Editorial Review

Enhance productivity and reduce computing costs with Windows NT Workstation, the most powerful desktop operating system for business computing. Windows NT Workstation offers greater performance and combines the ease of use of Windows 95 with the reliability and security of Windows NT. Version 4.0 features many improvements over earlier versions. This version touts 20 percent higher performance and greater ease of use with the Windows 95 user interface. Simplified tools include the familiar Start button, Taskbar, Shortcuts, Network Neighborhood, and My Computer. This software also offers easier management and control with User Profiles and System Policies that give users network access control, and it supports users who roam between multiple workstations. The Setup Manager reduces the time and effort it will take to deploy Windows NT Workstation, and an improved version of the Windows NT Diagnostics Program greatly facilitates remote desktop troubleshooting. These tools all help you reduce the total cost of ownership of distributed PCs. This is an upgrade package that requires an earlier version of Microsoft Windows NT. The software will not upgrade Windows 3.1, 95, or 98. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Great After Almost 8 Years On The Market!
After being on the market for almost eight years, Windows NT 4.0 is still a great option for people looking for a stable and powerful operating system. The OS is especially great for older systems as it only requires a 486 w/ 16 mb of RAM to run. (though a Pentium+ is recommended and helpful). Don't choose NT if you're looking for USB or games, though, as the support for DirectX & USB is skimpy at best. (it isn't hopeless, though) So, if you're looking for a good, proven OS, NT is an option.

3-0 out of 5 stars If passing an A+ exam...
This NOS is currently being used in todays business environment.. It is still an industry standard and is included in exams suchas the 2003 A+ objectives - why not buy a copy at its relatively low price!!?

1-0 out of 5 stars Still thinking about NT 4.0?? Go for 2000.
Why would spend money on soon-to-be obsolete NT 4.0? Go for 2000 servers,it will save you money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars dont get it if you have Window 95 and your computer crashed
i have windowss 95 and my computer crashed so i got it and it didnt help AT ALL!!!! SO DONT GET IT IF U DO!!

3-0 out of 5 stars old school!!!
Why would any person buy WinNT. One you can't install games on it because it's not any newer then Win98/2000/XP. XP is much better. Allow me to explane. One XP runs faster then NT, 2 It lets you install every game on it! This WinNT is newer then Win95 but it's still very old!

4-0 out of 5 stars 2000 or XP2, goodbye to the original Microsoft Stability OS.
Running Windows 95 and that means Windows 98 is illegal in your country and you are in the land of needing a new computer fast, feeling that you might have a box that looks like it is running windows 3.1 and to be honest now is your chance to move to Windows 2000 for a more solid operating system. Even NT users found more stability in Windows 2000, 98 users mostly gamers or downloaders, seeing the blue screen of death often, while Win 2K users doing something a little more software intensive like multimedia, graphics and servers that 98 could not manage. So came the day of the duel-processor, having an NT Dual 500mhz, upgrading to Win2K and you still had a fast machine, 64mb and 128mb games cards never really impressing you that much to get a better machine, a games console maybe cheaper and better, XP a little slow for you and besides, 2K was compatible with nearly everything and you could duel boot linux for fun. The only reason to buy a computer between the release of XP and now was if you did not have one and even then plenty of second hand units going around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very ... developer friendly
I have been programming activex in NT for years. Each time I update the software, I have to reboot the server to release the object that already loaded in the memory.Even though I did a set object.close and set object = nothing, sometimes it didn't kill the process successfully.Other than that, I think NT is ok.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly solid
We have used this product for over 3 years and have been mostly satisfiedwith its performance. We are a shop that runs both a variety of UNIXplatforms as well as NT 4.0. NT, while providing a nice graphicalenvironment, still lacks much in the way of reliability and flexibility.Even for the seasoned UNIX user, NT's permissions can be some what cryptic.Record locking can be a real nightmare, often requiring the reboot of theserver to release a record that has been locked. Still overall, it is afairly solid performer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Performer
We use NT Server 4.0 now and have for about a year now. It has been a solid performer and we have very rarly had to shutdown. Usually when we do, it is because we upgraded something, added software or had hardwareproblems (IBM). There are a few features we would like to see such asbetter compatability with Win95 and a better messaging service as well aseasier notes integration with Lotus Notes. But other than those things, Weare pretty pleased. ... Read more
