1-0 out of 5 stars Symantec Strikes Again
I have to qualify this review by saying that I do not own PM 8.0, so I cannot fairly give a rating, despite overwhelmingly negative reviews. I can only relate personal experience with Norton/Symantec products. I do own and have used PM 6.0 since '01 when it was still Powerquest instead of Norton/Symantec and it has worked very well, though the GUI is a bit quirky. I have run it with 2 drives, one with 98SE and XP Pro, with PM loaded on 98SE partition and it did everything I needed on both drives. Trouble is, version 5.0 is, AFAIK, not compatible with XP and since M$ no longer supports 98SE, we have a problem, Houston. Currently I amusing a mobile drive bay to switch drives as needed. If I get a drive partitioning software product compatible with XP, it most assuredly WILL NOT BE ANYTHING PRODUCED BY NORTON/SYMANTEC, based on these reviews and personal experience with Norton/Symantec products. I first bought a computer in '98 and used Norton Antivirus 5.0. At that time, Norton was probably the best antivirus product out there. It worked flawlessly and I used and recommended it for years. NO MORE. I purchased a copy of Symantec System Works 2005 right after it was released. Long story short, I no longer use Norton products because I got tired of the system crashes and stability issues caused by the unstable bloatware and system resource hog that it has become, and am currently using a competing product that is very highly rated but is not common on the shelves of the big box stores. There is one lone Symantec product I still use---Windoctor, which is not installed on my 'puter but ran from the CD as needed.Adios, anything else produced by Norton/Symantec. It ain't worth the headaches when there are much better products available for less coin.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inferior Technical Support - do not waste your time
I purchased Partition Magic 8.0 based on my previous experience with Symantec virus protection and firewall products.
2-0 out of 5 stars bloated, buggy, and missing valuable features
I am an experienced computer user, and I bought this primarily on my previous experince with Symantec products, which had been good.My experience with this product was unfortunately, very poor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great program - IF you're into the Blue Screen of Death!
Installed this on my laptop and it worked great until I had to use the Recovery Disc to restore a backup from DVD.Ghost recorded the DVD using multiple sessions and the Recovery Disc could only read the 1st session; pretty lowsy glitch.Fortunately I had a spare PC to re-record the DVD using single session - albeit manually.Other problem I had with this is that on my main computer in Windows XP SP2, it would always give a BSOD crash every time I tried to use it.The low-level driver wasn't cooperating - even after I removed everything else I could think of.Bottom line: this is NOT worth the money. The features are great and it has potential - but only when it works.I'm going to try something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars I might as well flushed my $$$
Ghost 9 was supposed to be an improvement? When you try to clone your boot drive it will copy everything but it will re-assign your system folder to the drive letter that windows has assigned to it. Making the new drive useless, of course. Their website is NO help and their support people can't even read the manual they were given.
1-0 out of 5 stars Could not even get to install the product
I got Ghost 9.0 included with Norton Internet Security 2005. I'm usually a very big fan of Norton products, however this time, I got quite a few headaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good software and good service
I've had several versions of Partition Commander, and have twice had to email for help, and my experiences differ from several expressed on this site.I have not used the multiple OS BOOT tools, and I have not used Recovery Commander, so you need to look elsewhere for reports on those.
1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T USE THIS!!!
Installed it on my Windows XP machine. It had a NTFS partition as a linked volume. HAD, it's gone now because the bootsector is corrupt. Sofar for the data... :-( I'd rather have a virus...

1-0 out of 5 stars This program can ruin your computer
I bought a copy of Partition Commander 9, and installed it on my hard drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars V-Com
Although I have not used System Commander 8.0, I did feel the need to comment about V-Com and there Tech Support.
3-0 out of 5 stars DOS Skills Were Essential
Interesting comments here about Sys Cmdr.. Perhaps my comments won't be accepted cuz they relate to an earlier version (5) but I think I can offer some insight. But first, let's remember that this is Amazon.com, and Amazon should not be tarnished cuz of some software company that can't get their act together. Amazon is okie-dokie with me. No gripe whatever.... I came here looking for info about this newer ver 8. I'm currently a ver. 5 user of Sys Cmdr. I will agree with others who state that V-Comm is bad on customer service. They are horrible. One fellow said "non-existent" I'll agree on that. However, I wonder about the bug reports. I would think vers. 8 to be less buggy than vers. 5. What many might think to be bugs is the way you go about things. Sys Cmdr is an animal one must "get acquainted with". If I hadn't learned my DOS, I would say I would've just thrown in the towel. I know, they don't publicize that, and this is not the best marketing, but being able to get down dirty in the DOS mud really helps. I've never tried to use Sys Cmdr installed to ANY version of Windows, only DOS 6.22. The only nasty bug I can complain of is when you have a partition with lots of data inside, Sys Cmdr will report "you're out of memory- cannot complete blah blah operation..." But that is not the end of the world. There is a way around this, if you think for a minute. But as for copying partitions- let's say, your startup, day-to-day partition, to a backup hard drive, ( 2nd hard drive), which is a mighty good idea before installing a new program, who's behavior is not known, Sys Cmdr will do the job. And if that new prog bombs out, you can just delete the screwed up partition on the boot drive and then COPY BACK the backup to the boot drive. This sounds like Windows Roll Back procedure, but it's better, much better. If you want a separate partition to run your favorite game, you can use Sys Cmdr to boot to just this partition, or boot to your Internet partition. I don't see a problem with the product once you know how this animal lives and breathes. I did bump the RESET button twice, rapidly (by mistake) one day, and soon discovered all my partitions were gone. How much of this do we blame to Sys Cmdr, and how much to the motherboard? Who knows. I've seen strange things happen. So I guess my big gripe is, V-Comm treats customers with little or no respect, and they don't have common sense in laying out the product or the instructions, but for those with that junk yard dog attitude, that just refuse to give up until their leg is eaten away, Sys Cmdr can be used to great advantage. When I migrated to Win 98se from the Macintosh 7 years ago, I would never have made it without Sys Cmdr version 5. It's a program that requires patience. One gentleman here said "read the book". He's right about that, even tho it's convoluted. The info is in there. You just gotta let it soak in. Once you see how it goes together, you'll learn to love Sys Cmdr, and at the same time, despise the stooges that produce it. The advantage of Sys Cmdr 8 is it allows use with Xp. One comment here gave the product the devil related to DOS. This man must be doing something wrong, because DOS is the simplest way to get Sys Cmdr running, the easiest of all.Sorry if this is too long. Delete if unacceptable. Hope this helps someone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great for me.
I use this program religiously on an iMac G5 with 10.4 and a Dual G4 tower running OS 9.I highly recommend this product!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy...should be withdrawn from the market!
This product doesn't work with OS X 10.4 (Tiger), and Norton states at their website that they won't be updating it.Unfortunately, the only indication that the thing doesn't work with Tiger is in the fine print on the box stating that it requires OS X 10.1 to 10.3.Since people often don't check the system requirements unless they're concerned with backward compatibility (not current compatibility), many Tiger users, like me, will probably buy this without realizing it won't work.I found out the hard way when I installed it and experienced a ton of problems.I didn't realize there was a compatibility issue until I went to the Symantec support website, where the compatibility and upgrade issues are prominently displayed.Too bad they couldn't mention those on the box.Now I'm stuck with a $140 white elephant since the store won't accept returns of opened software.

Dividing a hard drive into several partitions lets you efficiently organize operating systems, programs, and data. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. And, better yet, it even works
This product does what is otherwise impossible: shrinks a partition without disturbing the data therein. Also it works very fast! It takes just a minute or two to shrink or expand a partition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Treat with caution
After joining several partitions into one I was left with not being able to uninstall many of the programs on the hard drive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not entirely stable... and reliable?
PM 5 isn't something to run away from, but it's most certainly not a bang for your buck. If partitioning a HD makes you nauseous, you better download the trial version to see how it works. If partitioning is something you start your day with, PM's the first thing you should think about. It partitions on the fly, no doubt to that, but it also uses terms and concepts that may be a little unfamiliar to untrained eye/ear. Not everyone will feel comfortable using it... If you know what you're doing, take it... if not, don't try this at home. :) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very, VERY S-L-O-W
This is by far the slowest partitioning program you could buy.I only have a 2 gigabyte hard drive and I divided it up into two parts and that took almost 2 hours.Anything that you tell it to do, it takes an extraordinary amount of time.I finally got tired of it and bought Partition Magic that takes only 30 minutes to do the same thing Partition Commander did.My Recommendation is to leave this program on the shelve and get Partition Magic that does the job in a reasonable amount of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from V-Communications
I teach computer information systems for a living and I tell my students you can not partition a drive with data on it. I am also highly skeptical about any product that makes the claim that you can. V-Communications has changed all that with Partition Commander.5-0 out of 5 stars Mutli-System worries are finally over!

3-0 out of 5 stars good Software for most Computers ...
I worked with the Fix It Utilities 5.0 on my old Computer and now with my new Laptop. Fix It Utilities can find much more than Norton or Advanced System Optimizer and it keeps your registry clean. I know that my friend is also very contented. But one other friend of mine had that case where it was like in L. Young description. It happens in his case when you run FixUp "Diagnose and fix system problems" and it suddenly stops in the middle of the procedure the whole program without a message or anything. I would have given the Software 5 stars otherwise ...

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Dangerous Product (more like 0 star rating)
Exactly, don't even touch this rubbish, I simply tried to resize a partition and it totally stuffed up my Win XP Pro system. I am 3 days in now and trying to recover/rebuild my boot files and it has been next to impossible, I have now resorted to using ERD Commander (fantastic product) to simply recover my files and it will be easier now to reinstall everything. It totally changes something, I think makes major changes to boot and registry files and if your system has a user password, you'll have a hard time trying to recover anything. Microsoft are a bunch of unhelpful idiots with their support or tech notes, as if there are speaking nerd language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Partition Commander 8.0 is good product
I have this product and use it very frequently to partition DOS, NTFS and Linux partitions. It works even when the partition table is messed up according the highly touted Partition Magic and it showing no partitions so it is useless. I could make primary and extended partitions with this product without any problems on the same disk. Yes it has shortcommings but not what these ignoramus maximus people with one star talking about (you can not delet a linux partition without label so you have to reformat it and give it a label). I build and repair PC's and my advice to these ignorant people first learn how to use it on PC where you can not make demage or use a professional guy who knows what to do but anyway learn how to make a boot floppy (DOS,NTFS or Linux which ever is your taste).

1-0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk
So your programs are starting to fill up your C drive and you'd like to expand the size of that partition to keep your PC working smoothly? Then turn and run away from this program like your life depended upon it. Installing the program onto my XP Media Center (with Service Pack 2) was easy. It seemed easy to ask it to resize a partition. I only knew that this was the beginning of a nightmare when after a couple minutes, the program ceased trying to resize the partition and asked me if I'd experienced a power outage or anything during the last minute. I hadn't. But metaphorical darkness came soon thereafter, as my E drive completely vanished (not damaged, just no longer seen), my boot system became completely missing (though I could manually boot up well enough to see what damage had been done), my recovery system no longer able to be located, and other vital Windows elements just not able to be found anymore- even though my documents and my programs were still safely there on the drives (at least on the drives I could still see).In short, a simple task resulted in a problem which now will likely cost me hundreds, and may even force me to wipe down my whole computer. If I had done something wrong, I wouldn't be here giving the program 1 star (more like zero stars). But instead I am here to warn you that if it doesn't do what it tries to do, the damage that it causes will cause you pain. I need to stress that I am talking about damage that it causes when it makes a mistake itself, not a mistake that you may make. It evidently isn't advanced enough a program.
