5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected it to be.
I didn't encounter any problems with this product infact it was much easier to use and it allows you to combine and orginaze text files, chart spreadsheets, drawings, PDF documents and more into a single compressed package with advanced security features it also has many tools, overall this product was fantastic and I cannot recommend this highly enough. The interface and toolbars might be annoying but that is just a slight problem since it can be taken down and become more user friendly. The other reviewers who complained about this being slower need to know that this is just the standard edition which I use, there is a better edition which is The Professional Full Product of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 that also includes an upgrade.....

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly a downgrade
I loved Acrobat 6.7 is a slower, somewhat less stable version. The OCR functionality actually seems to have gotten worse -- in speed, accuracy and friendliness -- which is remarkable.Scanned files tend to be a bit bigger than in 6.It crashes infrequently, but still more often than 6.7 Has lots of bells and whistles for commenting, but I don't write much by committee. When I do, I use Word. All the ornamentation is pretty, but also makes for big, unstable files fairly quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars I HATE this product
At my business we are required to scan things to PDF documents to send to our clients. I love the PDF format. It is a great way to easily condense documents into small file sizes while still maintaining quality. It's unfortunate that I haven't found a way to create PDF without going through Adobe first. As the IT guy in our office, Acrobat problems is the biggest thing I get called about. This is the most bloated invasive software I have ever used, even more so than some spyware I've seen. It installs itself EVERYWHERE.
3-0 out of 5 stars Acrobat 6
I really think many of the visual upgrades made to Acrobat 6(over Acrobat 5) only made it more clumsy. The core product is still great.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh... Version 5 was fine.
I've been a fan (and user) of Acrobat for many years, and am continually amazed by the number of organizations that *don't* circulate their documents in PDF format. I don't even *read* Word attachments anymore, for fear of viruses and because I *know* they won't look like the author intended.

Any business that requires documents to be shared, reviewed, and editedacross broad networks will undoubtedly benefit from Adobe Acrobat 5.0. If you'venever used Acrobat before, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to convert Officedocuments and Web pages to PDF files (portable document format). If you alreadyuse Acrobat, new features and enhancements--including the ability to uploaddocuments to Web sites and intranets--make this version a worthwhile upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Acrobat 5.0
I was familiar with this product before I purchased it. I was leary about purchasing it without the manual or other documentation -- just the CD -- but I took a chance, based on Amazon.com's reputation for standing by their processes.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best deal going right now for Acrobat
By the time I was done reading the reviews for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 I was depressed. Not only do I not have Windows XP, or Windows 2000, or NT installed in my machine (The only operating systems that will work with 6) I also couldn't muster up the confidence in the product after so many people were giving it the thumbs down. I want to create an eBook, and Adobe Reader is the most popular reader out there, with some 400 million, to a half a billion users with it installed. What a dilemma. I kept coming back to read some more. Finally I found the answer. I bought a new Adobe Acrobat 5.0 here at Amazon from one of their vendors, and it works great with my Windows 98SE. I planned on buying the 6.0 upgrade after they got the bugs out, and or I got a new computer with XP. Then I found out that 5.0 was the only version before, and that was the professional version. 6.0 Standard is a geared down version of 5. Ok, so it has some additional features, but it is missing all the rest of the professional features that 5 has. 3-0 out of 5 stars Merely a Stepping Stone
Since, for some unknown reason, Adobe doesn't offer a direct upgrade path from Acrobat 3 to Acrobat 6, I bought this Acrobat 5 Upgrade merely so I could qualify for a free upgrade to Acrobat 6.Not only is this silly of Adobe, it's also expensive.Instead of buying an Acrobat 6 package, sticking my old Acrobat 3 CD into the drive, and continuing on my way without further hassle or expense, I had to buy the Acrobat 5 upgrade, go to the Adobe website to find their customer support phone number, call them via their 800 number, get them copies of the receipt, pay a token shipping cost, and then install the new software. What's even worse is that I've spent over six weeks trying to do that.Amazon got me the package immediately. But, so far, I've had to talk to Adobe (at their expense) five times. The first time was to find out that the upgrade existed and get the instructions for faxing the information to them.Supposedly, my fax never arrived. Then, I had to talk to them about that and get a snail-mail address.Supposedly, THAT package never arrived. Then, with my next call, I managed to get an email address to send the documents to.Again, supposedly, that never arrived. Finally, I talked to a person who had me re-fax just the receipt and my Acrobat 3 serial number. She called me back within a half an hour and we completed the whole process (confirmed my shipping address and got a credit card number for the shipping fee).Besides the hassle I had to go through, this upgrade must have cost Adobe a bundle in phone and support personnel costs. The free upgrade period from Acrobat 5 to 6 is over now, but Adobe really needs to come up with a better way for their old Acrobat 3 customers to upgrade. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Acrobat 7 standard
It has some nice upgrades from version 6.It is quicker than the previous version. Highlighting text is a bit easier. It caused a few problems with my officejet 5510xi and its ports, but I found a patch for the officejet and all is well.It is a product that is helpful in my work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleaner look and feel
The new Adobe Acrobat has a cleaner look and feel, and is more user-friendly.I especially apreciate the new quick distiller buttons in any Microsoft application, which allow you to create a PDF in one click rather than having to go to File and Print. Some functionality as before, with some new organization and better look/feel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yet

3-0 out of 5 stars Great functionality but misleading samples and slow speed
Acrobat 7 introduces much new functionality in both document review and forms creation.I found the document review functionality to be very well done and very powerfull. It has great depth as a review and markup tool.It is in the area of forms creation with Designer 7 that I found problems.First I found much of the information misleading. I was interested in some specific functionality that PRO was supposed to turn on for Viewer only users. After activating that functionality and finding that it still didn't work with Viewer, I learned that it wasn't just the PRO version of Acrobat that was needed but another Adobe server product costing tens of thousands of dollars.Kind of like giving someone a key to the bank when everything of value is stored in the vault. The second issue was one of speed.I took an existing form created in MS Word and converted it to Acrobat. That process worked well but when I added dynamic elements things slowed to a crawl.Dynamic elements are things like, areas that expaned as users type or checkboxes that show or hide form areas as needed.Everything worked, but some elements took 10 seconds to refresh on a 2.4 gig computer.Lastly a warning about the new file format used by Acrobat 7.The forms functionality provided by Designer 7 changes the Acrobat format into an entirely new file type.As such that new file type does not work with many (any ?) exiting Acrobat compatible server products. In fact it even prevents Acrobat Pro 7 from doing things like batch combining of Acrobat files.Time will most probably solve both the speed and compatibility issues.I just wish that software manufactures would provide a document showing the pluses and minus offered when upgrading to a major new release like Acrobat 7.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hair-pulling Conflicts with Word
I've wasted hours and frustration trying to figure out why I kept losing my changes to MS Word's AutoText and normal.dot template everytime I closed Word. Two long calls to Microsoft's tech support could not identify the problem. Next stop, my local smart computer guy, who sniffed a software conflict and through process of elimination named the culprit: Adobe Acrobat Pro 7.0.
1-0 out of 5 stars Massive compatibility issues - Beware!
That's right if you have fillable forms created in a previous version and expect to change them, your out of luck.I thought compatibility was the cornerstone of Acrobat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid: "Worse than Malware"
Don't take my word for it that's a quote from the title of a recent post excoriating this irritating and increasingly bloated product on Slashdot. 1-0 out of 5 stars Bummer
If you use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) don't buy it!Links to your previous .pdf simply don't work.Adobe knows about it, but have no viable work around.Stick with prevous versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO-BRAINER, GET IT.
Simple. It loads like a blaze. Sure all the new frills and features like easy annotations are neat, but the speed of 7.0 alone makes it worth every dime. Especially if your current Acrobat is the half-baked clunky 6.0.x that burst through the gates before it had legs. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Whether you're looking to upgrade your current software or your existingskill set, the latest edition of Adobe FrameMaker is chock-full of usefulfunctionality that packs a punch. Those new to FrameMaker will find theinterface a bit underwhelming: unlike many other packages (from Adobe andotherwise), this software does not present dozens of buttons in the initialworkspace. Rather, a very modest few sit beneath the menu bar, and they aren'tterribly inviting. This means that users might overlook some features or growannoyed by having to hunt for a certain treatment that ensues.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for long documents
FM is a life saver for long documents. I've seen more corrupted Word documents than I care to remember. FM is fast, stable, and versatile. Its weaknesses are typography and colour management.2-0 out of 5 stars The little things DO count
This is a review of the Windows version.5-0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line--It Just Works!!!
I've been using FrameMaker for about 6 years, and each release just gets better and more reliable. I've been using version 7 for about a year now, and it has never crashed once, nor has any document become corrupted or unusable. That may sound like faint praise, but after years of using Microsoft Word and having large documents suddenly forget where chapters begin or having numbered lists re-number themselves nonsensically, I SO appreciate FrameMaker's stability. I've made manuals of over 400 pages with FrameMaker with never a problem that wasn't of my own making. This software is just really SOLID and RELIABLE and great for doing large documents. I'd never go back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For Book Publishing!
This is a fantastic product for book publishing. As a relative novice to book typesetting and interior design, I bought Framemaker 6.0 as my only chance to produce a book worthy of any major publishing house. A sincere thank you to Adobe's team of software specialists in designing a product, which truly worked for all our stringent page layout and publishing requirements! The manual is rather daunting at first, but I got my bearings by just reading through all of it from cover to cover before actually using the program itself. It could be somewhat more geared to the beginner user with clearer examples and an explanation of the publishing terminology, however, once you have mastered the rudiments, it is in general a user-friendly program. It took me about one month of concentrated effort to get into the program basics by focusing solely on our specific publishing needs. It more than proved its worth at our publishing house. We were able to import and convert chapters from MS Word to Framemaker 6.0 format, construct master pages with page numbering and running heads, align the text and lines on each page within each chapter, then build our own "Book Window" with all the chapters in sequence. Once in this "Book Window", you can adjust all the page numbering throughout the book, do bookwide editing, including search/replace etc. Unlike Pagemaker, this program is geared to larger tomes. Our book has 23 chapters and is 255 pages long and we had no difficulty. What was truly marvelous was the seamless interface between Framemaker 6.0 and Illustrator 9.0. To make our book special, we were able to design our own decoration for the chapter initials at the beginning of each chapter, the dividers within the book pages and the decoration in the running heads, all in Illustrator 9.0 and then import these right into the Framemaker 6.0 book pages. It was marvelous to be able to do so and then easily adjust the "sizing, runaround and gap" about the image to fit it onto the page. And even more, we were able to import other grayscale images, e.g. onto the chapter page and at the end of the book for advertising one of our already published books! By the way, we were not able to import objects drawn with shadows in Illustrator and transfered into Framemaker, but in our case it did not matter all that much. Also we found the conversion of the entire book in "Book Window" to Adobe's PDF for final printing very easy too. Overall, this program truly allowed us to make a book come to life! If you'd like to see our finished results and what can be done with Adobe's programs (both Illustrator 9.0 and Framemaker 6.0 were used for all the artwork/design and no clipart!), our book is entitled, "Accused By Facet-Eyes, A Classic Science-Fiction Novel" (by C.B. Don). In conclusion, I am very happy with Framemaker 6.0 and I would highly recommend it for any book publishing projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars High-End Publishing Tool
Adobe FrameMaker 6.0 is a high-end utility, which combines the functions of an advanced word processor, layout program, mathematical editor and pre-processing software for commercial printing.4-0 out of 5 stars Framemaker, excellent but....
Framemaker is an excellent product that offers all sorts of advanced features. For example, it is simple to produce and printout a double-sided document with a universally applied page format. However, the instruction manual is the worse example of documentation that I have ever experienced. After completing production of a book (several files amalgamated into one group that may be worked on as an entity)it is reasonable to assume the next step will be to generate a list of contents. You will have to work it out for yourself as the section dealing with this topic is gobbly- gook, disjointed, full of unexplained terminology and frankly not understandable. Take my advice, if you are not good at working things out for yourself, the instruction manual is a very good reason why you should choose another product ... Read more

Editorial Review

Adobe Acrobat lets you share information electronically in a quick and effective way. It converts any document--including entire Web sites--into an Adobe PDF file, keeping the original appearance preserved, then allows you to distribute it for viewing and printing on any system. In addition, powerful markup tools make electronic review and collaboration a snap. Do late-stage text and image editing on PDF files or reuse text, graphics, and table data from PDF files. "Overall, Acrobat 4.0 merits a standing ovation." --Luis Camus, Read more
