem, but judging by the number of negative reviews here that they are the minority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Norton Internet Security 2005
Great protection, installed easier than 2003 and 2002 versions. This product has saved our PC's many times.
1-0 out of 5 stars Norton Anti-Spam is a hoax; how can they do this to us?
I have been using Norton internet security software for several years; I suppose the anti-virus and the firewall parts of their current package work OK; certainly they never stop up-grading, almost daily, to my considerable irritation. But the "AntiSpam" is a joke!I tell "AntiSpam", in the "Rules", to treat any e-mail with "Rate", "rate", "Rates" or "rates" in the "from" space as spam. But e-mail with these words in the "from" space get through ALL THE TIME.Is it so very hard to write software to check whether any of these four little words (or any four little words) are in a "from" space? I could give several other examples of the total failure of Norton AntiSpam to do anything like it claims to do, involving equally simple tasks like the "rates" one.I usea Pentium 4 at 2.5G with oceans of hard drive space.I think some, or all the, people at Symantec should be ashamed of themselves for foisting such a less-than-worthless hoax on us, the buyers.I say "less-than-worthless" because it wastes good hard drive space which could be used for better purposes, and because it suggests a false sense of security, at least for a while. If you are thinking of buying this product, please don't.Maybe if sales go down, then Symantec will decide to try and give some value for money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars You can not have a better wireless security without it.
I am a very concerned person for wireless security. I did a lot of research and tried different solutions with limited success. I was skeptical about this software at the beginning, but it works near perfectly. You have to know the basic settings of your router (username, password) and it does the rest. It creates a long WPA or WEP key (based on your selection). It rotates the key as often as you like. I do not get any error messages and can easily reconnect to my network.
2-0 out of 5 stars Concerns about actual level of security provided
WiTopia.Net's SecureMyWiFi and BoxedWireless offer similar products. Although they make it completely clear they are providing the highest level of security available (WPA-Enterprise) backed up by RADIUS servers (what a corporation or Government uses to ensure top knotch wireless security), it is hard to determine what exactly McAfee is doing here but providing glorified WEP (which has been shown to be easily compromisable) with a key rotation. They do enable "WPA" security but it looks like it may be just the "personal" kind which is weaker. Useful product that solves a big and growing problem but they need to make more clear what exactly they are doing to secure your network like WiTopia.Net and BoxedWireless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Questionable security
This might be a very good product, but I can't tell from the documentation or customer support. Since its purpose is security, the lack of confidence I have in it renders it unacceptable. The product will not let me access security settings because it reports I am not connected to a "protected network." My network does show up as secured, so I asked what the difference between "secured" and "protected" is. McAfee customer chat support, could not answer the question. They included advertising text from their product description and forwarded it in their responses. It was the same stuff on the box the product came in. Then they said they would email additional information and call me. They did neither. It could be I don't understand the terminology, as I pointed out to McAfee, but apparently, their customer support doesn't either. Two uninformed participants make for a lousy conversation. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good, for a while, but NO tech support
When I first received the product and installed it I had a few configuration issues (not unusual) but now, after 8 months of service, they are telling me I need to purchase an upgrade ($69.99) or I will have no virus protection.I contacted Customer Service (what a misnomer) as no one was available to actually speak to me and the automated system was like one of those automated phone loops you enter when trying to contact any company.I finally gave up and an now shopping for a newer and more reliable antivirus and protection system.I did not get a full year of service, got jerked around and have lost all faith in this software package.I wish any other users good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars No ZoneAlarm support unless You buy from ZoneAlarm
Great software! Until You have a question or a problem that is. Then You get the run around BIG TIME! ZoneAlarm says they didn't sell it to me so they can't help me. They send me to Broderbund for help. Broderbund then sends me to Encore for help and they won't help me either. ZoneAlarm states if I didn't buy it right from ZoneAlarm then they don't give any support.
3-0 out of 5 stars ZoneAlarm does the job, but it irritates...
This software installed just fine. Our biggest beef is that we don't know what it's doing behind the scenes. The logs are pitifully thin. On a daily basis, our system "goes to sleep", and we're convinced it's due to ZA doing something behind the scenes. On a number of occasions, the Anti-Virus sweep has kicked off in the middle of a busy day, instead of running at its appointed time of 1:30 AM, when we're asleep. And many of the configuration screens where you can click boxes don't have enough information (for this novice, anyway) to make an informed decision about whether "to check or not to check". It seems to be less intrusive the Norton, but less intuitive, too. We just want to know what it is doing on our behalf, and the logs sure don't tell any stories. ... Read more

As long as a computer is connected to the Internet--by phone line, DSL, cable, or any other means--it is vulnerable to myriad attacks from the cyber-equivalent of late-night stalkers. Norton Personal Firewall 2002 provides a virtual barrier to these attacks without requiring a doctorate in computer architecture to install and run.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Using a remote destop connection with Norton firewall
I find Norton Personal Firewall to be a very frustrating at times. However it does its job.I tried establishing a remote desktop connection and spent many frustrating attempts before getting it to work.If you're trying to set up a remote desktop connection you first have to open the proper port (3389) then create a general rule. The rule should allow inbound connections, from a specific computer (if static IP Address) for more security or it can be set from any computer, Communications: Any (should work with local port 3389), Protocol: TCP and UDP, tracking: security alert and logging.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Sure, it blocks ports... all of them! After fussing for a day to get Remote Desktop to work (and unblocking port 3389 numerous times) I finally decided I needed help.To my surprise Symantec offers NO free tech support.I surfed the "online support" (term used loosely) and found nothing referring to Remote Desktop... Finally I needed to get back to work and decided to pay the $29.95 for phone support only to get a message stating that they were too busy, please check the website for solutions.1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
I would just like to comment very briefly on this product, that all seemed to be doing well and it did manage to work very well for a number of weeks. However it completly prevented me from viewing any websites under a 'secure server' Its caused me many wasted days with little access to the net. Money down the drain for this product, avoid! ...
